How is it there are so many people on these forums complaining about news for an iPhone that's two generations from the current model? What part of Mac Rumors do you not comprehend? Whining about 2018 predictions on a site where rumors is on the masthead is literally a Trump-like level of stupidity. "Slow news day!" "OMG, Rumors about the 9 before the 8 even comes out?" "Facepalm!" ":D:(:p:eek::rolleyes:o_O!!!". Do you actually read what you write? Not clever, not hip, not funny, not helpful. Please. Just. Stop.

Well the 5.8" iPhone technically will have 5.2" 16:9 area so I am guessing this is what the rumor is referring to. So, the 6.4 inch iPhone will likely be even bigger. Personally, I am accustomed to bigger phones so I am all for it.

Please, please, give us back the physical dimension of the iPhone 5s / SE, with the latest tech in it, including no-bezel display!!!

It would make sense to introduce two models with different screen size.
If the rumors are true this year we'll have just one OLED phone, but many people are used to the plus size, and could be happy with a display bigger than 6''.

Correction, not the "size", the iPhone Plus' size is RIDICULOUS to the majority. A lot of the 7 plus buyers are simply for the dual camera configuration. If iPhone 7 had also the dual camera configuration, the ratio of 7/7+ buyers ratio will be 2/1 or larger, instead of the current 55/45.

Not exactly surprising... that's why I'll keep my 6S or get a 7 or 7S, because next year it'll be a mini iPhone 8 anyway. Most likely a new OLED screen in the same size body. And a cheaper price...

Surprising? It shouldn't be. This article holds no substantially at all. The possibilities of what could happen 16 months from now with parts suppliers and manufacturers could change everything Apple even has planned for any future iPhones.

This is one of those articles is just more interesting to read the comments than it is to actually take anything away that has meaning behind it with the article itself.

The XA it is as wide as an iPhone 4.7 with a 5 inch edge to edge. Taking off the top and lower bezel does to change that. My Girlfriend and Mom found both those to be "big" and opted for an iPhone SE. 5.28 is big one way or the other for SE users.

They need to make the iPhone SE with edge to edge. Whatever size that comes out to (4.6?) - and call it a day.
Yeah, it depends what bezels are like and where that extra diagonal space is going. It would likely be the current 4.7" model but taller as the anniversary edition has a taller aspect ratio as well. But what I think they should do is just get rid of all bezels from the 4.7", and I think that would appeal to both markets.

I remember in the old days (well, sort of, I was pretty young) people made jokes about phones getting smaller and smaller (Zoolander features a scene where he uses a phone so small it can only be operated with the tips of his fingers), yet now phones just keep getting bigger and bigger. What do you think the maximum size for a phone will be? Are any of you actually interested in an iPad Mini-phone?

Larger phones mean bigger viewing screens, which is important to people watching YouTube or Movies or sports. Phones will start getting a lot smaller again when the video is displayed on glasses or contact lenses and the phone itself is only needed for storage and transmission.

Why would they go 5.8" and then go 5.3" and 6.5"? Are these supposed to be separate from the 5.8" model? This will be a lot of work for developers.

first 'bezel-less' phone based on existing iphone chassis which is well known in terms of production, allowing them to focus on the specific challenges around the screen etc. Minimises risk.

Then next year once they're more comfortable with the processes needed, they can rework the chassis size and adapt the screen accordingly

I use my iPad Mini with cellular data as my "phone" now... and for several years now- works great! Since the bulk of my "phone" needs is texting, email & web with only a few calls, iPad Mini with buds + microphone is an excellent alternative to having a cell phone monthly fee. Instead, 2GB of data for 3 months at $25 means my maximum annual fee for cell service is $100 and I don't really feel like I'm missing anything. In fact, the bigger-screen Mini seems like the perfect 2-birds-with-1-stone option for my "cell phone" needs. Is this a good option for everyone? Of course not. But it works perfectly for me... and saves a great deal of money because it doesn't have the monthly toll.

Just how many different screen sizes is Apple going to make?

As many as people will feel compelled to buy. WE motivate Apple to do this stuff... by buying anything they roll out.

6.46"? Apple needs to start selling iPants with big iPockets. And an iBelt to hold up said iPants.

The "pants with bigger pockets" objection was slung around to death when the 4.7" & 5.5" rumored iPhones started flying. They launched and I'm still watching for anyone in pants with bigger pockets. Apparently no one in America bought the bigger-screen phones... and I've been all over.

I suspect someone is going to work up a mockup of the 6.46" screen in a bezel-less iPhone and find that it is probably very close to the 5.5" case size now. So if the 5.5" works without the burden of special pants, I'm guessing a 6.46" would work just as well... because it would probably fill about the exact same space.

Any rumors on iPhone 10 yet?
  • Thinner (because that matters to HQ more than anything except margin): "...by far the thinnest & lightest iPhone we've ever made"
  • Ejecting the entire battery out to realize thinner. Separate battery packs in a variety of sizes sold separately.
  • Ejecting the camera out to realize thinner too. Separate camera packs in a variety of designs sold separately.
  • Both spun as ejecting "legacy technology" (both) older than the 3.5mm headphone jack while empowering customers to buy any size battery and any quality of camera they want. Both will connect via a new proprietary something so that only Apple accessory packs are available for at least 3 months following launch. Even though you'll have to buy a battery pack for the phone to work away from an electrical socket, the pack's size & weight won't be counted in the "thinner & lighter" phone spin at the big reveal.
  • Introducing the new quad camera module because 4 camera packs are obviously better than 2.
  • Introducing the new octet camera module because 8 camera packs are obviously better than 4.
  • Because of the thinness possible with both hardware ejections, the existing Lightning port will be a "too thick" engineering issue, so... introducing the thinner Lightning 2 port
  • Lightning 2 dongles sold separately (but exclusively available from Apple for about 3 months)
  • A14 processor (they'll skip A13 for the superstitious). iPhone 10 running iOS 12 with an A14 processor- someone will think that (10-12-14) is brilliant.
  • Pro and/or Edition tag to help roll out...
  • $1499 because people will rationalize any price, spinning it as feeling more elite and solving some of the low stock problem around launch. With the better battery pack, better camera module and a headphone dongle $1799. With the new AirPods 3 in white, black, gold, or rose gold, add $200= $1999. With the quad camera pack, add $300. With the octet camera pack, add $500. Of course, everyone MUST get the octet camera pack... so they don't have to feel inferior, rationalized as why buy a $1500 iPhone and NOT get the best camera pack.
  • 8K video recording, 8K FCPX and iMovie on 8K Macs. Later, 8K iPad Super-Pro. But still :apple:TV playback hardware capped at 1080p.
  • Introducing new Apple financing for iPhone for a dirt cheap monthly fee at a big fat interest rate for much too much time (to hit a target monthly payment number), with a cool way to pay the bill using Apple Pay. Emphasize the low monthly payment instead of total price.
Geekgasms for all. Then craigslist ads for kidney sales to prepare. All ;)... hopefully.

Apple most likely has the next 3 iPhone gens being planned. They don't knock a completely new model out in 5 months! This article can be totally plausible, and it is utterly expected next years normal iPhone will have new designs and OLED screens.

So, after 10 years, Apple is abandoning the S models?

It's possible Apple didn't want the Samsung Galaxy models to have a higher number than the iPhone. They may be concerned that some people may think a Galaxy S8 is better than a "lesser" iPhone 7s, Galaxy S9 better than a "lesser" iPhone 8, etc. Perception, even if it's flawed, is important.

Look at the bright side. If Apple discontinues the iPad Mini, we will just have to wait for the iPhone 11 in order to get the same screen size.

Or, we get really lucky and Apple puts a 16:9 5.8" phone out this year.
