This is good news if it pans out. It means Wind Mobile and Mobilcity would both be able to carry the iPhone 4 and future iPhone's in Canada. That or just take an unlocked iPhone over to those providers. Rogers, Bell, and Telus would cry.

Unless Apple can get out of the exclusivity agreement with AT&T, they're not going to be able to release their phone to other carriers without inviting a huge lawsuit.

I read another post which talks about the AT&T-Apple relationship. In one word, it's a soap opera. In any case, Steve Jobs wanted to switch to someone like Verizon but he dropped the idea after learning that he would have to redesign the whole iPhone in order to accommodate the CDMA chip.

However, I can tell you that it's in Apple's best interests to open itself up to other carriers. However, as long as the exclusivity contract is in force, that's not happening.

It depends on the wording of the contract if Apple gave AT&T exclusive rights to carry the GSM iPhone then Verizon can carry it.

i just took a job in wyoming.
neither att nor tmobile has coverage in the entire state.
it's verizon all the way there.
looks like i have to unlock my phones and hope they go verizon.
well that's obviously not true, I was just in Yellowstone and had full 3G coverage throughout most of the park

Why doesn't apple just create a mobile service (iMobile) and just use everyone's network.

So, make iphone available on all networks. Apple contracts with the carriers to use their network. Then when you buy an iPhone you contract with Apple directly.

Just like how BoostMobile sells their services but uses Sprints network in the back.

http://www.boostmobile.com/

Because you're at the mercy of multiple carriers then and their signal. Plus, when you operate an MVNO you get the limited coverage the carriers provide to them.

Don't people already use the iPhone on T-Mobile (meaning the phone can run on their network as it is right now - it doesn't need a new chip)?

Yes... only thing that sucks about it is the lack of 3G :( Maybe T-Mobile can change their frequencies to match that of the iPhones to enable the faster speeds?

If Steve's still at the helm in 2015ish, he won't have much of a choice.

What is it with everyone assuming Steve is going to leave apple? This is like the Nth or so mention of that. Do people really think that the Board is going to oust him again or that he's just going to up and leave?

Sure he's 55 years old But there are at least 20 or More CEO's who are 70-80. I didn't mean to Veer off topic but i'm noticing this trend alot on Mac rumors.

Lets see. I think TMO has a winner with the Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant). Yeah, it lacks iOS4, but with Android 2.1 its still quite nice and the 4" SAMOLED display is something iPhone4 can't touch.

Verizon turned down something apple didn't have a prototype for. Can't say I blame them. .

Not just no prototype, Apple wouldn't have shown it to them if they had one. It was "buy this sight unseen". Plus Apple wanted to do what Google just tried to do with Nexus One ; sell it unsubsidized. That was a flop for Apple too. The zealot momentum was high enough it wasn't a product killing misstep so it survived. Again Verizon would have insisted it wasn't going to work and Apple would have insisted they had better insight into phone market (not). Finally, they are both logo driven. Apple would have a cow over the Verizon appearing on the case. That would have been another death match.

In the long term, Verizon has a different philosophy about phones than Apple had or still has.

I don't think Apple has it in for Verizon because they wouldn't buy something sight unseen. Jobs and Apple know they wouldn't do that for practically nobody themselves.

The bigger issue is that Apple planned to get into the worldwide market. If can get iPhone growth by simply releasing the same phone into 10-12 more countries each year you can build one of the same thing and ship it anywhere. The completely software keyboard is one factor that enables that.
When that country over country growth sputters then they'd loop back to verizon. Would the iPad on fire they don't even need growth as much.

Apple also didn't want to be the dominate player in the market either (in terms of units) or revenue. If they can cut out a profitable 10-20% of the cellphone market they'll be happy. So they don't have to try to squeeze their competitors out of every single service provider.

The best chance US consumers have is that the FCC has rules about open 700MHz frequencies that ATT and Verizon will be using for LTE. Google helped get language in so that the headsets are suppose to open. The notion that headsets only work on one network will get a big frown from the FCC and there a stick they can use about it now ( as long as it doesn't go back to being a non regulating body like the previous administration wanted it to be. )

Yes to T-Mobile

I have a RAZR and have great reception and voice quality with T-Mobile in a cement and brick medical building in the Boston Area. My co-workers get little or no At&T signal so the Iphone is not an option for me right now. If the Iphone comes to T-Mobile I'll be one of the first folks in line to get it.

Yes... only thing that sucks about it is the lack of 3G :( Maybe T-Mobile can change their frequencies to match that of the iPhones to enable the faster speeds?

T-mobile isn't changing their frequencies, breaking all the 3G phones they already sold, just for the iPhone.

What is it with everyone assuming Steve is going to leave apple?

He's been ill, and you never know what can happen. I don't personally think he'd leave voluntarily, nor do I think he'll be dying anytime soon. But I don't know for sure, as my crystal ball wasn't approved due to private api use. :p

Let me clear up this rumor

This is a misleading rumor. The truth behind this rumor is Tmobile is getting the iphone on their network this quarter as soon as the The Dev Team releases the unlock. They are about 80% of the way there.

What is it with everyone assuming Steve is going to leave apple? This is like the Nth or so mention of that. Do people really think that the Board is going to oust him again or that he's just going to up and leave?

People can die at any time. He is still a human being. Throw on top he has already had cancer twice and is around because someone else dying and donating body parts is a primary reason he is still upright and moving ...... it isn't like he is some magical being.

Yeah sure it is a flunky board who aren't going to do much. However, if Jobs put the stock into the crapper, he would get tossed. Apple went on upswing in stock a couple of years because he got tossed the last time too.

I don't think he will get bored and go work on something else, but sometimes stuff happens and not all factors are in Jobs control.

I'm not a cell phone expert, but couldn't Apple just make a minor receiver change to the iPhone and then it would work for T-Mobile?

The other possibility is that Apple starts selling the phone factory unlocked like in europe.

But The Iphone Is Coming To Verizon!!!

Hahahahahahaha!
This is beyond funny. After what seven mythical unicorn rumors spread by analysts to bolster V stock that the iPhone was just around the corner for verizon woooops turn out that was all bs like I've said each time that rumor popped up. Now after realizing no one is buying the V myth anymore they are moving on to tmobile unicorn myths. Wheee this game is fun! However i will say tmobile is a hell of a lot more believable than verizon at least the cellular tech is the same with the iPhone and tmobiles network. Just a different frequency. But at least it's compatible. This rumor isn't nearly as hillarious as the verizon unicorn myth was. So if your a tmobile users here is to hoping this unicorn has legs :)

I'm going to say this may have been a test of Apple's to see if T-Mobile can hold a secret.

I can say that with the other 20% certainty of the anonymous source, Apple will not be going to T-Mobile after this news reel
