Ok, it is ridiculus that people quibble over the miniscule "problems" with the Iphone. First of all, to the writer of the article: put your Iphone's Ipod on whatever album you want to listen to and choose the repeat symbol that comes up to the left of the time-scroll bar when you tap the screen! You needn't manually start the album over with either the Ipod or the Iphone because of the fabulous invention of a repeat button. You can also choose to repeat either the entire playlist / album or the single song..wow, what a marvel of modern science!

Furthermore, would people please stop writing entire reviews over a single problem that can be EASILY corrected. The Iphone is the best phone/mp3 player ever produced. Of course it is going to have its problems, but these problems are dwarfed by the Iphone experience as a whole. And, for the record, I am not a "Mac Fanboy" who will worship Steve Jobs and Apple; but this product is truly worthy of recognition. Yes, the Iphone may require more user interaction than an Ipod, but, if you use the controls correctly, it should not be more difficult than an Ipod. Neither the Ipod nor the Iphone are made for changing options while driving! Both demand the attention of the driver! Be safe and do not be an idiot!

Yeah REPEAT it isn't that hard to find. (This guy took the words straight ou of my mouth.)

I use a simple cassette adapter in my car as the car is old and I don't spend enough time in it to justify getting a new stereo. plus, I still listen to tapes.

my only nit-picks are the GSM buzz interference and not being able to skip a track in cover-flow mode. you'd think they would have put a simple prev. next buttons in there...

I've almost got the same setup as Katie. :D

-Sony "X-Plod" head unit
-retractable 3.5mm stereo cable
-iPod (no phone yet for me)

Works great, especially for road trips. The person driving gets to plugin their music player of choice and listen to tunes.

Not having buttons all over the iPhone is actually a feature ... one that is quite obvious. It's why we love the iPhone. Complaining that they don't exist is .. well, quite honestly, ridiculous.
I'm not necessarily complaining, but I don't want to invest more than $20 to make songs on my iPhone play in the car, particularly given that I have other things I want to plug in to listen in the car - other people's iPods, devices, laptops and what have you - that don't use the 30pin iPod connector. Plus more than one car, plus I'm probably getting a new car sometime soon... Which means, there's no nice way to change songs without looking at the iPhone when using adapters and fm transmitters that are cheap and work with pretty much anything.

Meanwhile, the iPod had physical buttons that made it very trivial to manage your songs without looking, and yes, without looking. I have quite a few visually impaired friends who use iPods exclusively. A 5 year old could figure out how to skip and pause songs.

What I would have loved is for the physical button on the bottom to have been a dpad. Not only for the iPod feature, but also would be useful for scrolling or one handed use of the iPhone.

i also just got my iphone to work with the pioneer D3 Head Unit. the bluetooth phone functions work great. i have to individually push each contact onto the phone. i could do this with my cingular 3125. can the iphone do this??

thanks,

larry

Sorry, i meant that i have to push each contact onto the phonebook built into the bluetooth module. the old phone was able to beam contacts over. can the iphone do this??

thanks,

Does anyone make a dock extender and not just a small one like an extenstion cable since the iphone wont fit in a docked car adapater?

edit: i found one CableJive iPod Dock Extender Cable but its 65$ anyone know where else you can find something similar to this

I agree. The absence of tactile feedback indeed is a problem with touch screens/multi-touch.

When using my iPod, I can skip songs, adjust the volume, fast forward, rewind, and play/pause songs without even taking the iPod out of my pocket.

I have no issue with the lack of tactile feedback when it comes to the keyboard.

However, with the iPod features, I just expected a bit more. Either bigger/more prominent controls/gestures or a physical change - such as a dpad. I cannot look down at the iPhone every time to change the volume or the song :( I can't even guess, because I wouldn't know what position the iPhone would be in (portrait vs. landscape - album art or coverflow), let alone where I'd have to randomly tap and drag hoping it's the right place to change volume. If the screen didn't turn off already, that is.

Yes, the iPhone sends all my contacts into the BT on my Garmin Nuvi 660. No groups, though, just the straight list and they don't seem to be in alphabetical order. ?? No matter -- I can still quickly find whoever it is I am trying to call and that is what counts.

Just for the record, the iPhone does NOT work with USB-based iPod connections such as with the Pioneer DEH-P6900UB. Too bad, I was hoping to get rid of the 5G.

Metanoia

D'oh! :(

That would be my stereo... bad news. Oh well. I guess I can't sell my 5G once I get my iPhone either.

I have the Dension Icelink on my 2003 Audi for my ipod so I thought I would try my iphone on it...WOW it works I can play 3 play lists and skip tracks from my head unit and when a call comes in the ring comes from my speakers and then I can just use the microphone on the iphone really cool but the speaker on the phone is a little soft...hope this helps. You can email me and I will help you with your iphone/car problem. I think you can go to http://www.diceelectronics.com/ and they have a car kit cuz I don't think Dension sell in the U.S. anymore. Bad for me cuz I can't get upgrades to my icelink...but is seem to be adequate. Hope this helps. Oh forgot to say the car kit also charges my phone really cool...

GSM noise

Does anyone with the 30 pin dock connection get the GSM buzzing in their car? I am currently using a tape adapter and it buzzes unless I am holding the phone. I've noticed that when the iPhone is docked at home via the 30 pin connector, it will not buzz into the stereo. Perhaps the buzz is only there if you connect through the headphone jack, but is absent if connected through the dock connector?

Too bad Dension does not support Chevrolet (Camaro Monsoon) or JVC (HD Radio) -- zippo

icelinkplus_10.gif

I have had a DENSION Icelink since they were released and this is by far the best iPod/iPhone intergration you can get without buying an aftermarket radio.

The real advantage is the cradle so the iPhone stays stationary the entire time as it CHARGES!! No janky cables runnin all through the cig lighter (BONUS - it rotates to you can get the cover view by swinging it 45 degrees)

It plays just as loud if not louder than my iPod and I dont miss calls because it rings through the stereo! I can also use it as a sort of nav system with google maps and just hit the next arrow when I am getting close to my turns. I can also watch movies in the car with the landscape view (when I'm at stop lights of course ... hehe)

I didn't think it would replace my iPod but with 8 gigs of my most recent movies and music - I haven't used my iPod since I got my iPhone. :)

Nissan Murano iPOD adaptor and Garmin 360

I had a iPOD 30 pin adaptor in my Murano that I used with my iPOD and now use with my o
iPHONE.

Allows me to control the iPHONE through my steering wheel controls.

The Garmin 360 gives me a hands free phone calling ability.

I have the iPHONE mounted on the center counsel using a gooseneck extension and a universal cell phone holder. The 30 pin cable fits perfectly in the bottom of the phone while in the cradel.

Will attach Picts later.

I have an Alpine CDA-9856 in my Jeep Wrangler and I can say that the iPhone is an almost perfect replacement for the iPod in my situation. I have the 30-pin connector and I am able to control the song selection from the stereo. So, repeating songs and changing playlists is no problem.

I get the same Airplane mode question, but, I don't take calls in the Jeep anyway since I can't hear a darn thing with the top down anyway. So, that is really not an issue either.

The only drawback for me is that, in the past, I would leave the iPod locked in the security box where I have the cable running to. I would only take it out when I needed to add new music or I was going to workout. So, now, if I replace the iPod with the phone... I have to keep taking it in/out everywhere I stop. That is a bit of a hassle. So, for the moment, I think I am leaving the iPod in the car.

I have a VAIS Tech module for Toyota / Lexus integration. With the iPhone it works perfectly. The line level out of the iPhone is MUCH louder than on my original iPod Photo! Also, if you ignore that Airplane Mode prompt it goes away on it's own and assumes you meant "No, leave the phone on please."

So basically, plug in and away you go.

Now all I need is for the iPhoneALike iPod video with 120GB drive to come out so all my music will fit! :)

be well

I have an Alpine stereo in my car. I have it wired so I can put the iPod in my glove box. I plugged in my iPohne and it worked fine. Just put it on airplane mode. Bad news is you can't get calls while in airplane mode. I have an old 40GB iPod photo that I use in the car. I had it painted to match the car even. I don't care if it's old. It holds a lot of music and does what I need it to do. I'd rather not use my iPhone as an iPod in the car.

at least you got it to work. I have a dock connector hookup for my iPod in my truck and it doesn't work with my iPhone but it does charge it

I have a dock connector too (in my car). The iPod Nano works but my iPod Video does not. I haven't tried it with my iPhone but doubt if it will work because of the iPod Video issue.

If the screen didn't turn off already, that is.

Here's a hint for ya... Use the physical volume buttons that ARE THERE. The side rocker, under the silence switch will control the volume.

And... if you leave the headphones plugged in, you can double-squeeze the bulge button to skip to the next song (single squeeze for pause/play). Works great to manage songs without looking at iPhone.

The VAIS works with the iPhone? Hrm... What model of Toyota/Lexus do you have? I have a Prius, with no cassette, and no minijack in, so my only iPod connectivity before was an FM transmitter that doesn't work with the iPhone. If one of the iPod links works fine with the iPhone, then I'll go get one installed.

This seems like the solution I am looking for..thanks!!

I have the Harmon Kardon iPlay or iDrive thing, I am not sure the name, but anyway, It has a little LCD screen thats hows you exactly what you would see on your iPod and comes with a remote that works the same way your iPod track does that you can mount anywhere. Originally Apple said that a lot of the iPod accessories doesnt work with the iPhone, however, this one does, and it does a nice job too. Not only do I not have to look at the iPhone, but it charges my iPhone for me, and if i get a phone call, I can hear the ring tone through my car speakers. At this point you just answer your iPhone and when you hang up, it continues playing the music right where it left off. It may just be a quick solution for you. It only cost $99 when i purchased it, and I think it has gone down in price since i purchased it. It doesn't matter what type of radio you have because it uses either Audio (red/white) plugs or an AUX plug.

iPhone in car

My Belkin adapter (pod connector, FM transmitter, charger all in one) for the iPod 'works' for the iPhone, except that iPhone asks to go into Airplane mode.

This means that incoming calls go straight to voicemail, unacceptable.

I like the stereo cable idea out the headphone jack of the iPhone, but only if iPhone doesn't transmit it's interference issue to my radio, and I can still get incoming calls (no Airplane mode).

For a remote, the author should invest in a DLO iDirect, Griffin Remote, etc that plugs in to the iPod Port on the underside of the iPhone. Some of these will also allow you to plug into their undersides the Car Adaper to iPod port.

Most of these come with a little "key-fob-like" remote, which can be double-stick-taped to the steering wheel or other location (so it doesn't get lost).
Just don't put it on your airbag - or it could end up inside your eye in a crash!

For me, since the iPhone doesn't scratch (dropped it 3 times now, once on tile), I just put mine into an empty cupholder or use one of those "cell-cup" foam things that put in the cupholder and look like a piece of gray foam...

I like to keep things fairly simple, my commute is only 5 minutes...

Good idea though if you are driving.
