When they release their Fold, I think the Air will be discontinued. People want the newest tech, Air will be tomorrows tech once the Fold comes out. Or it could resurface as the cheaper E model in the future.

Don’t see it happening. But Apple can be stubborn thinking they can make it more appealing. More colors. Etc.

So where would the second camera go?
Look at the pics -- they clearly designed this with the expectation that something else eventually may sit next to the camera in the existing plateau. Moving the chip that's there is not easy, but it is doable.

Yes but only bc it's much more cost-prohibitive to cut bait after one gen

The phone is stupidly expensive and that's killed it.

If Apple treat it like what it should be -- the MBA of the phone lineup -- and (assuming they're able given price of components) drastically slash the price accordingly (as they did with the MBA) -- it will be a true SE replacement and eventually a real asset in the lineup and not gone in two cycles like the Mini. It's a $600-650 device being sold for $1k. Hilarious stuff they tried to get away with here.
In the beginning though Apple sold the Macbook Air alongside the regular and Pro lines as the lightweight option. Things eventually got to the point where they could cram base model performance into the smaller chassis but it took a few years. Compare this to the iPad line where the Pro model is the light, thin one and Air is just a name!

They may well try a 2nd gen model with an extra camera on a deeper camera bump, or a 0.5x single lens capable of a 1x crop together with some silicon battery tech to cram more power in to see if it sticks. The Apple way is to at least reiterate for one extra gen before pulling the plug.

Yes, I think there will be.

There were two minis, and three pluses. Even with poor sales, they keep the form factor around for more than one year to try to get the most out of the engineering and design. It won't be warranted based on sales, but they will almost certainly make at least one more version of it (maybe two).

All the rumours past few days still say IPhone 18 delayed to Spring 2027. And the latest ones don’t even mention A20 chips for the Air. With production coming to an end all the rumours past few days no longer mention an Air 2.

I also noted they want to push people towards the Pro. Then there’s articles about multiple new designs every year and there’s the lack of marketing for the Air. We could end up with lots of discontinued fashion phone models.

Personally find the current strategy a mess .The 16e gets all the hate to as it’s too expensive for what it offers.

Anyway im not sure minor updates to the 18 pro will tempt people to update? I don't like this pushing people onto more expensive iPhones. Anyway with the 16e makes you wonder why they don’t sell last years phone for less rather than a separate model?

I feel sorry for everybody who got the Air and Apple could abandon it so quick now we know why it was called Air and not 17 Air as it looks like it was a test for the fold phone. I plan to keep my Air for years as like the slim design and Apple no longer makes iPods so really this is a perfect iPod touch update.

  • There will be no 2nd generation iPhone Air
  • There will be no iPhone 17e in 2026 but there will be an iPhone 18e in 2027

It is expected to be around. There was an article on this site just this morning talking about the Air 2 and its expected release date.

I think it’s a bit too early to make that judgement. If they do it’s not like the Air stops working for people who bought it.

Um ya.......apparently you haven't been reading the latest articles on the Air. It is expected to be around. There was an article on this site just this morning talking about the Air 2 and its expected release date.
That’s true but this mixed rumours is worrying some say there will be Air 2 others say no Air 2

the iphone 18 getting delayed to 2027 is not a delay, apple is changing there release cycle to include the fold in the september release. fold/air 2/pros will be released in sept while the 18 and 18e will be first quarter 2027

Why not follow the same cycle as the iPhone mini and the iPhone 14plus and beyond. They'll produce another cycle of airs but it will be low volume sellers and eventually discontinuing of the product line in 2-3 years when apple decides to change their approach. That or maybe kill the air in 2-3 yr and have the fold become the third product line.

Honestly phones are to a point where a 2 year cycle wouldn't be a bad thing. I realize that'll never happen, but for most of the general public, releases have been iterative for the past ~5 years. Not saying there's not a big difference between the iPhone 13 and the 17 series, but a 13 with a fresh battery can still accomplish everything just fine today - just as an example.

You're probably looking at the wrong photo.

That something else next to the camera already exists. It's the A19 Pro chip.

Moving the chip down below the plateau is exactly what the iPhone 17 Pro/Max logic board looks like. Adding a second camera means less battery space, which means it would be a regular iPhone 17.

I'm not.

It's funny you bring this up because I was just thinking about MKBHD's annual awards ceremony and wondering if the Air would make it, I have a hunch it will because it's the newest we've seen of something in a long time. And it was one of the more exciting launches in a long time. So I don't feel we've seen the last of the air.

Then I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion.

Apple would have to completely redesign the logic board and battery to accommodate a second camera.

The A19 area is the only part of the logic board where it's stacked. This means has two PCBs and contains A19, NAND, NFC, audio, and some power management. Pushing that stacked part down would require twice as much space because the rest of the logic board is not stacked. This would kill battery capacity.

I would like for apple to take the technology from the air, and transfer this to the 18 or 19 line (799 cost range). So thin design, 2 camera's platueu, 2 speakers. Ultra thin, 6.3 in screen (I would prefer smaller but who am I kidding).
