"Supply Shortages"

Yeah, just creating fake hysteria for some free marketing. Oldest trick in the book.
Apple really doesn't need this type of marketing. I think there are legitimate supply problems. It kind of hurts having your sole supplier of OLED being Samsung. I am sure Samsung gives themselves preferential treatment for supply.

For me, I would question the value of facial recognition and what additional value it provides (more convenient maybe? I guess I have to experience it).

What would be nice is if Apple had someway to make flipping portrait/landscape easier (less friction) based on the orientation of the user's head. This would add value to me (I can't speak for others).

.

I really hope there is still TouchID. I can't help feeling that if Apple do face recognition then it will be the first time they've implemented a feature "to keep up with the Jones's". In my view, it has no advantage over TouchID.

face unlock has 1 significant benefit. Winter :p

when it's -20c out and you don't want to remove your gloves, but you might want to unlock your phone to use with voice recognition or read something.

This and the fact the 8 is expected to be pricey are two of the reasons I simply bought a nice 7 on sale a few weeks ago.

Good luck with that recognising my ugly mug with a frost-bitten nose and iced-up beard!

Just make sure you carry a picture of yourself :p

However, yes when the temps get that low, I generally prefer just to keep my hands in my pants for warmth and ignore my phone :p

I was just giving a counter that it's got a few benefits

Been using iOS 11 since beta 1, and there's nothing the new iPhone can bring that'll make me really want one, besides looks.

Devils advocate here, what if you don't want it to turn on when you look at it? Isn't "always looking" going to be a battery waste?

This just doesn't seem to make any sense. Touch ID can't be replaced by facial recognition, think of when you pay with Apple Pay, hold the phone to the card reader and then authenticate with TouchID. How would you do that with FaceID (can I trade mark that quickly?)? Hold the phone at an angle where it can see your face? Hold to reader, then hold up to authenticate, then back to the reader?
Probably unlock THEN hold to reader. Don't see why that wouldn't work.

HA if its -20c you most likely have a full face toboggan on too lol. So SOL using your phone.

I suspect tied to raise to wake. But anyone thought about twins or triplets? Your twin can use your phone to buy stuff easy peasy.

People saying fake shortages are in for a surprise IMO. I really think if you miss the initial wave it will be 10+ weeks and probably January before you can walk into a store and get the 8. That is if you are lucky.

I will probably do the same with a 7plus, but not until after they announce the new phones ($100 cheaper plus whatever else they offer).

Again, online orders ship dates for the OLED model will slip to "Jan 2018" within a handful of minutes.
You thought Ear Pods have been tough to come buy? Brace yourselves.

Could not agree more.

As I have posted before on the forum in the past it's is worth repeating. The entire screen will be a touch ID sensor. I have seen it. It may also explain the more complex screen process. This would allow the capability to sense two or more finger prints to unlock.

Source? Where did you see it?

Any new tech from Apple is always gonna see delays because its never been done before by Apple in mass.

so, we'll be waiting a while..... is that really bad?

Production will improve.. it always does,,, (just not in the bounds of when users would like it to.)

What is the release date ends up being October 12th instead of September 22nd....

On my side, I cannot fathom gifting Tim and company $1,000+, for a freaking iPhone -- any phone.
And, definitely, it is not like I could not afford it.

But it is just over the top for what amounts an add-on, portable device for my use case. (My iPhone is not my only computer device, like with others in this thread.)

I am entirely happy with my iPhone SE. It serves its purpose exceedingly well. And I bought it unlocked, cash and carry -- no freaking monthly payments that hide its true cost.

If i would want to spend this kind of money, I would certainly do it for an iPad Pro 10.5 (future second generation), and replace my iPad Mini 4 which complements my MacBook Pro for consumption purposes.

But that is just me. To each its own.

Sssoooo.... according to this story, Apple have ditched the Touch ID because it can make it work with 3D Touch the n an OLED screen... and yet Apple ALSO can't make 3D Touch work still without Touch ID on an OLED screen or the 3D face scanning camera supposedly there to replace Touch ID....

Hmm the words should of kept LCD and Touch ID spring to mind, bunch of amateur muppets if this is true...

Good luck with your $1000 plus Apple gen one product..

Hmm do I join in... hmmmm...

I'm really hoping the Price passes the 1000 so people don't empty the shelves and I get the chance to buy it in-store whenever I feel like without having to be in long waiting lines. :)

More and more i'm getting the impression that it might be a smart move to wait for a revision 2.

If there's manufacturing issues, do you really want to be splashing your cash on this thing? I mean there's usually an overhyped 'gate' with new-design iPhones anyway, but this is both a big departure from what's gone before and they're having trouble actually making it satisfactorily by the sound of things. You have to be really dedicated to want to be a test pilot here methinks...

Apple is the king of creating artificial demand to drive up product desire. Nintendo has learned well from them.

Literally everyone I know and everyone I ask says they want to buy the new premium model. Demand for this incredible new iPhone is going to lead to massive global supply shortages for at least 9 months.

I expect many of us will buy the 7s as well as wait for deliver of the new iPhone 8. I know I will to make sure I lock in delivery of at least one launch day model.
