iPhone 7 is a true example of a company that was bequeathed an amazing device and direction only to have the company years later drag their heels and release nothing of true value or true innovation. Heck, iPhone 7 is just a third version of iPhone 6 with a new color palette!

Yep all the cables are going... except for the cable that's plugged in the wall that connects to a power mat so the device can charge.
[doublepost=1486881988][/doublepost]Perhaps is feels like this is f---ing hilarious! Not to be insensitive, but please bring back Steve Jobs, his job is not yet done, and his legacy is being destroy. (RIP.) Apple is replacing a simple thin single charging cable with an oversized gimmicky charging disc that still needs to be plugged into the wall!!!!!????? This isn't courage. This is sales and marketing killing the design and engineering departments at Apple. Completely inelegant way forward. NO PURCHASE PERSONALLY, NO PURCHASES FROM MY COMPANY. #SWITCHTIME

Side note, neither device has ever been powered on. Oh, now I understand why.

So just curious, what screams true value and innovation for a phone to you? I think Apple has done a great job of moving the industry forward. Did I have to have a 7 plus vs my 6 plus. No, but I appreciate the refinement. I believe a lot of people are just getting sad that the don't change the look of the iPhone for the heck of it. I'm ok with that. It only has the potential to introduce new problems unless there is a great reason for it. The phone book is over ladies and gentlemen. It's all about refinements now.

I got sad when Apple decided to undo and go backwards by introducing visible external antenna lines, protruding cameras and not keeping 4 inch device design inline with the newest design release (minus the flaws mentioned). So a combination of rehashing old stuff and deteriorating design values did it. Not sure what refinements you speak of, these certainly are not it. Apple moved the industry forward from 2007-2011, and has stagnated since on multiple levels.

As the momentum cable is detachable, it would be great it sennheiser made a replacement lightning cable!!

It's more than that, I think the internal circuitry would have to change as well unless they come out with essentially a longer version of the Lightning-3.5mm adapter (with a male end, rather than the female end the Apple one has).

I guess it all comes down to preference like everything else then. They are not in a position to be able to make every single person happy all the time. If they did that and grabbed one person we would have the equivalent of the bubble car Homer Simpson designed.

Just to run down the list, visible antennae lines have been around since the iPhone 4. Necessary for any phone to actually work with a metal enclosure. I like the metal as it's durable and does not shatter like glass does. Protruding camera is fine with me as they are making the devices thinner every generation. Laws of physics still apply to photography. And a 4 inch flagship phone, well their numbers suggest otherwise that it's what people actually want. And honestly the regular size iPhone 6 and 7 are not epically bigger than of the 5 series.

Real refinements that I enjoy using with my 7 plus are the 3D Touch and Taptic (and static) phone button, waterproofing, dual cameras and portrait mode, stereo sound, and of course faster speeds (with Touch ID especially) and better battery. Again not completely life changing events coming from a 6 plus but I consider them very much welcomed refinements to my 6 plus which I liked a lot.

And Apple does catch a lot of grief and pressure on not adopting things soon enough. Though they don't typically add in things that are aren't great for the end user. It's all in accord to a cost/benefit analysis I'm sure.

What are you looking forward to the most as for innovation? For me it would be full waterproof down to say 50 feet or so for a reasonable amount of time. I'm in the camp that I don't see "wireless" (read conductive) charging worthwhile. That seems like a gimmick.

Cheers

No, visible antenna lines were essentially non existent on iPhone 4. iPhone 6 however made the introduction of thick awkward lines a design fail. The protruding camera is also a design fail and could be entirely avoided with design changes. The other features you speak of are either revenue raising or marketing tricks.

Antenna lines were very visible on the sides of the iPhone 4. Antenna lines on the iPhone 6 is all preference. Doesn't bother me nor the millions enough who still bought one. Again you can call the protruding camera lens a design fail but the majority of is would rather have a thinner phone. I'm guessing you'd rather have a thick iPhone so the camera lens doesn't stick out?

And the rest I mentioned are marketing tricks? lol Ok I guess there are no real world usages for waterproofing our phones or anything else. I thought there could be an interesting discussion to be had here but clearly you sound like you are disgruntled with anything that Apple does to its phone. Still using your iPhone 4 or did you finally switch to Android?

Antenna lines on 4 were effectively a continuous wrap around that has form and function. On 6 and 7 antenna lines cut in like a scar. Protruding camera is unnecessary, and to avoid it wouldn't make the phone thick. Total furphy to suggest otherwise. People either like clean design or they don't. I like clean design, and iPhone 6,6s,6sss(7) isn't clean. And both clean design can incorporate great functionality.

The antenna on the iPhone 4 had 3 or 4 antenna line breaks depending on the model. And they weren't symmetrical either. And remembering back to those good ol days it also dropped your phone's signal when used without a case. It was also much thicker which is why the camera didn't protrude. And yes, with photography, the lens and sensor need a certain distance from each other. Especially when utilizing a telephoto lens as the 7+'s do. This just isn't changing unless some futuristic technology comes along. Apple didn't put the camera bumps there for the fun of it. Trust me. Not when they are shaving extra millimeters off the phone here and there. It's for better optics.

I love a clean design as the next person. It needs to work correctly though. However our devices should not be getting thicker and heavier. I guess I just like the "ugly" iPhones that work. My jet black 7 plus is the best iPhone to date. Can't even really see the antenna lines you hate so much. ;)

It makes perfect sense. Adapter is "no longer necessary" because it hinders the money flow. $1199 for the phone, $20 for the adapter and $15 for the lightning to usb-c cable means extra $35 compared to that measly $1199 they'd get from the phone alone. Why bother including anything? I bet even the wall charger will cost extra with the new one.

Oh, and I forgot to include $150+ for the headphones so you can at least listen to some music on the device. Which sounds better to you, $1k or $1,5k? That is, if you're on the receiving end...

But wouldn't syncing your 256 GB iPhone 8 wirelessly take a loooong time?
Maybe I'm not up to date on this, but in the past I tried wirelessly syncing my 128 GBs and I gave up on it and ended up plugging the iPhone in.
Neat idea but was taking forever...
At least for the first time when loading all your data into the phone.

It certainly would. My comment about removing the Lightning port wasn't advocating for removing the Lightning port and going solo with Wifi so much as it was for replacing that ports with something that can be plugged into a USB-C port with the device. If USB-C is the only port for Apple going forward on the Mac then USB-C should be the port on the iPhone instead of a Lightning port or, if that port is too big, then the iPhone should include a cable in the box that can be connected to a USB-C port.

In my view given what Apple is currently doing if Apple sticks with Lightning then a Lightning to USB-C cable should be included in the box along with the standard Lightning to USB cable.
