The amount of hateful comments for the air is insane right now. 'No one asked for a thinner phone' type of comments - even from people like mkbhd is crazy.

Firstly I asked for a thinner phone for years - I said I wish there was an air model for the iphone. Other manufacturers have been making thin phones and people have been buying them - so that indicates a lot of people want a device like this.

And it's even more stupid to make such a statement about the air when Apple have several products, and have had for years, with the air title - where thinness is the main selling point. These products have been selling well for years and continue to sell well. E.g. The Macbook Air is very popular and sells incredibly well.

These haters also forget from around 2010, part of Apple's huge rise in appeal was making powerful, thin and ultra stylish devices.

For people that hate the air, do they know there's another three models available?

-

Yes I know I’m going to get questioned/hate because I am ‘upgrading’ from my pro my model to a black 512gb air model. But it’s what I wanted for a while. I have other thin devices which are amazing and convenient to use whilst travelling for work/personal use. I can add iPhone air to this.

^^^ well said!

I am eagerly awaiting my 17 Air on launch day and haters can say anything they want - won't change my mind.

you mention mkbhd.

i was geared up to buy the iPhone immediately.
but i happened to see mkbhd's short, first impressions of it.

i decided to wait to buy.

there is only one thing that im waiting on from real-life users reports after they have been using for a few days:
how hot does this phone get?
with titanium body, and not a lot being mentioned about how it dissipates that heat, i think it may be running hot a lot of the time. with AI needing all the RAM it can get, i can see it becoming very uncomfortable to use.

i really love the thinness. but i don't want an iPhone experience that is always throttling.

it may have been for heat reasons why apple is using 1 less core (5 cores) when compared with the iPhone Pro and Pro Max, and not just to make a marketing/sales price difference.

It is what it is. If people are popping blood vessels over what phone you’re going to get, you’re better off not caring what they think.

The Air looks promising and I am thrilled to try something new after having pro max models for the last few years. I hope you enjoy yours.

This was one of the reasons I went for the air. My usage is fairly light, even for work, it’s mainly documents or emails.

Throttling would happen, I assume, on heavy tasks like video editing - but I have a desktop setup for that. If I had pro uses, then the two pro models are there.

Yes I’m actually excited for an iPhone for the first time in years. Like you I’ve just upgraded the pro max and they’re great but it felt very same-ish and after about a day, I forget it’s a new phone.

This air is significantly different whilst retaining enough pro features for me to preorder.

About the hate - it just seems crazy that people are hating a tried and tested method (air and pro) which has worked very well - yet for some reason, for a phone (where it’s perfect for) it’s getting massive amounts of hate.

i appreciate what you say.
i also only do light tasks on my iPhone.
what i am concerned about is if it throttles even on light tasks.
if i can handle the heat, im buying it. i decided to wait to hear real life comments about this,

If you get questioned/hate from others it's not worth your time and energy to care. Go with what's best for you, that's what the choices are there for as you stated. Not everyone needs a phone with two or three cameras and the additional weight of other offerings.

Personally, I think the Air is an amazing device. I just don’t think the tech is necessarily there. I also will say that this phone is exciting for the future.
The original Air (MacBook), ran hot, limited storage, speakers, sub par, etc. Now it’s one of the best computers you can pay.

The Air comes with compromises. In the past, I would be all in. Currently in my life, I want great pictures of my kids (both under 4).. Just not sure, if the airs single camera can deliver. (yes, I know the phone isn’t the best camera, but the best camera is the one you have at the time)

I have a 16PM and going for the Air. The 17PM does nothing for me and I love the bumper case. Brings back iPhone 4 vibes. Plus the battery pack works better for me, then leaving my phone on a charger.

I love the design of the air and am looking forward to trying it out, coming from a 16PM (which I also like). Hoping the trade offs are not too impactful on my day to day use. I’ll hang onto the 16pm during the return window just in case.
If air does not work out, 16pm —> 18pm will be my upgrade path.

I've been watching Brownlee for many years now, and that was the single worst set of comments I've ever seen from him. Lame, no fore-sight, and just wrong.. the Air is slender, elegant, and will be an amazing device

"Throw it against the wall and see.."

Oh please, it must be that time of the month for him.. yeesh

That's my plan also. I have the 16Pro and will hold onto it until I'm sure I'm happy with the Air. If I return the Air, I'll keep my 16Pro for another year.

Nothing really wrong with the Air. Get whatever phone you want and don't care what other people say or think. That's their problem.

Personally, I don't like it because it sacrifices battery and has a more prominent camera bump just for the sake of thinness.

Good thing we have options, right? I got a Pro Max which is 3.3mm thicker with more battery and less of a camera bump (while also having much better cameras).

Hope you enjoy your Air when it arrives :D

^^This 👌🏻

Buy whatever iPhone you want without giving a dam what others think, the choice is there for a reason and the line up is better than ever this year.

Sure there has had to be some sacrifices to get the Air so thin and not everyone will like that and they’re most likely the ones who will buy the Pro/Pro Max anyway.

There are also many people in this forum who have a Pro/Pro Max devices who are getting the Air this year.

Say what you like, the Air is an engineering and innovative masterpiece and it’s great to see Apple doing this, certainly not the usual incremental updates this year across the board.

I pre ordered a Space Black Air yesterday and I cannot wait to get it next week! I’ve not been this excited for an iPhone release for years.

The Air looks stunning IMO, roll on release day 🤩😃

100 agree with this! My son is approaching 4 and having really good pictures of him is great! I bought a release day 15PM and it has been fantastic. If I didn’t have a kid, would be jumping on the air!

iPhone Air has an elegant glossy look, this is clear, and there will be many people attracted to it.

However, this is a tech site, so I think it is alright to question the Air specs without feeling odd about it.

Apple have been and continue emphasising battery life and camera performance as major iPhones selling points, so it is probably ok to question that. Will it be enough for my particular needs?

Then there is a heat dissipation question (not an issue, as we simply do not know yet). If it heats up, that new battery will not like it.

Finally, the whole communication core (C1X and N1) that will need to be tested in real life vs the rest of iPhone 17 lineup.

So far many of these points are speculative, as we simply do not have the facts/numbers, yet they are well worth considering.

Myself, I will be checking both Air and iPhone 17 in store (feeling in the hand, weight, size and everything).

That's because people hated the Edge.
