The amount of hateful comments for the air is insane right now. 'No one asked for a thinner phone' type of comments - even from people like mkbhd is crazy.

Firstly I asked for a thinner phone for years - I said I wish there was an air model for the iphone. Other manufacturers have been making thin phones and people have been buying them - so that indicates a lot of people want a device like this.

And it's even more stupid to make such a statement about the air when Apple have several products, and have had for years, with the air title - where thinness is the main selling point. These products have been selling well for years and continue to sell well. E.g. The Macbook Air is very popular and sells incredibly well.

These haters also forget from around 2010, part of Apple's huge rise in appeal was making powerful, thin and ultra stylish devices.

For people that hate the air, do they know there's another three models available?

-

Yes I know I’m going to get questioned/hate because I am ‘upgrading’ from my pro my model to a black 512gb air model. But it’s what I wanted for a while. I have other thin devices which are amazing and convenient to use whilst travelling for work/personal use. I can add iPhone air to this.

Honestly why would one even listen to opinions that are contrary to their own?

MKBHD, Linus from tech tips, Mrwhoistheboss are not icons to listen to their opinion. They are not the ones who would be paying money for that phone, or using it for 3-7 years in advance.

If you like the device - just go, buy, use and enjoy.

To me personally it feels like a very beta product. And if Apple was to go “2010” they should have killed baseline 17 model and 16e, instead they are still selling those useless devices and giving people wide choice, so people would naturally compare and see Air as worse, literally “budget in soul” option. In fact, they could have made it 800-900$ to cover costs of low-tier iPhones and it would still sell well.

I love thin devices but not a fond of iPhone Air. So many disadvantages I just cannot close my eyes on. While I would have probably lived normally with single 48MP camera, I want and need two speakers because I often use them and kinda used to stereo audio on iPhones, AirPods are not my choice unfortunately.

Also I don’t get why Apple limited 4k120 to Pro iPhones, as well as no vapor chamber on Air. It would have totally made sense and battery life would have been better as well

Yes I’m actually excited for an iPhone for the first time in years. Like you I’ve just upgraded the pro max and they’re great but it felt very same-ish and after about a day, I forget it’s a new phone.

This air is significantly different whilst retaining enough pro features for me to preorder.
Exactly my thoughts.
But I still can’t decide.

I had both pre-ordered but cancelled the Air, and now I’m thinking about it again.

I’ll check it out in person at the Apple Store on the 19th and make my decision then.

The fact that the 17 Pro doesn’t have true 8x optical zoom, and that in the EU/UK we lose about 2 hours of battery life because of the physical SIM, also makes the Air more appealing.

First of all: why would you care about what othes think?

Second: why do everyone complaining about those ‘hating’ on the Air acting like the other models aren’t getting any criticism? I’ve seen plenty of that about the Pro models. It’s absolutely not exclusive to the Air. And honestly I do think the criticism on both models is valid.

I can definitely see why some pick the iPhone Air over the regular one or the Pro (Max), and vice versa. It’s a good-looking phone, but it does come with trade-offs (worse battery life and heat dissipation, only one back camera, etc). The same goes for the other ones. I ordered myself an iPhone 17 Pro Max. It will have the most features, but in a much bulkier and less sexy design. But since design doesn’t come in first place for me, I don’t really mind that.

I’m still very, very curious about the reviews on both the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro (Max), nevertheless.

Consumerism / 1st world problems are getting out of hand nowadays.
Air is a marvel of human design and engineering. We should enjoy this for what it is.

I've been watching Brownlee for many years now, and that was the single worst set of comments I've ever seen from him. Lame, no fore-sight, and just wrong.. the Air is slender, elegant, and will be an amazing device

"Throw it against the wall and see.."

Oh please, it must be that time of the month for him.. yeesh

Funnily enough, I stopped watching MKBHD because of his milquetoast approach as he never really said anything that steps out of the neutral zone. It was refreshing to see his video on the Air since he wasn't holding back and what he said about the Air seem to me like objective and logical concerns.

That doesn't mean he's "hating" the phone, no one is actually hating it, it's just that there are some very valid concerns that one should ideally at least consider before buying. I don't see what's wrong with that.

People who are bent out of shape about others' reactions to the Air seem like people who crave the approval of others. I don't know why anyone would be concerned or frustrated with someone else's opinion. Just go buy the phone you want, the Air looks great and if it suits you, fantastic, enjoy it. I hope whoever buys the Air finds it to be a slam dunk of a purchase, but if I were giving advice, I'd say first wait for a few reviews where the phone is actually used.

What was said by MKBHD is perfectly fine and valid in that there are indeed warning signs. If you wanna ignore them and buy immediately, like I said, I hope it's a fantastic device for you, but for me personally, when I hear that Apple made a battery pack just for this phone... let's just say it doesn't bode well for battery life. And having a shiny titanium edge while the Pro lineup was switched to aluminum supposedly for heat dissipation reasons... how can it be considered hate when someone points this out? These are actual objective facts that anyone ought to be paying attention to, and if you still decide to buy, then that means you're going into it with your eyes open.

People who say “no one asked for this” act as if they don’t have 3 other iPhones (including the thickest one in a long time) to buy.

Nah, it’s just YouTuber cynicism, negativity gets clicks. At least MKBHD doesn’t do the facepalm thumbnails.

As for the “warning signs”, I’d say there’s always some risk, but there’s surprisingly few this time around. The phone looks like it’s really strong and Apple wouldn’t call it their “toughest phone yet” if it was prone to bending or damage. The battery life is rated the same as iPhone 16 Plus it’s replacing, and again, we can be confident it’s going to be…. Fine. Lower then others, but fine. And the camera - well, everyone can know how it’s like, try using just your main camera for a week and decide if that’s an issue.

No one can say before trying it out, but I’d say the Air is radiating confidence, which is - of course - lost on some YouTubers (mostly because they know their audience). You just know that they’ll be snarky about it. Surprisingly, it seems a lot of them are actually quite positive about it - so…. No, I don’t see these warning signs you mention, quite the opposite. But we’ll just have to wait and see.

The 8x zoom it has will be significantly better quality-wise than the “true” optical 5x zoom of the previous generation. Their “optical-like” 2x zoom on last two generations of Pro phones, derived from the main camera, was excellent. It truly is very close to optical.

If they somehow put a true 8x lens there, it would’ve been a worse solution, because you wouldn’t be able to use it for portraits and ‘regular’ shots - which the 4x is perfect for. So, for those, you’d have to digitally zoom from the 1x/2x lens which would be much worse quality. This is the best choice they could’ve made, other than adding a 4th physical camera to the phone.

I don’t get the value of influencers. There are plenty of specs on the Apple website about each iPhone. If you have an Apple Store, Best Buy or carrier store near you, you can see colors in person and hold the iPhone in your hands. There are plenty of objective reviews available to read/watch. We all have access to the same information.

As for forum members, some just want to rain on your parade for whatever odd reason.

For what it’s worth, I have huge respect for what Apple did with the Air! I’m excited to see one in person. I’m still getting a Pro Max because I use all of the cameras regularly. But I think the Air looks to be a fantastic choice for a great many people.

Sadly, this is the world we’re living in right now. People have gotten used to forming their opinions based on what ‘influencers’ and the social media want them to think. They used to criticize TV and the news for influencing people’s views back in the ’80s and ’90s, but now with social media and ‘influencers,’ it’s way worse!
MKBHD, Linus, and other big tech YouTubers are just millionaires making videos for views. Their opinions should mean nothing to anyone with a functioning brain.

You're talking about a phone here. With everything going on in the world at the moment, deciding to create a post about people criticising a piece of metal and glass as "hateful" is the definition of a first world problem.

If there are a lot of people giving a negative opinion then perhaps their criticisms are fair. If you like it and it has specific things that appeal to you, then great, you've bought it, nobody is going to think any less of you because you bought an iPhone Air, just live your life.

The Air isn’t for me, but I don’t “hate” it. I’m not surprised geeks here don’t like it - it’s nearly as expensive as the Pro and not as powerful plus a limited camera.

For Apple it represents two things:
1. It’s a rebranded, reformulated iPhone Plus.
2. It’s a public beta test for tech to be used in Apple’s foldable phone.

Some people are more sensitive to negative remarks from others. As I’ve gotten older I find it much easier to ignore the negativity.

For what it’s worth, I think this is a fine topic for a post.

No problem with the topic, it's just the use of words like "hateful", like it's personal or deep-rooted or something. It's a little OTT.

Tale as old as time. It’s annoying dealing with all the nonsense but it’s always been this way 😅

It’s best to just put it aside. If the product is good people will buy it, enjoy it and it’ll get its dues retrospectively.

iPhone X was met with derision at launch. People whinged about the notch, wanting Touch ID back, the pricing, the scratch prone steel etc. as if it was the worst thing ever.

“The notch is so ugly! It will be so distracting!”
”UGH I will NEVER buy a phone without Touch ID!”
“$999? That’s insane! No way”

In reality, the notch was a nothingburger, Face ID and gestures worked out fine and the new flagship pricing tier became the norm across the industry. Only a vanishingly small number of people give any thought to display cutouts or Touch ID anymore.

What is remembered is the gorgeous design, build quality and feel of iPhone X. Those are the things people experienced using the device, not the things a bunch of perpetually aggrieved people online told them they should think/feel.

I suspect iPhone Air will be the same. All the crying about the battery capacity, single speaker and single camera will fall away with time.
