So sad, they finally innovated and people want the same old. I wish they weren’t as scared to keep pushing. If they added a telephoto lens, I’d switch immediately from Pro to Air.

Interesting that every "fourth iPhone" (mini, plus, and Air) have all flopped in terms of sales. Maybe it's time to just sell the base, pro, and pro max.
The plus didn’t flop initially. It was once the Pros came out that the Plus was less desirable, and once the 3 yr subsidized payment plans returned where there were many subsidized pro max deals making it cost the same or less than a plus.

But originally, the Plus offered a bigger screen, battery, 2 cameras vs 1, and higher maximum memory capacity. It was a pre-Pro Pro and sold well.

There was talk about the Air using a cheaper chip than the Pro ones wonder why the never done this to lower price?

I wonder if releasing a 17e yearly will also flop. The SE done better with fewer releases and again to 16e was priced too high

Budget device masquerading with a flagship price tag that only appeals to a very niche audience.

Should have been priced around $599 at max.

There are far too many compromises on battery life and camera especially only for the sake of a thin form factor.

The standard iPhone and Pro/Pro Max models are much better value for the money.

Apple should stick to…

The standard iPhone, Pro and Pro Max models, and their foldable iPhone (presumably coming next year) for yearly updates.

Make the mini and/or SE budget devices for those that just want a barebones device that runs iOS and price them around $399 to $499 and refresh their hardware on a 2-3 year cycle.

It flopped.

A pity. I thought it was nice how light it is compared to the normal/Pro…

But I am also in the Mini-corner, so that’s probably why… a pity that my phone taste doesn’t resonate with the market…

Funny everyone talks about battery life but it was on par or better with iPhone 15/16p..

I loved the feel of the phone but couldn’t justify buying it with a single camera , mono speaker and usb2.0 while charging a premium price tag.

I was actually looking forward to them fixing all the short comings in the next model!

It flopped.

I think the poster was referring to the “original” Plus phones: iPhone 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus, 8 Plus. The bigger 5.5” screen option. They were a huge success.

A new 5.4 inch mini coming in at <100g and 2 day battery life would sell like hotcakes. But that's too much innovation for lazy Apple.
How do you expect a mini air would get double battery life with even less room?
Even if: Why do you think a mini which accounted for 5% sales back in the days, would now sell like hotcakes just cos of magically increased battery life?

I bought one before I bought my 17 Pro Max. I loved everything about it except, no stereo speakers and one camera. The device itself was amazing to hold. I wish it had had at least stereo sound. I might’ve kept it then.

Apple has been working on a second-generation version of the iPhone Air with a lighter weight, vapor chamber cooling, and a larger battery capacity, but Apple could rethink the design.
Why rethink the design when all that is need is to rethink the price?

That is too bad. I own one and amazed every-time I pick it up how much better it compares to my old 16 Pro or the 17 Pro I tried. When I had both the Air and the 17 Pro, I reached for the Air every-time, as it felt so much better and the screen seemed so much better being larger. Definitely more upsides to it than downsides for me.

Battery life is just as good as my 16 Pro was and I never use speaker, as have Airpods, so could care less about that.
Most people don’t have this luxury to pick and choose. Of course if I had those two devices around I’d probably go for the lighter one, if all I had to do was stretch a hand and grab one. I chose what made sense and more practical for me - the 17 Pro 😉

13PM user for 4 years.

Never really liked the multi camera system as the secondary ones were always ****. Convenient at times, but ****. While they were upgraded a bit every near they never trully became as good as the main, so (for me), what’s the point ?

On my phone, I still despise to this day how it changes from the main to the potato macro whenever I try to take a doc photo.

When I saw the one camera Air, I was relived.
Ultimately I wanted an updated slate black iPhone 5 and that’s what the Air ultimately is. Love it ! It’s the ultimate classic/normal phone. Even if they already discontinue it after just 1 year, the upgraded RAM and SoC should last me easily 5-6 years. Apple upgrades RAM on phone only every 3-4 years.

No one asked for a thinner phone with ******** battery life. Feels like this is just a stepping stone to the fold anyway so it doesn't matter much to them.
I would go for one if it didn't have the camera bump, and it was a little smaller. What's the point if it's only thin on one end, then has a thick camera bump.

I tried the AIR for 14 days and eventually got a base 17. It's nice, the battery life has been over exaggerated, Its completely fine per my use and last me all day. Single camera didn't bother me. What I don't like is the single speaker. All they did was software boost the vocals to be the main loudness, everything else is quite and awful. If you have AirPods in all the time, you may give the speaker a pass, but I don't, and its not passable in 2025 at $999.

Apple can drop the price to $699 (Like Samsung did with their Edge) and I still won't touch/buy this model.

Get the Base 17 or go Pro. If you need a phone to be just a phone while being compact and light, the 16e was made for you!

Honestly, I think they either need to go back to the old one size fits all model or commit to the full spectrum of options. This indecisiveness is helping no one. Either sell the "iPhone" or might as well have a small medium and large in the SE, standard, air, pro, and future Fold and Flip lines -- for something lieke 18 or more total form factors. Guessing which "one" other option people want is not worth the effort. Apple will sell millions of Airs every time it comes out, and millions of Minis, and millions of Pluses, etc -- but they're trying to find only the options that sell tens and tens and tens of millions -- there's just too many factors at play to confidently model how one change to the product line will play out.

Apple simply gimmed it too much. They could have easily added the second speaker, and charged £699. They wanted to feature drop over time to make more money and it backfired. Hopefully, they will learn the hard way. People have started to vote with their wallets, phone competition is hotter than ever.

Also, putting so much focus on the MagSafe battery pack didn’t inspire confidence in the battery.

Do better Apple or become Nokia.

Color me completely unsurprised. I have an iPhone 13 mini. The only compromise, except for the smaller screen (ie the point of a mini): somewhat less battery life (but much better than the 12 mini).
Same cameras, performance, screen quality compared to the regular 13 and costing LESS. And they stopped selling them. I saw them a lot in the Netherlands, and I often get remarks that people would have loved to buy a mini…but I think in the US they sold badly.
What do you get for an 17 air: thinner (and 12GB, and slightly better processor, that does not translate to better performance because of thinness). The rest that matters for most people is worse: battery life and camera. And you pay MORE for the privilege. Not exactly geniuses at Apple.

Apple go the other way. Make a phone that is double the thickness and heavy, put in a 7 day battery. Sales will be off the charts.
Or go the other way, and make an actual small phone, with pro specs. (I don't need it to be thin, I need it to fit in a pocket, and I need to be able to hold it securely in one hand and still be able to reach every part of the screen with my thumb. The 3G/3GS was the perfect form factor. Also, didn't require a case. The mini was a step in the right direction, but it lacked features, especially the camera and ProMotion, and it was definitely not small enough.)
