face unlock has 1 significant benefit. Winter :p

when it's -20c out and you don't want to remove your gloves, but you might want to unlock your phone to use with voice recognition or read something.
I wonder how well it works in the snowy parts of the country where u have to bundle up from top to bottom to go outside. Probably not a pleasant experience to expose my face in minus 20F just to unlock the phone. I hope the icicle hanging down from my nose and eyelid don't throw off the unlock algorithm.

As I have posted before on the forum in the past it's is worth repeating. The entire screen will be a touch ID sensor. I have seen it. It may also explain the more complex screen process. This would allow the capability to sense two or more finger prints to unlock.
You have seen it?
You probably meant that demo of of a prototype from that Chinese company. Where they also clearly stated that it wasn't working that it was just a demo.

This could also be a ploy by Apple to buy enough time for people to understand the value of the phone before putting it for mass production. That way they can correlate their quarterly earnings to the new iPhone at a later date.

While some brace for hurricaines, others brace for the iPhone 8 release debacle. For me, iPhones aren't as groundbreaking as they used to be so waiting and avoiding the hassel is preferred. Plus, you can see if there's any major issues BEFORE forking over serious coin. Smartphones are old news... Apple has got to EARN my annual upgrades from now on.

Or to stop caring. Many consumers want instant gratification so when they go online and see a months long wait they just give up. Short supply does not increase sales. You can't sell what you don't have to sell.

I'm talking about initial sales, as in when pre-ordering opens. If customers know they may not get one if they don't hustle at midnight, there will be more orders. People will want to order it faster and even if they get a ship date in November, not all people will cancel them. Regardless, Apple fans WANT this new iPhone. It's gonna sell like gangbusters.

Im like 80% sure Apple has one firm date September 22nd for all phones - however supply will be even more constrained then years past. It just wouldn't seem like Apple to debut all three iPhones and say iPhone 8/8 Plus launches Sept 22, iPhone Edition in October. That means within minutes of online pre-orders expect shipping dates will slip into October. So most people won't have an OLED iPhone in hand until October/November.

Kind of like Apple announcing the refresh of the Mac Pro back in April that won't be out until sometime in 2018 (maybe, hopefully).

Apple needs the quarterly sales. The iPhone 8 is going to be scarce and expensive. Apple is hoping enough people say "screw it" when the earliest preorder ship dates for the 8 start in mid-October & slip into early 2018 before the end of the first day and just go for the iPhone 7S instead.

Apple really doesn't need this type of marketing. I think there are legitimate supply problems. It kind of hurts having your sole supplier of OLED being Samsung. I am sure Samsung gives themselves preferential treatment for supply.

Of course Samsung does, they shipped their Note 8 out a week in advance so they are having no problems supplying their own OLEDs for their own devices but what company wouldn't put their own company first......So why even question this????

Its the exact Reason why Apple should get into manufacturing their own devices and all the raw materials it takes to do so..they have enough funding to do it.

That makes zero sense. People who preorder want a phone a launch or pretty damn close to it. But just because you order at 3:03am doesn't guarantee you that. If stock is low from the start ordering at that time could put your 4,5,6 weeks away. To some that would be discouraging and they'd just cancel the order because, as you say, they were buying from impulse and not need. Impulse to buy also means inclination to cancel if the instant gratification is non-existent.

I agree this phone will sell like gangbusters but because its going to be a great phone, not because Apple is pushing out hype about "production problems limiting initial production." The latter does not work as a sales technique and not taught in B-school. It's a pure amateur-hour tactic. Works one with a gimmick product. But it's not a go-to play, esp when it's a $1K product.

I'm really hoping the Price passes the 1000 so people don't empty the shelves and I get the chance to buy it in-store whenever I feel like without having to be in long waiting lines. :)
Here in the states. Even if it's over $100 as long as person is eligible for an upgrade and their bill hasn't been all out whack all they have to do is pay the tax and then pay $30-50 extra on their phone bill. So no I don't think the price is going to back people off

how have you seen it?

so far the only demonstration of this technology working was by Qualcomm this year at a trade show, and they already said it's not ready for production yet. Samsung had been rumoured to provide the same technology in the S8, but due to failure of the technology, they had to change to the back fingerprint sensor.

So at this point, there's no manufacturer who is capable of under-screen fingerprint sensors. Could Apple be the first? Possibly, but so far every single rumour regarding this technoloy has stated that it is not coming this generation.

If it turns out correct I'll reveal the source. If it doesn't then I can say now what I have not seen is the timeline and what you have written may be more accurate timeline wise so I'll give you that now, a maybe next-gen but that info is not part of my source as much I would like to have it. I've had to make a reasonable estimate that it's the iPhone8 based on other factors. I've been a generation out before with predictions. I have seen the tech at least.

I have also taken a view based on this source and written it in the past that the rumours of failure to achieve is dis-info apple style and are a deflection.

No haven't seen that video, do you have a link?

Where have I heard this before? Oh, wait, every launch since the beginning of iPhone. That's where.

Except the firs one right?

Well at least we won't have to worry about getting the display from "the better supplier", since there is only one.
Well, Sammy's own smartphone panels could conceivably be better than Samsung's Vietnam produced displays destined for Apple's new OLED iPhone. I have a hunch somebody out there will sooner or later do a detailed comparison, if for no other reason than bragging rights.

Nope that won't happen...that title will absolutely remain with the Note 8..thanks

Yes. There will be pain.

I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung makes sure they still have the superior panels in their own products. Apple tries to leverage its buying power, but Samsung still has to think about its own interests and Sammy is often the only viable game in town for Apple.

Somehow merely from reading about how the touch digitizer and display is not a single unit but requires layers glued, it does appear that the Samsung construction is superior. It remains to be seen. It's like how the laminated display in the current LCD in the iPhone was an improvement over the original display.

If it's really delayed, some people could consider the Note 8, Google Pixel line, or another device.
Or the 7s/7s plus. People always look at specs and consider that people choose their smartphone based upon that specs, but those people are not ios users, they really can' t see that most apple user make the buying decision on the fact that they want too keep using ios , they don' t get other brands because of android operating system.
People that don' t use ios , don' t realize this at all.
Most people don' t know or care about oled, megapixels, octacore, 6gb of memory, capacity of battery, that the second lens has ois, etc. They want a better iphone than they have right now, because their contract is expiring with their carrier, etc.

I dont know. I'm one of those morons who live in Canada and don't actually own a winter jacket.

Apple's upcoming OLED "iPhone 8" with an edge-to-edge display and facial recognition faced multiple production issues early in the manufacturing process, which is likely to result in "extended supply shortfalls and shipping delays," reports The Wall Street Journal.

The production problems have led to a setback of "about a month" in Apple's manufacturing timetable, but Apple supplier Foxconn is ramping up development and working to hire new employees.

Today's report is nothing we haven't heard before. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said for months that he expects the iPhone 8 will be hard to come by until early 2018, and we've heard several rumors pointing towards problems with the display lamination process and other high-tech components like the 3D sensor embedded at the front of the device. The Wall Street Journal points to OLED assembly as a major reason for the delays.Apple also wanted to add Touch ID to the display of the new device, but it "proved difficult," leading Apple to abandon the fingerprint sensor and lose valuable time as deadlines loomed.

While we hear rumors of supply shortages each and every year, it's worth noting that this year's rumors are both more concrete and more dire. If Kuo's predictions are correct, many of us hoping to get our hands on a new device could be waiting for weeks or months as Apple works to ramp up production.

Extended shortages may also impact Apple's holiday sales period, which is often the company's strongest, but because there's also a new iPhone 7s and 7s Plus on the horizon, it's difficult to determine the effect extended iPhone 8 shortages might have on the company's Q4 bottom line.

Customers hoping to get an iPhone 8 as soon as possible will want to pre-order the device right when it goes on sale. It's not entirely clear yet if the iPhone 8 will be available shortly after being introduced on September 12 or if the supply issues will lead Apple to delay shipments beyond September.

[doublepost=1504877969][/doublepost]I would not touch a samsung or lg or sony with a 10 foot pole... so, apple it is or on... it's the only phone on the market. yeah. even for you smart people who carry something else. and no... no. there is no respect for copy cats or for alternative solutions. if it looks like an iphone and acts like one, well, it's just not one.

As much as I want the iPhone 8, I'm not sure it'll be worth the trouble of trying to get one when the iPhone 7S (8?) Plus should be easy (and cheaper) to get my hands on. What are my chances with the 8 (Edition/X?) if I'm online the second preorders go live? I don't really want to wait until December or January for a new phone.

"I would like an iPhone 8, please. I am a Next customer."
"Sorry, we don't expect those in stock for two more months. We do have the new iPhone 7S Plus' in stock now."
"Okay. I'll take one of those in black. The 256GB model."
"Done. Here you go. Your phones are now swapped. See you again next year for the iPhone 9."

I just wish people wouldn't unnecessarily use all bold caps. But nothing is perfect under the sun and when it is you'll pay dearly for it. Compare a Chevy Malibu with a BMW 330i with a Rolls Royce Ghost. If you can't afford Apple's best phone now you surely wouldn't be able to afford it if it was "perfect." There are always design compromises made unless there is an unlimited budget and the laws of physics can be suspended.
There’s no way i would buy an imperfect Apple device at an extreme price.
