To power and charge an iPhone on your bike, simply buy an external battery pack, like the Anker ones, and keep it in your saddle pack. Then run a lightning cable along the bike frame, held in place with cable ties.

That is a possibility. I first need to determine what my rate of battery use is while riding, and I'm not going to worry about figuring that out until I get an iPhone 5S.

I have this one - http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005K7192G/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1378109170&sr=8-2&pi=SL75

Starting with my iPhone fully charged, I can run my iPhone most of the day (certainly longer than I can cycle for). But more larger capacity ones are available.

Many of the bike accessory manufacturers make various solutions, from battery packs you attach to the handlebars to chargers that are powered from the wheel turning. But they are all expensive and clunky, I have not seen a better solution than the recharagble battery I have in my tiny saddle pack.

OK. Thanks for that link. I saved it in my wish list.

I have 2 from IOGEAR. This is the latest one I bought, and the one I use most now:

Sign up for their mailing list, as I got both of mine on sale. The one in the link was $21.26 shipped.

I bought this one for $19.99 in 2010 http://www.iogear.com/product/GMP1001B/

I use the newer one more often as I can plug my dock cable in directly rather than use adapters. But the older one got me out of jams when I was stuck in work locations and my battery was no good (pre-iPhone).

I honestly have not had to use it on a ride yet but I carry it on long rides just in case. It did charge my phone from 20-30% to full a few times with no problem when I was housesitting earlier this year.

Some day I'll have to do a test while using MotionX GPS

Also someone in a local club just mentioned a Topeak mount - anyone try that one? He has it mounted on his stem and feels it would be protected fairly well in case of a crash (mountain bike)
