The trend is to change the connector every year or so to sell more dongles. All the lightning accessories you've invested in will need lightning to USB C dongles. More profit$.

iPhone is dying. With every new model, Apple is selling less and less of them now. Market share is falling too.

This is all due to Tim Cook abandoning the lower-end market. They don't have an iPhone 5C equivalent anymore.
Seriously dude? If you're going to try to start a hate war, at least put some effort into it; don't phone it in with "statistics" that are obviously made up and a level of cluelessness (ever heard of the iPhone SE?) that shows you're just not a worthy opponent.

Every year or so? By which you mean:
- 30 pin connector lasted from 2003 to 2012
- Lighting lasted from 2012 till at the very least 2017?

Try harder next time.

Bunch of whiners in this thread. I was an android fanboy for 10 years and went through about 9 android flagship phones in those 10 years because the only ones that were even reliable, believe it or not, were HTC's. I recently made the switch to an iPhone 7 plus after my personal fiasco with Samsung phones (Note 7 recall, and two S7 edges that each worked for about 2 weeks), and I couldn't be happier. The pixel, with its stock android UI is just as vanilla and boring as iOS so I decided if Im gonna get a boring phone, maybe this time I should get one that actually works. I couldn't be happier with my 7 plus and I can say with confidence that no matter what Apple does with this year's release, I will get one. At least I know iOS is reliable and Apple's hardware is still the best.

For those of you complaining about the cost: Have you seen what Android flagships run? Not much cheaper. These are all just rumors and until September we wont know anything for sure. Now having said all that, I really hope there are 3 different phones being released because after owning the S7 edge twice, I can say that I HATE curved screens. I really hope the flagship doesn't have one, but its sounding like it will. That will probably be what drives me to a 7S Plus, hopefully in red.

I think My next iPhone will be a Google Pixel.

What benefit to a user does a curved screen have, what benefit does another type of connecter have when in my house we have lightening chargers in every room. Will apple update iOS to once again maximise efficiency and ease of use for customers? Until then, this iPhone is my last iPhone.

Have fun buying a phone from a company that makes over 90% of it's revenue from AD sales and that considers your privacy to be a commodity. I agree the curved screen is dumb and hope it isn't true, but complaining about changing the connector is a silly argument since you'll have to do that anyway if you switch to a Google phone.

maybe he doesn't know the pixel also has USB type-C

And how many ten's of billion devices have a 3.5mm audio jack as standard I wonder?

I wonder how many of those 3.5mm jacks are used every single day, if at all? I have devices with 3.5mm jacks in them which I have never, ever used. By contrast, people plug their iPhones into Lightning every single day. Many never even plug anything into the 3.5mm jack built-into their old iPhones.

Unfortunately no. Lightning is 8-pin and USB-C is 24-pin.

Unfortunately no. Lightning is 16-pin last time I checked, with a 17th as general ground. The iPadPro can use all of them independently.

I really don't see this happening for this years iPhone. Apple just ain't the kind to have two different iPhones at one announcement. The 7S, 7S plus an a 10th anniversary edition? Lol not happening. It's either one or the other.
I love coming back to these definitive comments because they're always so sure and so off the mark. Bookmarked.

Have you tried a modern day stock Android phone before?
[doublepost=1488304227][/doublepost]All of the folks complaining about the move away from Lightning? Why??

Lightning is proprietary. USB-C is a universal standard. Standards are good for the user and good for the market. Devices that work with your computer will work with your phone and vice versa. It saves you money, folks!

People seem to forget that these rumors usually affect the next iPhone. The design for the upcoming iPhone was finalized before the current iPhone even came out.

I don't get the outrage about the connectors. Who cares? Its gonna plug in the same way. My ipad will still use lightning even if the new iPhone goes USB-C. Why would that bug me? So I will have to plug in another charger if I want to charge both at night. I would have to do that anyways right? What, is apple gonna make everyone turn in their lightning cables and exchange them for USB-C? No. So why is everyone crying about the connectors? If USB-C gives the new iPhone quick charging capabilities then they'll stop crying.

While a lot of rumours hit the mark, many don't:

The iPhone SE didn't have a curved display like the iPhone 6: https://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/02/what-the-iphone-se-might-look-like/

The iPhone 7 Plus *did* get a dual-camera system, but no smart connector: https://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/15/iphone-7-plus-photo-dual-lens-smart-connector/

iPhone 7 didn't have a flush rear camera: https://www.macrumors.com/2016/02/02/iphone-7-flush-camera-no-bands/

That last one is a perfect example of how you can remember "they predicted there would be no antenna bands - the rumours are right!" despite the prediction being 50% wrong.

On this note, I can certainly see no inlet connector at all. Just a smart connector and wireless charging, syncing wifi only. Just can't see why you still need to teather a phone to a socket & cable much longer.

I have a Samsung S7. Not a single issue. Zero. I've had that for several months now. Great phone, great camera, great display, great battery and I don't have to go through the unbearable iTunes. I don't know if it's worse or better than an iPhone 6 or 7 and frankly I don't care. I bought it because of its VR features, but I'm more than happy besides that, in fact I would buy it again. So my experience is completely opposite than yours. And yes, I paid it 534 Euro, more than 200 less than an iPhone. That is certainly much less.

I keep seeing folks posting about desiring major revisions to iOS but I just can't see it happening. There are so many average, everyday users who are familiar with iOS across iPhone and iPad devices to think that Apple will make a wholesale change in iOS.

I remember when OS X Lion came out, Apple was focused on a "Back to the Mac" campaign to bring several iOS features to the Mac.

I feel it's long overdue that a "Back to iOS" campaign happens, where Apple brings Mac features to iOS.

One more step towards convergence.

This doesn't need to be a jarring change. They can just put some features in there for power users. iOS could become so much better if Apple gave us some control.

Sounds good to me :)

Plus I just ordered this :D

I honestly welcome the addition of USB-C. Finally a standard port that everyone is adapting.

And it kinda makes sense if one thinks about it. Lightning has stuck in its time with USB2.0 spec. Hence, an eventual change of port (well, at least the cable. iPad Pro 12.9 has USB3 capable lightning, but no cable on market supports it) is imminent. Shifting to USB-C satisfies the shift to USB3.1 spec and less people complain as it's an "open" standard.

I have probably 15 Lightning cables, all OEM Apple or MFi-certified. They work with all my computers.

The last USB-C to USB-C cable I bought was from Black Squid, and started getting very hot connecting my MacBook Pro to my CalDigit USB-C dock. The seller refunded me immediately, told me to destroy the cable.

Apple very much backs USBC it just wasn't ready till way later than they wanted, I think Lightening was a bridge.

I wasn't referring to Apple's involvement in USB-C, only the physical connector differences.

Unfortunately no. Lightning is 16-pin last time I checked, with a 17th as general ground. The iPadPro can use all of them independently.

There are only 8 pins in the connector:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_(connector)

https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/Lightning_Connector

There are 8 pins on each side of the cable for a total of 16 pins, but they are duplicates. Pin 1 is ground.

It's the same every year, it's a bit baffling. From where I'm sitting the rumours usually have a pretty solid grain of truth in them. Last year around this time we were all arguing over whether or not Apple would get rid of the headphone jack - I believed those rumours, and I think these have some truth in them too.

They are not duplicates. They are assigned as duplicates in the basic Lightning spec assignments, and are dynamically assigned depending on which orientation the plug is inserted. The 12" iPadPro can use all 16 pins, with 8 pins on each side of the port. Sorry. Lightning is 100% assignable, and all of those pins can be assigned to anything Apple wants them to be to the extent the hardware supports it. Current configurations of Lightning do not support that (except the 12" iPP), but it does not mean Lightning is not capable of it as you suggest.
