Isn't there even a jailbreak app that will allow you to play a playlist as an alarm?
Not that I know how, it doesn't sound too adventurous to make..

Mabey an oversimplified idea and not viable for those who do not charge their iPhone overnight but...

Why not make a silent track, say around 10 hours long, that would play through the night and at the correct time end. The next song qued up would be the first thing you hear in the morning? You could just forward the sleep song to to the correct amount of hours/minutes befor it's time to wake up.

I'll try the idea out and post back the results. The only concern I have is any static noise that may come from my sound system. Can't say I've had it at volume much with no audio playing.

that certainly is a wierd way to do it if you ask me the easiest way to be able to listen to your music for the alarm is to jailbreak and find an app that does that or make your own ringtones for your alarms

What about just playing one entire song that's set to an alarm? Is this possible yet without having to pay for an app?

Has always been possible, just convert the entire song to a 'ringtone' (m4r) and load on iPhone and presto!
Tons of tutorials on how to do this on web.

Yes, I know. I tried that way through garage band but it limits you to only 40 seconds.

i dont understand why apple likes to limit the functionality of the iphone, it can do so much more than apple's software allows it to. i advise everyone to jailbreak, sure it may be illegal, but who cares? dont let apple cheat you, you already paid enough for the hardware to worry about apple's relations with the record industry. paying .99 for a song you already own to have it in ringtone format is absurd.

I completely agree with you but Jailbreaking is not for everyone. I tried it and loved it but I kept running out of memory with a bare installation and then it completely wrecked my phone. And before anyone bashes me that I didn't know what I was doing, trust me, I'm very familiar and advanced to hacking phones, handhelds, consoles etc.. A full restore put me back to normal but it did leave some residues from Jailbreaking. One of them being uncontrollable vibrating even though the vibrate feature was not activated. It corrected itself after 3 weeks. Most of the features are cool and sometimes tempting but I don't need it. That's just me. I fully support the Jailbreaking community but I'll wait on the fences for now.

You can get your iPhone to play iTunes as alarms actually but it requires setting up.

First, get hold of http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/

Second, get http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/

Third, get http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/iphone/

The alarm clock is free and will play any iTunes playlist. Airfoil will play iTunes through any speakers on your wifi network. Airfoil Speakers Touch goes on your iPhone and allows Airfoil to transmit through your iPhone (ie uses your iPhone as a speaker on your wifi network). So when the alarm on your mac goes off Airfoil transmits the sound to your iPhone. Obviously, this only works when you're within your own wifi network, but if you want to be woken up by Led Zeppelin on your iPhone it's the only way.

When I first got my 2g Touch (now replaced by my 3G iPhone) I had to find a solution to my alarm clock needs since my existing iPod docking clock no longer worked to charge the Touch. So I found the iHome IHL64 lamp at Office Max thinking it would be a perfect solution. I'd use my iPod only and forgo radio functions and clean up my nightstand a bit. Well, I like seeing the time during the night so I had to find something that would allow me to do that easily. What I cobbled together was a nice little set up. I use an app store app called Night Stand to display the time (not a huge fan of their alarm setup) all night and it keeps the iPhone from going to sleep so I can see the time but keep it dimmed like a real bedside clock. Then I use the built in clock alarm, from the iPhone, set to wake me up at different times on different days. It's a cool little set up and it allows me to wake up to a fully charged iPhone every day. Plus I've eliminated more clutter from my nightstand. My only complaint is that I can't turn the iPhone sideways in the dock and use it to watch movies while laying in bed ;-)

You can simply change the alarm tune of apple iphone by going into the options and then on alarm clock and then go to change alarm tune option there you can simply change the alarm tune..

iPhone 3.0 Music Alarm Clock

I have been looking for this ever since the app store came out. I just found this new alarm clock app on twitter that lets you pick what song or playlist from your iPhone or iPod Touch you want to wake.

Here is the link: http://www.iphone-alarm.com

There is a countdown so I am guessing that they are waiting for the new 3.0 to hit for it to work. I can't freaking wait cause I use my iPhones' alarm clock every morning.

Another option

For those still seeking an app that allows you to use your iPod music collection as an alarm, check out My Alarm Your Music on the app store. You can choose individual songs, playlists, audiobooks, audio podcasts. You can set a snooze time allowing you to snooze the alarm when it goes off. You can adjust the volume and brightness. You can use it as a flashlight.

Check it out if you're still looking or looking for a better alternative: My Alarm - Your Music (iTunes link)

I think the biggest problem here is licensing issues. I guess the record labels make a lot of money selling snippets of songs specifically as ringtones, and wouldn't take too kindly to whole songs being used as such (because that's what the alarm sounds basically are) without additional money paid to them.

I don't know if that's really the issue. There are tons of phones out there that let me use the songs on my phone as ringtones/alarms. My BlackBerry did that. So have all my Nokia phones. I think Motorola phones can do that also.

I've used the itunes convert to m4r method many times on all kinds of music to make ringtones and alarms. It's the easiest method and requires no software.

On Nokia's it's standard too - the normal clock alarm will go off even when the phone is completely powered off. Even on smartphones. The only exception is calendar reminders, they don't work when the phone is off.

I was also quite surprised that the iPhone doesn't do this.

My old Blackberry 8800 did this too. I was alarmed (get it?) that the iPhone doesn't do this.

AlarmTunes just came out that lets u use music thtat is on ur phone. It costs a dollar though.

This is good to see. Could use more features (fade in, multiple alarms for multiple days, etc.) but certainly a step in the right direction.

One downside to this app (and all apps like it) is that you can't exit it (by hitting the Home button) or else it won't work. You have to launch it, then let the iPhone go to sleep on it's own (or turn it "off" the iPhone with the sleep/wake button on top.)

That's a pretty big issue if you're relying on this alarm to wake you up. One wrong button press and you disable the alarm? :(

There needs to be some API that allows for tiny apps like this to work. Or some changes to the SDK. Some backgrounding, please?

If not, man, I'd really like it if Apple's own clock app let you set any song in your library as a wakeup sound. The stock sound effects they offer you are horrible to wake up to, and I don't want to have to "create a ringtone" just to use a song as an alarm.

The reviews on that are pretty harsh.

Yeah, so when's it coming out? Where is it? Looks good, I just wish I could download it. :D

I really don't know why they do this, but it's simply 1 of about 1,000 simple, obvious things that Apple doesn't feel people need while it's been a standard item for so many others in the market. No, licensing shouldn't be an issue here given the obvious methods to create tones from any song.

My daughter's relatively inexpensive Sony iPod dock/alarm clock can play a specific song for the alarm. Hell, even $5 alarm clocks can play FM music for an alarm!

Just a quick FYI. I brought my iPhone to the Apple Store for service and the technician noticed I had an alarm set. She gave me a heads up that having alarms set tends to drain the battery. I hope this isn't the case - I really like asking my iPhone to wake me up. Has anyone noticed this?

Having an alarm set shouldn't do this, Pauli.
HOWEVER, if the 'stopwatch' or 'timer' is ticking it will, because that's a running application, obviously.

But a set alarm that's turned on, COULD (and I imagine apple thought of this) be programmed using a certain kind of "event" in the OS, which doesn't require constant monitoring of the time.
So my educated answer: NOPES. set the alarm and sleep next to your baby iphone, its batteries won't drain unnecessarily.;)

my alarm doesnt ring if i the phone is switched off? can anybody pls tell me how to fix that problem.

You could just put the phone into airplane mode, it will use hardly any battery (mine only seems to use 1% maybe 2% for the whole night) and is almost as good as being off.

I did find that odd when i first got the phone, as i used to use the alarm on all my previous Nokias & turned them off of an evening, but u get used to it i guess.
