It should be $200 less than the regular iPhone, not $200 more. It has less capabilities. People will not pay more for literally less of a phone in material and specs. If it was $200 less it would be selling well.
I don't want to turn this into another one of those threads but in exchange for video-out and the 0.5x lens (which Apple still haven't fixed the barrel distortion on, even on Pro models) you're getting a larger display without the traditional gain in mass, a faster processor, 50% more RAM, a tougher build quality and better 5G reception.

Both phones sound crap so the speaker isn't an issue and whilst the 17 has a little more battery endurance the Air is still very good and these are both overnight chargers anyway.

In no way is it an inferior phone.

This. People scream about how apple needs to bring the mini back, the Air, maybe even the plus. THEY DON'T SELL WELL. I am sure there's "plenty" of people who want one of these phones, but if they think they can make more money by axing them, making a different phone, etc, its worth it. They don't make decisions to create a phone lightly nor discontinue one lightly. If the mini or plus sold well, they would still be here. That's all that matters.

Yes, let's all sympathize with the 4 trillion dollar company's quest for ever more profit growth over any consideration for the user.

Don't like not having a smaller size iPhone? Stop whining and build your own OS and phone.

The growth of the AAPL share price is all that matters.

This is all getting so tedious now.

Do you want an iPhone Air? BUY IT - most people that have it love it and certainly couldn't give a hoot about how much its worth after 10 weeks as they have no intention of selling it.

Do you NOT want to buy an iPhone Air but instead get a base or a Pro? DO IT THEN!! - nobody is forcing you to buy an air if it doesnt suit your purposes.

The way people talk about this is just ridiculous now.

'my iPhone is better than your iPhone' is a nonsense. Accept that some people want different things from their devices and make an informed decision as to which one to buy themselves.

Im so tired of reading things basically saying 'you bought the wrong thing nah nah na nah nahhhhhhhh' and its just getting boring now.

I would buy one as a second phone if I was in a position to do so. I often wish I had a lighter option, especially in the summer, when I wear lighter shorts out someplace. I dont need a big phone for most of my use but I would still have the Pro Max as my first phone. Maybe one day.

I'm not sympathizing with them, as much as I am saying it makes sense why they discontinue products with smaller profit margins. Businesses that do not do this, go out of business. You don't invest capital into products that don't sell as well as very similar products.

Lol yeah right. If I can get an iPhone air for 40% off right now, I'll buy one to keep as a secondary phone.... This article is just designed to feed the loliphoneair crowd

It's an iPhone Mini with Pro price, who would've thought it loses half its value even before 2025 ends? LOL

With Apple's hardware margins and other costs, the estimated break-even point for Apple for the iPhone Air is likely close to $800. That's considering factory costs (components, labor, assembly, shipping, import duties, warranties) + operating expenses (R&D, marketing, logistics, etc.).

That means it's not possible for Apple to sell the Air for $200 less than the iPhone 17 without losing significant money.

conventional business philosophy is the reason we're on the brink of an ecological collapse, why income inequality is exploding, and the ******tification of just about everything, but sure, let's keep going full throttle with the trusted mantra of shareholder value and maximizing profit until there's nothing left but money

So where does one find one of these near 50% off Airs? I need to buy one for research purposes....
The values are based on trade-in offers for phones in "good" condition. You cannot buy an Air for that price unless you run a business that accepts trade-ins.

Looking at the replies here, I think the issue is this:

Apple says to the world via its brand:
We never compromise. You get the best.

Apple says to the world via the iPhone Air: Here's a compromised experience. Not only that but compromised in the key ways you rely on us for, like the camera and battery.

It's not even thin anymore thanks to Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Too many hardware limitations and hell, the camera's bump is too big.

I almost got one too… I really think the Air is a great phone, but coming from a 13 mini (finally deciding to update while it was still worth something to trade in), I decided on the base 17. I realized that I was actually downgrading in some ways from a 2021 iPhone if I went with an Air. It’s just too many compromises and that’s from a casual phone user — no social media, only a small handful of 3rd party apps, etc.
The 16e/17e is the one that’s supposed to be axing features to cut prices, we don’t need another doing the same but that actually costs more, not less.
All this being said, add me to the list to be notified when I can get one for near half off. It’s such a looker of a phone and feels great in the hand!

where can i get an used iphone 17 for 35% off or an Air for 44% off?
Article states depreciation not resell price. I'm assuming the depreciation is based on a trade in value. Selling or trading the phone to a company that will then resell it or refurbish it and resell it at a profit. Not directly to a consumer/end user. Not resell value. I could be wrong but like most have mentioned they aren't finding 10 week old iPhone they can buy at those discounts off retail.

“It’s a success” is what the collective voices from iPhone Air owners advocate since its launch.

When will acceptance sink in?

When Apple actually says or does something instead of reading rumors about what they are supposedly doing and thinking.

Never seen an Air in person, but no idea why people are so upset about this phone existing.
