Don't get me wrong, I'll most likely be buying one... but I don't have to be happy about it :p

Most are not happy about the prices they pay. What choice do they really have? A used iPhone, refurb 6s still can be expensive for the average consumer. They have chosen to procreate within the "Walled Garden."
I have chosen the "Walled Garden" (although I no longer Procreate) and hate the expense. This is why Apple's value is climbing again. The realization that Apple has for all practical purposes finally locked the "above average salary" consumer in permanently. This and the realization that an iPhone "Super Cycle" is around the corner. Apple's record profits in no way contribute to a better product. Just more people locked in the "Walled Garden" with no alternative. Almost akin to shooting fish in a barrel, IMO. :apple:

Lightning is better :( can't see why they would downgrade to a lesser more bulky standard... most apple users, have plenty of lightning cables lying around.
Because it's not just about apple users. Apple moving to USB-C standard will encourage the entire industry to make the switch so we can all use the same cable. I don't WANT to have a bunch of lightning cables lying around I can only use with Apple stuff.

The 2m Apple MLL82AM/A USB-C 2.0 charge cable, Model A1739, is rated for 5A/100w. It comes with the 2016 MacBook Pros (13" and 15" versions), or you can buy it separately for $19 SRP.

I agree with you 100%, though. It has taken a lot of research and headache on my end to find reliable, safe, cables and chargers for my USB-C MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops.

That's good to know. Too bad Apple didn't include USB3.

I think the existence of that spreadsheet is proof of how complicated USB-C can be.

I don't see it causing any headaches, other than having to replace cables.

Headaches in allowing people to do things with the hardware on iPhones that Apple really, really doesn't want to allow. (USB C docks being just the beginning).. I can see some enterprising hacker figuring some way to get around various locks using the USB C connector.. That would be bad..

Still doesn't change the fact that is is not in Apple's best interests to change iOS products to USB C. So that means they won't.

I so so want USB-C EVERYTHING. The transition is rough but my god. Such a nice connector that's actually a STANDARD. I'm sick of proprietary hardware stuff with apple. Now the newest android phones and iPhones will share the same charger which will be excellent! Also with our Macs now, our iPhones and other devices will be using USB-C to USB-C cables. Fully reversible each way, doesn't matter which end of the cable goes where. So much nicer.

You can do way more with USB C than you can with lightning. Not fair to say lightning is better. Apple is a part of the group that developed USB c. Sure it's a little bigger but it is not quantifiably a better cable than lightning.

For the record I think it will still be lightning.

I still think we will have to wait until more leaks of the phone come out like actual park leaks....they maybe have meant USB c - lightning cable now instead of USB a - lightning.

There is simply too much contradiction right now to know who's source are accurate.

And before Apple adopted the curved screen it was rubbish and a gimmick.. Now once apple has it, it will be the best thing since sliced bread.. You watch how people praise this when 12 months ago all they said it was such garbage.

Not me. It'll always be garbage.

Exactly. And the last thing Apple wants for its mobile customers is to wade through all that. Just use MFi-certified Lightning and you're good to go. Or even better, go 100% wireless with the 2017 iPhone(s). Doesn't get any more simple than that.

Charging cable should be unchanged as long as possible. If lightning is only used for five years, then they should have stayed with 30 pin and directly gone to USB-C.

But the shareholders would not be OK with the revenue gap that MFI licensing brings. Lighting is a key factor there.

Going USB-C, as others have said, would be a very pro-consumer move, especially since Apple's laptop lineup has already gone there. The dumbest thing is that the headphones provided with the iPhone 7 cant be plugged into Apple's laptop offerings. The dongle is female 3mm headphone, while the laptops are male 3mm. As I said, gotta keep the shareholders happy.

Apple, like most every corporation, won't pull away from the cash trough. Those of you who ascribe deity level reverence to the mighty Cupertonians need to come to grips with this.

That is your opinion, and I respekton that. You can stick for a century on a century old tech or you dare do what others are afraid and make a move to the future. Stupid people think a tech like headphone jack will stick around forever because you know....it is standard. Standard my ass. Sooner or later someone have to dump it and who else is more influencal then Apple to do that. If you wait for the right time, it will never be right because stupid people are not to comfortable with changes.

Movoint to new technology is only worth it if it brings improvements and dropping the headphone port literally doesn't - dropping technology that works well without having a successor that is significantly better is stupid. That's besides the point - i have more issues with how they dropped the port than why. If apple had dropped the headphone port for USB-C which is an open standard, that would have been a good move, but dropping it and retaining the lightning port was a short sighted and greedy. Dropping the headphone port was not courageous it was a cash grab and a further push away from open standards, and in the end apple knows people will buy the iPhone regardless.

OK, it's a 0.001% chance ;)

They only do "stuff like this", if it fits in with their long term strategy for that particular device category. USB-C in no objective way fits into Apple's long-term mobile device strategy, i.e. wireless audio, wireless data transfer (including iCloud), wireless charging (coming soon, already here in Apple Watch).

USB C on an iPhone absolutely FITS INTO their device strategy. Don't know what you are smoking there. It's stupid to have your most popular device using a different connector than the rest of your entire line up. I'm sorry, it JUST IS. You can't sit there and act like the iPhone is completely separate from everything else that Apple is working on. That's wishful thinking and not at all how a major company like Apple who is all about integrating their products and having a streamlined eco-system works and thinks. So yes, Apple will ABSOLUTELY change the lightening connector either this time or definitely next year.

Good. USB-C is where they should have gone with the 6S. Very annoying, but dropping ligtning for an open standard would actually be courage unlike what they tried to say was courage last year.
Yep! More so they need to open up the OS so that developers can write custom software for whatever hardware they want. Mind you this isnt important for IPhone but is huge for iPad. Apple, via MiFi takes the IPad out of consideration for many dedicated uses that simply don't have the volume to justify the expense of MiFi.

I could see vastly improved adoption by simply droping MiFI as a requirement to get access to the I/O port. Not only do you increase sales you open up adopting by more develooers in the USA which would go a long ways to improving public opinion.

Yet iPhone is the number one selling smart phone on the market. There isn't one Android phone that even comes close.
They don't account for the fact there are hundreds of phones, made by numerous brands, running android. Whereas there is obviously only one brand selling iPhones.

We'll see how it is implemented. Sam Sung's implementation was poor and offered no real benefit.

If Apple follows suit, it too will be poor and offer no real benefit. Or perhaps Apple has a way to make it worthwhile.

In any case we'll just have to wait and see.

Apple was listed 5th on most admired company list. I don't think they have an image problem despite what the loud, but very small and statistically insignificant MacRumors forum group says.

Can someone please tell me what advantages USB C has over lightning?

Higher data rates would be the number one benefit. Remember if the hardware supports it you can get TB3 performance levels.

Second everything about USB-C is defined in a standard. You must comply to use it. However USB-C brings sone of the ugliness of apples port with it.

Very widely available hardware. I get a lot of E-Mail from various source in the electronics industry. It seems like new USB-C hardware comes out weekly. The industry support is pretty huge, possibly bigger than when uSB 3 or USB 2 came out. There is hardware for almost anything you can imagine.

Hey i don't know if this rumor has any truth to it. What i do know is that USB-C is a long term solution. The capabilities it permits means that we could see an iPhone that morphs into a work station simply by plugging into a monitor. USB-C also provides huge advantage for iPad offering up many opportunities for special application of that hardware.

The iPhone and Mac line has never used the same port. This is the first time the iPhone cable doesn't connect to the Mac. This could easily be resolved by Apple including a USB-C/lightning cable.

Yep. They're just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks.

There have been test units found with the iPhone 6 and 6S that had USB-C ports. They've been testing this for a while. It's not seeing what sticks at all, the issue with the rumors is they're based on the supply chain, so it can sometimes be hard to differentiate what they are working on to be released 2-3 years from now, and what will be released this year.

This is not random, or illogical.

true, but there's no reason why it shouldn't.

It never used the same port, but it was also always able to connect to each other. This time you can't connect the phone to the Mac devices, so like you said an easy solution is to include a USB C to Lighting CABLE, not a DONGLE in the box.

I ended up buying the cable. It's great to use the same power brick to charge my phone. I wish Apple put several USB-C ports on their power brick.

I don't own an iPad Pro, but the cable is handy for charging it at 29w.

That would be pretty damn dangerous.. iPhones are not compatible with QC2/QC3 chargers.. Keep the Lightning on iPhones, since that is what Apple is going to do anyways..
