One thing to try is restart the iphone right before you go to bed. Restarting it will kill any apps running and if you don't launch any when it boots back up then nothing will be running except mail and messages i think.

I shouldn't have to restart or reset my phone before I go to bed. I think thats a bit absurd.

Maybe that's the issue. Fetch connects every 15 minutes regardless if there is new mail or not. Try setting to push or manual.

I thought turning push off and having it fetch would save battery - I read that on a google search.

Also, whats the difference between fetching and push?

Push has the phone get mail when the server tells it to, whereas fetch has the phone tell the server when to get mail.

Fetch uses more power because it connects every 15 minutes, even when there is no mail to get. Push only connects when it needs to.

Manual will use the least power of the three. It will initiate a request to get new mail as soon as you open the mail app.

I use push for gmail and manual for work email.

Okay, I switched push to on for gmail and turned fetch to manual.

I'll see how that will affect my battery. But I still thinking losing that much battery life % overnight isn't because of that.

Why would my usage before bed say 2.5 hrs and 6.5 hrs of standby and when I wake up virtually no change has been shown, 10.5 hours to 14.5 hrs.

Since you leave your WIFI on all night, I think that might be the problem. In iOS 4, Apple introduced persistent wifi, so Wifi does not turn off at all (both good and bad...good if you want to receive notifications instantly...bad for battery life).

My only recommendation is that you remember to turn off wifi every night...it's cumbersome and you really shouldn't have to do it (bad design by apple)...but it's necessary :( It's the only way I've managed to keep my iPhone battery from draining every night at home. The weird thing is that at school, I can leave wifi on all the time and there is no battery drain.

Another option would be to jailbreak your phone and download Depersist wifi (or something like that). This automatically turns off your wifi whenever you sleep the phone. Great battery saver and automates everything for you.

I thought WiFi shuts off when three screen does. Cause when I turn it back on I see the 3G icon that then turns into WiFi Bars.

I leave Wifi on at night and my battery barely drops at all.

Hm....I'm pretty sure it stays on because I know that I can still see my phone on my router at home even when its screen is off.
Can you still see your phone on your home's router even when its screen is off? If you can't, it might be some other problem then.

Yeah my case of battery drain from wifi being on is definitely not experienced by everyone. it's weird because I can leave my phone on wifi all day at my school and there is no battery drop...but then at home, the battery just starts draining like crazy on wifi.

Do you have Google Mail on your iphone? I had the same problem about a year ago and I spent a lot of time on the phone with At&t and Apple. Someone from Apple finally asked if I had Gmail on the phone and suggested that I remove it. I did and the problem stopped immediately. You might try that and see if it helps. I had unlimited data, but it still bugged me that so much data was being used while I slept and my battery was draining so quick. I still have my regular email and my yahoo email on there with no problems. Hope you get it figured out.

Also since I unplugged it from being charged it keeps saying that my usage is the same as my standby time, which isn't true obviously.

For the love of god, just get a new phone! Battery drain like this is not normal, regardless of push, fetch, location, etc.

Last night I went to bed with my iphone 4 on 21% and woke up and it was at around 15-16%. which is normally as bad as it gets. No more than 8%. All this was with wifl on

but I might try and switch wifi off when I go to bed tonight and see if it takes less %.

Switching it off at night you might as well do...although when I do wake up in the night I check NBA scores so thats why I normally keep it on.

WIFI does kill your battery life, I know what I follow NBA games the battery went from 56% to 26% in the same of following a game but at night it does take a good 7% when I'm asleep but I have no idea how much it would go down if I take wifi off...might try that tonight.

although I find most of your replies aggressive towards everyone trying to help you I thought I would add my 2p.

Putting the phone into flight mode is a good idea despite you replying with "That's uncalled for", but this will rule out the phone communicating with the outside world.

Basically we're trying to work out what is draining your battery or if your battery is actually faulty. Since you keep shooting down any ideas other forum members have I don't know what to suggest at all.

I'm 99% sure you were right about the wifi though since mine also will show 3g and then swap to the wifi icon when unlocking it, although your wifi is likely to be in use throughout the night if you have other apps accessing the net without you knowing.

My advice. Restart the phone. don't run anything before you goto sleep. turn on flight mode and leave it. then check again in the morning. If you've still lost more than 10% battery speak to your carrier about replacing it.

For reference mine uses 7-10% in standby overnight without killing all apps and it's a month old and I usually leave facebook, mail, facebook chat, etc running all the time with push

Well, I'm going to return/exchange today.

Last night I went to bed at 87% woke up (only 7 hrs later) at 7%.

Somethings ****ed up.

You could... you know... charge it...

I find when my battery is getting low charging it usually solves the problem.

Yeah, something is wrong with the battery. I had charged my phone over Saturday night-Sunday morning. Had 100% charge. I downloaded about 5 or 6 apps, took a couple of calls, checked some emails and responded to them. Went to bed and woke up this morning at 5am to go to the gym and my phone was at 71%. I'm at 65% now after listening to 45 minutes of music.
