For anyone curious, running the same test on my Cingula Treo 650 (with EDGE) gets the following on this test (broadbandreports.com/mspeed test with 600kb file..... my Treo said it ran out of memory when I tried to test with the 1MB file):

123kbit/sec
2.244s latency
41.214s d/l time

+1 Informative.

I would think we should expect speeds on par with this from the iPhone, then.

Am I the only one catching this?

I can't believe no one caught this ---

To perform a speed test on Broadbandreports, you need either Java or Flash enabled browser. Doesn't this pretty much confirm Flash is enabled on the phone? (Steve Jobs mentioned he didn't think Java would be enabled during an interview I read somewhere).

:)

Only 1.2 mbps on wifi? I get that with EVDO on my Moto Q. Let's hope that was due to a weak signal.

The mobile broadbandreports doesn't require flash or javascript.

I wonder whether iPhone would allow you to print, say, webpages onto wirelessly shared printers on the local network. I think that might be a feature that is both cool and useful, plus it is very easy to implement.

You don't; When i go to broadbandreports.com/mspeed with Blazer (the Treo's browser), it works fine, and it doesn't support Java or Flash. It only says it needs a mobile browser that supports JavaScript I think.

Maybe, although if it's true AT&T is optimizing EDGE performance, there could be improvements.

Also, I suspect the iPhone might perform better anyway. My Treo 650 seems to get stuck up a lot, so you'll see EDGE go very fast for a while (like maybe the first 200k will come down pretty quickly, and then the Treo seems to get hung up and pause for a number of seconds before more downloads).

I suspect at least that the iPhone might perform better even though it is also only an "EDGE" device.

The improvements are only being made in towers with weak performance (around 40kbps) so that all towers will be able to support download speeds of at least 80kbps.

someone should put some research into the fanatacism for a device that goes to such great lengths as to track it's somewhat anonymous appearances on the interweb

Still faster than dial-up... I used to have 64kb ISDN... and I thought that was fast...

mobile browsers have special strings in UA for a reason, unless apple is hoping iphone "safari" behaves like a computer browser, it would be counter productive to fake its UA like a computer browser.

So what? It was over wifi. The real test is how ATular's (AT&T + Cingular)'s network performs. You could get a zillion KBPS over wifi.

Er, those are pretty disappointing speeds. EDGE is horrifically slow. I'll consider an iPhone when it has 3G and MMS.

get out the big shovels

that is fast enought to fill up 4 or 8 gig quickly. amazing. this phone (though i won't every bother much about mobiles) is quite a feat - cannot wait till it is unwilded

I dunno... it would be ok for a few emails and a bit of web browsing.

Having said that, I hate any machine on which I don't have my firefox on. I'm addicted to adblock and a custom hosts file :D

My oh my... I can't wait until the end of June. At last the vast majority of people on this planet will no longer have to endure the useless (like this thread here) postings like "Oh my god! Somebody is using an iphone to browse the net!". Finally this hype will come to an end and be replaced by even worse topics like "My iphone is downloading at xyz kb on the AT&T network. Is this normal?" We'll be delighted to see "Post your download speed here" threads. Man, I really can't wait. :p WWDC is starting on Monday and MacRumors is full of iphone crap. I wonder how long Steve will resist the urge to pull an iphone out of his blue jeans to show us something really cool.

Apple has well and truly lost its focus. Bring back the old days please. I need cool Mac Hardware and a cool OS. Not something I can use to waste my time with while waiting for public transport. :D

KHTML Like Kevin...

Go to the mobile tests for today and search the page for iPhone, you will get this

969 0.608s (1024k) myvzw.com Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Kevin) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3

although its probably fake as I have never heard of KHTML like Kevin, its still there to debate.

Go although its probably fake as I have never heard of KHTML like Kevin, its still there to debate.

someone was just screwing around with the "kevin" part.
I think it should have read "gecko" as in a string like this:

16:26 (Apple IP #1) "Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; PPC like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A001a Safari/419.3"

Wow, I wonder it they might also have tested making a phone call?

hardly a groundbreaking front age item. I imagine next we'll get a age 1 item saying that the iPhone will indeed be shipped in a box, require electricity to charge the battery.

:)

There was extremely high latency listed on apple's test. Either broadbandreports connected them to a crappy server or Apple was having slow network that day.

I've heard from friends at Apple (few miles from my house) that they are having growing pains regarding their internet connection at the office. It's funny up here in Silicon valley it can be a real pain to get a good connection sometimes. Especially in the area of Apple's campus, I can see them having a very difficult time upgrading their internet.

not to mention company wide wifi access with 12,000 employees

Nice forensics, guys.

I want print-to-pdf so I can save stuff to transfer later...

Er, this has nothing to do with EDGE, it is a WIFI connection.
:apple: has been 'busy' lately in the media and in the meantime ... I've lost track of what is 'real' and what is 'rumor'. Is ZFS real... SUN said it, but that's enough for SJ to do a reversal on them. Though he is probably so busy tracking down who leaked the att iPhone training manual
ZFS is for real. OS X 10.5 is built based on it, and to restart the filing system from scratch would be impractical. It would be a much more time-consuming venture than simply swapping a video processor.

You're right about the AT&T leak - SJ is sure to let them know about his displeasure, although I don't know what he can do about that, because he's pretty much locked Apple in with AT&T for the next 5 years.
