Unit sales are down, so they are upping the price of the phones to compensate for the loss. Unless it's a groundbreaking phone like the leap from 3GS > 4 I will probably give pass on this. Will we see the return of carrier subsidies? Guess only time will tell.

We don't know if that will be for the regular version, the Plus model or maybe a 3rd higher end option.
I really doubt they will jump from $650 for the base model to $1000.
There's more to the story that we're not sure about yet.

I don't think the upgrade from the 3GS to the iPhone was was really groundbreaking at all.
It looked sleeker but there wasn't such a huge upgrade imo.

I think Applejuiced's theory is closer to reality. At $1k I am taking a pass on getting a new iPhone and so will loads of other people. Apple would take a solid hit in the butt on that price point and lose a heck of a lot sales. I just don't see it happening. That price point's too high unless it's a super premium model.

I don't understand why anyone thinks the 8 will be the base model. Clearly, a 7S and 7S Plus is likely coming, and the 7S will be the base model new phone. The 8/ Edition will obviously be a high end model as evidenced in part by the starting capacity and other rumors. $999 sounds about right, and to answer the OP, yes I will get it at that price, if I wind up returning my 7 Plus.

I would buy it if I lived in the US. But 999 USD is 914,46 EUR. Including the 21% tax will make it 1.106 EUR in The Netherlands. That is way too much...

I will keep my iPhone 6 or buy the 7(S) if this price is real.

I assume they will phase the iPhone to the more expensive ones like the iPad where now only the more expensive "Pro" versions get real upgrades.

Considering the rumors point to only a smaller version of the 'premium' iPhone, regardless of the price, I won't likely be buying it. I want at least a minimum of 5.5" of usable display, preferably closer to 6". And yes, I'm aware that the total display is supposedly 5.8 but only 5.1-5.2 is usable with the remainder dedicated to some touch bar type interface. Do the same thing in the larger Plus form factor and I'd likely bite but if there is only a smaller premium version, I'll pass.

Hm, good point. Might be something I'd have to consider as well. I would assume you could still watch videos that fill the entire screen though?

If it's as incremental of an upgrade as from 6S to the 7, I'll skip it like I did the 7.

It would be nice if they could offer a 64gb version and knock off a hundred bucks. That would put it at 899, which is only 50 more than the S8+. IMO 64gb is the sweet spot for a phone these days.

To me, 64 GB was the perfect median. And now Apple has it where it's a significant jump from 32 to 128 to 256. Although I currently have a 32 GB and I don't require to use all of that space, but 64 GB was nice to have just in case you needed additional space, but not having too much where you wouldn't use it.

Believe it or not, I could even survive on 16 GB. But I do appreciate having 32 GB being how photos/videos and software updates consume memory now.

For that kind of money I hope it turns out to be the Swiss Army knife of the cell phones.

Crazy isn't it? We're walking around with phones that cost upwards of a thousand dollars in our pockets. If we drop it we might be screwed, if we loose it, or it gets stolen we might be screwed. A phone that costs more than most tablets, windows laptops and desktops. Here's a mind boggle for you. If you drive a car, or truck that's over 15 years old and you own a new flagship smartphone, how does it compute, or rationalize to you that your phone holds more monetary value than your vehicle?

I will buy it anyway,I am totally bored from this 6 series design, and i really need change :).Rumored touch id embedded in the edge to edge OLED display and flushed dual back camera is the most i am excited about this year :D

Edit :- flushed dual camera like this one
