Took delivery of the iPhone Air in beautiful Space Black this morning.
I’ve watched so many unboxing videos so I didn’t know if I’d be as amazed, but wow I’m amazed. It’s absolutely incredible to hold and I’m genuinely excited to use an iPhone in a long, long time.
I’ve always been a Pro Max user, ever since it was a thing, and I really liked the 16 Pro Max, but I’m more than happy to have a year without the Pro Max. Yeah, I’m giving up the better cameras and the better battery, but I don’t take a lot of pictures, and the ones I do take are what I’d consider fairly standard and don’t require a lot of the Pro features. Also, my wife is the chief photographer and she has a Pro Max so I’m good.
In regards to the battery, I hear it’s really good, but I’ve already purchased the MagSafe battery pack for the Air that I’m more than happy to use. I’m thinking of it as a hybrid phone - an Air 95% of the time, then on those days where I’m out all day travelling, I have the battery to give me Pro Max battery when it’s needed.
Plus, because the 16 Pro Max is such a beast, I’ve been using it pretty much all of the time and not so much my M4 13” iPad Pro, which I absolutely love. I’m thinking I’ll now use the iPad more when I’m at home and that’s personally a big positive for me, having two thin devices that compliment each other.
The other often mentioned aspect of the Air, the speakers, is a non-issue for me. I only use my phone speakers for YouTube videos and doom scrolling, and the speaker is way better than I thought it’d be. Literally gone back and forth on YouTube between my 16PM and the Air and there’s really not much in it at all. Obviously if I was to put a film or music on I’d notice a difference, but I have Sonos headphones for that. For podcasts, YouTube commentary, etc, it’s perfectly fine.
The decision to go with the Air was also made easier by the fact that I find the 17 Pro models so ugly. Absolutely love the Air though. It’s different, it’s refreshing and it’s a pleasure to use.
