It is getting time to replace the iPhone 12 mini, which was a replacement for a XS Max that took a dip in the pool. I appreciate the small form factor and light weight of the mini. The XS Max was too heavy. This iPhone Air seems like a good compromise. I also have to wear reading glasses now for, so the 12 Mini is a bit too small despite fitting in my hand very easily. I don't need to have the best camera, since I just take casual shots.

When you hold a flagship Android and then the iPhone, you really get a clue as to how heavy it is. The Pro models are getting heavier every year.

The new iPhone Air is Apple's thinnest iPhone to date, which means it's also lighter than the standard iPhone models. Apple also switched from titanium to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro models, resulting in some weight differences. Given these changes, Here's how the iPhone 17 weights compare to the iPhone 16 weights.

iphone-17-lineup.jpg

  • iPhone Air - 5.82 ounces (165 grams)
  • iPhone 17 - 6.24 ounces (177 grams)
  • iPhone 17 Pro - 7.27 ounces (206 grams)
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max - 8.22 ounces (233 grams)
  • iPhone 16 - 6 ounces (170 grams)
  • iPhone 16 Plus - 7.03 ounces (199 grams)
  • iPhone 16 Pro - 7.03 ounces (199 grams)
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max - 7.99 ounces (227 grams)
The iPhone Air is seven percent lighter than the iPhone 17, and 34 percent lighter than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The thin design will make the device feel even lighter than its weight suggests, and it should be easier to hold for extended periods. While it is close in weight to the iPhone 17, it has a larger display.

The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro feature 6.3-inch displays, while the iPhone Air has a 6.5-inch display and the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display.

If there is, you're holding it wrong.

Really loved my iPhone 13 mini, but new iPhone Air is very close in total volume so screen size for volume is outstanding

iPhone 13 mini = 3.932 Sq Inches

iPhone Air = 3.978 Sq Inches

I don't understand the move from premium materials like Titanium on the Pro models to aluminium, which is far less premium and utlimately not as durable, either.
It's a step backwards, while expecting a premium in the price stakes.

iPhone SE 2016: 113g
Ha, yep I didn’t own that one but I was thinking of it and the 113g weight I had looked up in the past, when making my list! Amazing little device.
I always kind of wanted one but it never worked out amid my 3 to 7, to SE2 to 13 mini transitions.
I don’t always succeed but I try to keep my devices at least 3-4 years.

It seems like even if they won’t do another Mini, they must update the SE3 at some point.

The 16e replaced the SE line; there won't be any new SE. I had hoped that the Air would be significantly more lightweight (145g was rumored), but nope. There is little to no hope for lighter iPhones in the foreseeable future.

Mistake to not compare it to the 13 mini (141 grams), which remains with no available replacement in weight, in addition to screen size.

$200 price gap between the Air and the iPhone 17, with no advantage in base storage will hurt the Air a bit (surprised the 17 got 256GB base with no price increase), but I guess the Air is aimed at board room executives who don't care anyway.

Has anyone had trouble holding any iPhone for extended periods?

It weighs about 5 paperclips less than the previous iPhone. Give me a break.
Yes. Many people don't have normal, healthy hands. I'm one of them

It's why I can't buy a Pixel even though I like the software. It's like 1mm thicker and 15g heavier than a comparable phone. Factor in a slim case and that's enough to rule it out for me

No I can't go caseless. Having to grip the phone rather than just sort of have it stick to my hand is also a no go

Pro is no longer the premium offering, the Air is. Get ready for $1100 to be mid tier pricing once the Fold and next gen Air's come out.

iPhone Air is 68 grams lighter than iPhone 17 pro max. That's 29% lighter not 34% lighter. Not sure where you got that math.
