if the information turns out to be true then Apple's new line of iPhones would lack compatibility with more current Qi wireless charging accessories.

Nobody seriously thought Apple would make the next iPhone compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard, did they? No way. Apple would develop its own standard.

First, this is a story about an unreleased and unannounced product. Second, I really don't think Apple is intentionally trying to harm its customers by allegedly making the (unannounced) wireless charging feature work slower. Perhaps this is an engineering trade-off meant to ensure safety or a better customer experience. Apple can't do anything without people whining. And it's often about the stupidest things!

Apple has been nickel and diming us on storage for years, don't see why they would stop there.

Plugging it in with a cable requires less than a second and can deliver actual fast charging without the losses of induction charging. So please tell me again why wireless charging is not a gimmick.

For yourself in your own home maybe not but there are so many places around the world (especially airports) the provide wireless charging stations and now a lot of cars have wireless charging cubby holes so giving people that option without having to carry a cable around is just better.

Now that a lot of plug sockets have USB ports has meant a lot of people don't need the actual plug with them just the USB to lightning cable so this is just another step away from a cable. Hopefully

I'm fine with slow-charging, as long as the battery's health lasts long. Have charged my iPhone 6 on a daily basis with mostly 1A and it aged well until lasts month. Now it dies within a day when not used and in 1h under load. With upgrading to 7S I'll expect an even longer health.
Yeah, would be nice to get 1,000 cycle batteries like the Watch or MacBooks.

So with inductive charging we will charge our iphone 8 and 7s plus at around 2.5 hours, and with lightning to usbC at 1.5 hours

I think the only reason to use wireless charging is when going to bed. Slap it on the charging pod and it should be fully charged in the morning. I doubt I would buy one of these charging pods, but if I did, that's the way I would us it. Any other time, I'm going with the trusty cord.

Last year I bought a Samsung Note 7 and only had it for a day or two before the fires started. It came with a wireless charging pod which seemed VERY slow to me. Needless to say, it went back and I bought the IP7 on the presale day.

My wife's '16 Toyota Camry supposedly has a wireless charging pad, but it doesn't work very well or at all. Maybe it puts enough juice in the phone to maintain the present battery level, but forget above adding "juice" above that level with it.

This decision if true really does just stink off being nothing more then a business decision to maximise profits, weather it's to save money by using older and cheaper components, or so they can use the faster wireless charging as an excuse to upgrade next year, when your dealing with an international well established standard, their is no other excuse..
And no doubt to help with Apples bottom line even further, they will fix it so the wireless charging will ONLY work with Apples own charging pads, or those made under license, all set up so Apple maximises profits from said international well established standard it had nothing to do with!

Think about it, these rumours are claiming on a phone costing £1000 Plus which will be the most expensive in any phone store in the U.K, you will get slow old cheap wireless that's an international standard, but it won't come with a charging pad and you will have to pay a premium price for a charging pad that works with it because Apple will have locked that down! All to maximise profits, forget about those nice wooden charging pads..

It took us a lot of courage to ditch the headphone he jack, the future is wireless headphones... oh but you will have to use OUR wireless headphones or licensed ones to work with our devices...

Be prepared for Apples 'courage' and £100 for a charging pad.

What's the point in Apple being part of the Qi consortium if they just make their own anyway?

As long as it helps them reach the trillion dollar mark and keeps the shareholders happy hey....the most important thing

Pretty sure the iPhone 7 not only still has a headphone port, but any wireless or Bluetooth headphones work with it as well.

They aren't making their own? Why do you think that? They use the Bluetooth standard but thanks to its W1 chip you can only used licensed wireless headphones, or there own, this will be the same according to rumours, they will use an existing QI standard yes but then lock it down to really just make money. They'll make some software or hardware lock so only licensed or Apples own pads will work.

Erm, ok?? Did you miss the media storm last year about the removal of the headphone port?? I guess you did.

You can use any bluetooth headphones with the iphone 7 still though! You can't use any standard Qi mat with the new iphone8 as it looks like they're locking it down to their own spec. That's what I meant.

Surely being part of the Qi standard should encourage cross industry standards for the benefit of all.

Instead we get yet more Apple proprietary nonsense.

Nope. They removed the older 3.5mm analog headphone port. There’s still a lightning port for audio as well as a adapter for 3.5mm headphones in the box.

And any wireless/Bluetooth headphones work with iPhone 7.

Slower charging is usually better for batteries' long-term health, so in addition to the above, this could very well be intentional (for non-evil reasons, despite comments above) on Apple's part.

Are you sure about this? They ship the iPhones with 5W USB power adapters, yet also market the 12W ones as compatible with anything starting from iPhone 4 and younger? So I charge everything with 12W chargers, is this wrong?
