Again, who said "tiny" is needed?

Literally anything physically smaller than an iPhone 8 would satisfy most of us looking for something to go to after our current SE's

The SE wasn’t a new hardware design, though. It reused the 5S. The SE 2 likely won’t be either: it’ll reuse the 8.

The point is... NO ONE is making "small" phones anymore. Including Apple.
No one? Sure about that?

But Apple still makes a phone smaller than everyone else.
Not even that is true. There a still offerings from Samsung, Sony & Co which are in the same size range as the iPhone 8, plus/minus one or two millimeters. Even if these are usually a year old, they are still sold and for the most part built.

So... will you never buy a new phone ever again?
"Never" is a strong word, but rest assured that it will be a long time before Apple – or any other phone manufacturer – would get my money for a product which does not fit my needs and which I don't want.

My four year old iPhone SE still runs strong: the battery is healthy and lasting, and the performance is more than sufficient for my uses. Desaster nonwithstanding, it will last me for two more years or longer.

Fine... you got me.

But we were talking about the old iPhone SE size... not the iPhone 8 size.

I'm unaware of Samsung phones in the 4"-class. But your Google-foo is obviously better than mine. ;)

This all goes back to the photo I posted earlier where I selected modern mainstream smartphones. The iPhone 8 is smaller than all of those I selected.

But none of those are anywhere close to the size of the SE (which was when I jumped into this thread)

"Never" is a strong word

Dang... y'all are so literal!

Like I said in an earlier comment... I really, really, really don't think we're gonna see a new phone from Apple that is the TRUE successor to the old iPhone SE/5

But hey... all we got is time, right? :p

Your previous statement…
But Apple still makes a phone smaller than everyone else.
…implies that the iPhone 8 not only is the "smallest" phone still in production, but that there even is no other phone in the same size range. Which is not true.

… a phone that can only be purchased as a satellite to another phone …
The new Palm has been available as stand-alone device since 2019. It even says so explicitly on the webpage I linked to: "Unlocked Palm is a standalone device that works as a normal phone with supported carriers."

Yep... I was wrong. My bad.

I'm gonna give you a "Like" on your previous comment because of your commitment to seeking the truth! :)

It's not technically true, but it's disingenuous of you to pretend otherwise.

The person @Michael Scrip responded to wanted something that isn't "unwieldily large compared to the original SE". They are unlikely to get that, not out of some malice on Apple's part, but because that form factor — 4 inches — has become an extremely narrow slice of the market.

That was the point. If you want to refute it, go ahead, but if you're gonna do that with a rugged phone, maybe waste someone else's time.

OK.

And yet it didn't launch as a standalone device. So now they're allowing it, because it was a commercial disaster.

This is a complete proof of Apple loosing its power to innovate and to come up with a BOLD design, this is all due to the fact, that bean-counter and excellent CFO Tim Cook took over as CEO.

Main complaints are “old ugly design” and “too big”.

If they would have come up with the original SE bezel-less, folks would be out camping in front of the Apple Stores, no Virus in the world would stop them ...

But this phone is in fact just project to sell the old parts off, that have been lying around on the shelves of the factories.

Even people from “low income countries” won’t fall for that trap and will buy something Korean or Chinese instead.

You failed, Mister Cook!

Steve would have never allowed this.

Look, there’s nothing wrong with the original SE form factor and the follow-up version need to stick with that physical size and OLED for earning its reputation as iPhone SE.
If Apple made an X style SE it wouldn't be a budget option. This new device is aimed more at the budget market than the small phone market which is a small minority.

Let's clarify something right, the price of original SE was never market to be a budget model and it is not meant to equip with inferior hardware. People are getting a bit confused due to the horrible iPhone X debut as overpriced product with an unpleasant screen design in 2017.

The original SE was released as a 5S replacement but with the performance of the 6S. Pricing was less than the 6S at $399. It was the budget option with current performance at launch.

To the iPhone X, yes it was expensive at release. $1k+ flagships are the new normal these days. My earlier post was referring to the fan render which seems to have been deleted of an SE style phone but with near bezel-less screen, Face ID and Dual Rear cameras. That phone would be great for the small minority of people who want a new small phone but it would probably be around 11 Pro Max prices due to development costs.

The rumoured new SE based on the iPhone 8 is mainly for the substantial budget market. These customers are generally in the position where they simply can't justify or afford the flagship models for various reasons. Using an existing design with new internals reduces costs and allows the product to be marketed at a lower price point but still offers an up to date experience with long support

Apple never claimed there's any iPhone as a budget model because it is not.

thats becoming a tired old argument, and the OS is becoming pretty expensive on that basis.
Me too. I'm tired of the old non sense "you can find better value for that money" referred to Android phones that can't run iOS.
iOS is too expensive for you ? Well, go elsewhere, there are alternatives 🤷🏻‍♂️

No idea, but many people still own 6/6S and some may need a new screen protector. Why wouldn’t a company want to sell to them?
Well, we are speaking about Apple Online Store here... I'm not expecting reference to very old iPhone like the 6...

Gross. What an insult to the iPhone SE legacy.

How is this even an insult?
The new 2020 iphone 4.7" is the perfect follow on from the 2016 iPhone SE. same price. same strategy (put the latest A chip and camera into the previous generation design). The naming is perfect.

I've been anxiously awaiting this rumored iPhone SE for quite some time. Planning to upgrade my iPhone 6 finally. I guess we'll see what it actually contains before I decide if I'll go for the 2020 SE or the iPhone 11.
Definitely go for the 11. Bigger screen means everything dude. I upgraded from 7 to XS MAX and the screen is just soooo much larger and better

I know some people will be upset that this new "SE" won't be as small as the original SE...

But look at the sizes everyone else is selling at this price-point... Apple still makes one of the smallest phones around:

where did you get this size comparison? Its actually quite useful

See the thing is, I don't want a bigger phone. That's why I was/am so excited for a possible SE update. My 6 is too big for my taste even.

The description on the danish Apple shop has not changed yet. -still says iPhone 7 and 8 only.
There is no longer any listing about 4.7” as SE. The iPhone 8 is just a year and half newer than the original SE and Apple need to update the 4” as iPhone SE 2 with 4.7” as iPhone 8S for greater sales.
