Went to bed last night after having done a big backup.
Woke up.
Went to the app store and found "banner".
Downloaded it.
Synced ->>>>>>>>>BIG BACKUP started.

I canceled it.

App went to the phone correctly.

playing with banner now.

Apple REALLY needs to fix this.

Edit: a poster said a while back that moving the icons to different screens can cause the BIG BKUP. ?? One thing I noticed is that new apps are being in installed on screen 1. That means technically, even though I did not "move" any apps around. Itunes put it on screen one that could be considered a move to screen 1??

The mystery thickens.

Other then that. This phone plain rocks. Glad I got the 3G instead of waiting.

Edit Part 2:

Just checked 3 movies to be uploaded to the iphone (small tutorial movies not hollywood type movies.)
Hit sync.
Done fast. Only took the normal time it would take to put 3 movies on the iphone.

Maybe there is a reason?

I've been experiencing the same issue with the long backup, but it only seems to occur when installing apps. It appears to me that iTunes is backing up first, then installing the apps.

Is it possible Apple designed it this way so that we have a backup before installing a new app, and therefore, if the new app screws things up for whatever reason, we have a good backup to restore? i.e., a backup from IMMEDIATELY before the app was installed.

If that's the case, it may be a good thing. Once we all get over the frenzy of installing apps, it should settle down.

I agree. Then problem is that adding a 200 meg app should not cause a massive 6 gig / 60 min backup. We need some better delta backup algorithms.

I'm sure this will be high on the list of fixes though.

I've got this problem as well, but it wouldn't fully complete a backup - as at the point it tried to transfer the purchase of "super monkey ball" (purchased directly from the phone) - the transfer would hang, thus forcing me to cancel the transfer (and presumably the whole backup) - hence I am in "backup hell" untill this is sorted.

The only way I can see around this is to ditch SMB; then re-purchase through the computer (once iTunes staff refund me of course)!

Anyone else experiencing this for iPhone purchased apps?

exactly my problem with SMB (purchased on phone, too). I've read elsewhere that if you "buy"/download again via iTunes, and then sync you won't be charged, again.

I don't believe the amount of people buying apps has any bearing at all. We are talking about backups. Not the sync part. Sync is going very quick... once the 20 minute backups are complete.

Not everyone's syncs properly. Mine, and a host of others on this forum, take close to two hours to sync contacts and calendar events (Vista, Outlook2007, 2G iPhone 2.0 with iTunes 7.7).

The syncing isn't the issue for me, by the way you can just change that on the Summary screen ;)
That doesn't do the trick actually.
Just read this guy's solution, which does work perfectly.

I just found that you can change the settings in Preferences, under Syncing:

Uncheck:
"Disable automatic syncing for all IPhones and IPods"

Thank you! It was driving me nuts.

Jessica, I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you but I do it that way and it works fine. :)

I just tried out the app connection and mine has the extremely long back up whether or not anything new is added.

OK, just to clear this up, it IS backing up the whole iPhone, not just apps and contacts, everything, music, video, whatever you have on it. I had about 13 GB left on my HD and after my first big backup it dropped to 8.38 GB, almost the exact 5.5 GB i've used on my phone.

I've got this problem, too. Syncing is fine and take a few seconds or minutes. I know the difference between syncing and backing.

Anytime I sync, my phone backs up, too. Backing up my 8 GB first-gen iPhone with 2.0 software takes about 10 minutes. When you click on sync, it first backs up (takes 10 mins.) then syncs.

Very annoying. No need to back up all my crap everytime I sync. Before 2.0 my iPhone never took this long to backup. In fact, I don't even remember seeing it back up. But I'm sure it did.

Be sure to click the X (cancel) to skip the back up step. I will only allow backup once a day or so depending on what I installed.

I noticed this when I updated my wife's 1st gen iPhone w/ 2.0.
Very annoying.

it happens to me as well

wait...normally as far as backups go...

1st the whole thing is backed up, in the iphone's case...all the songs, apps, etc.

then, let's say you delete just one file or add a file......it doesnt fill up your harddrive with another full backup of the whole device...but just makes a backup with information or aliases leading back to the existing files...and just backing up the new..

that way only what you edit is backed up...everything that has stayed the same since the last one is untouched...therefore not eating up HD computer space and saving time...

well...i thought that would work...but iTunes is backing up my whole phone AGAIN and eating up my hardrive!

....

Holy cow. It takes like 10 minutes to remove 5 apps?

Ugggg... so lonnnnggggggggggggggg.......

Edit: Did I say 10? I meant 30 and still going.....................

Subscribing to the thread to hopefully read about a resolution soon.

In the meantime, I'll try the "click the x during backup" workaround.

(To be clear, my 1st-gen iPhone with 2.0 does a full, several-minute-long BACKUP at the beginning of every sync. This is in addition to the time that a normal sync takes.)

I've had some 1-2 hour backups also. Quite annoying. This never happened before the 2.0 update. Hopefully they fix it soon.

I've been having this same problem with 30+ minute backups. I just hit the x to the right of where it says "backing up iPhone" and it continues on with adding new songs, apps or whatever. I have let it backup 2 times and since then have stopped it every time. I figure that what is being backed up is already on my computer so there is no point in the backup. Its slightly annoying, but its just one click.

After FOUR (4) complete resets and two 3G's...

...I have to say that Apple has REALLY screwed up!!

What a MESS!!

This phone can't even make it through a reset without crashing numerous times.

You guys are all complaining about 20-30 minute back-ups...
...Mine have been taking up to TWO HOURS.

Come on, Apple.
Speak up...fess up...and FIX THIS UP!

Here's what I did last night:

1) Connect iPhone to computer.
2) In iTunes, under Preferences, remove the existing iPhone backup, and delete sync history.
3) Sync iPhone. a) It made a backup. b) It told me some purchased items on the phone weren't in iTunes, which was true, so I said to transfer them over. c) It made another backup. d) And finally completed a normal sync.
4) In the meantime I downloaded some iPhone formatted wallpaper and deleted a couple free apps I didn't want anymore, so a few minutes later I did another sync. This one took a little while, but did NOT start with a backup.
5) Later on in the evening, I decided to do one last sync to see what's up - no backup, and very quick since there wasn't any data changes.
