Went with the iPhone 8 plus because of this reason. I rather have a wider screen then a taller skinner one.
Same, can't add any more to this comment really.

You would need to subtract a bit of space from the top of the 8+ as well because the status bar isn't "usable space" either ...
When you turn an iPhone sideways to view in widescreen format the status bar disappears totally, so it doesn't actually lose any screen real estate. Therefore the 8+ is a better option for widescreen real estate than the X.

As I view photographs and websites in widescreen orientation, I'm glad I went with the 8+ over the X.

There's no argument that the Plus has the larger usable screen. However it also comes with chunky bezels that render the overall form factor unusable for me. Coupled with the fact that the screen quality is not insignificantly inferior, I don't think it's fair to say the Plus is "king", more like there's a contender to the throne.

My biggest concern, coming from a 7, is that the X doesn't feel like a 4S to 5 upgrade, as in essentially the same just a bit taller. I never really liked the 5 for that reason, and when the 6 came out I thought 'yes, this is how it should have been'. Now, there is a bit more width to the X but I'm going to have to see it in person, and keep my receipt just in case.

Next year Apple releases two versions of the X, the current 5.8 inch and a taller 6.+ version. This years new X was hurried because they couldn’t get certain things to work they envisioned (touch ID). This was the 10th anniversary so they “had” to shell something out “different” whether you think it’s good or bad.

The biggest practical display in Apple's iPhone lineup this year is the iPhone 8+.

Current Plus users will realize this quick once they start using the X model.

The display tech is lower in the Plus but the usability is certainly higher and more practical.

According to Technarchy's link in another thread, OP's comparison picture is not accurate because the width of both iPhone X and iPhone 8 screens are the same.

https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/iphone-x/

Yet the body of iPhone X is wider than iPhone 8, so that means the bezel on both sides of iPhone X is actually bigger. So much for the bezel-less concept
The iPhone X screen is 2.4563 inches across and the iPhone 8 screen is 2.3 inches across.

Please show me the link to that info, because I was surprised myself when I read Technarchy's link.
From Apples own site, just divide the screen widths (given in pixels) by their respective PPI's.

Using this same logic, the iPhone 8+ screen is therefore 2.6932 inches wide.

Fair enough, but this is only your personal use case. As smartphones are used most of the times in portrait orientation, the status bar still needs to be considered when comparing the usable screen real estate in general.

True, and you need to therefore take into account the two regions, top and bottom of the iPhone X that are unusable screen space.

This should help you understand what you are getting with the X.

I would imagine next year the iPhone X will come into size variants as you said. Tween or Face ID will be reintroduced again and likely faster, similarly to how touch ID was continually improving as well.

Your deduction does make sense. I am wondering why that link I posted (from Apple) says both X and 8 screens are the same width?

i have been wondering about that as well. but the X definitely has a wider screen than the 7. if it was the same width it would be 2436x960 and not 2436x1125.

they might have added a bit of screen for the home "button" line.

You're getting a little confused here. The X has more pixels across its width, but those pixels are crammed in tighter, as they are smaller. It has a higher pixel count of 458 per inch.
