about 190Kb/s at 1:00 in the morning
about 150Kb/s at 4:00 is in the afternoon

both speeds are very usable!

Here's an idea; discontinue 4 Gig model and offer 3G

For what it's worth, on my BlackBerry 8700c with AT&T EDGE, I get 30 kbps in the Atlanta area.

Here's an idea:
Since the 4 Gig model sold so poorly, why not sell the 8 gig for $499, discontinue the 4 Gig and then sell the same 8 gig model w/ 3G for those who actually live in Metro city areas for $599. Obviously, because I live in the town where AT&T Wireless is based, I know the 3G coverage is arguably the best here on the network. :p

I would be lined up at an Apple Store the next day (I kid you not!).

I tried a few times, but best speed was:

EDGE - 219 kbps in Long Beach, CA

That's a great little page, thanks for the url :)

if these test numbers are actually accurate, it looks like the iphone did EDGE a favor! EDGE data rates averaged 70-100kbps down, and some really pathetic numbers for the upload, when it was originally deployed. Glad they dumped some money into the network.

Basically, on par with CDMA 1xRTT

Here in Chicago, on the edge network, minimum was 145, and max was 230,

using dslreports/mspeed the speed test was 68kbit/sec, to 130 kbit/sec

using my treo 755p on sprints network 120kbits/sec to as high as 600 kbits/sec

I'm somehow pulling off 156 in the middle of nowhere I'm between Arizona and California there's nothing here but sand. But its very usable so sweet!!!

164 kbps here at the edge of the Phoenix metro area (Peoria)

1471 kbps WiFi though!

Around 190kbps in Cypress, TX (Northwest Houston). Not to bad, coming from a 3g carrier in the UK, I expected EDGE to feel very slow, but I am pleasantly surprised by how it is working out so far.

From Manhattan Beach, CA (LA)

A whopping 18, yes 18 from Manhattan Beach! (Second try got me up to 65.)

I knew it was crap, but wow! (Sadly, wifi is only 510!) Only 2 bars... but that is the best I ever get here!

Time to gripe with AT&T again on service levels. Bad enough that phone calls drop constantly. Ironically, they have the best service in the area.

If I stand outside in the middle of the street, I can pull off 110 with 3 bars.

Shame AT&T doesn't put in more picocells in high density areas.

103.7 Kbps on edge in lake charles, Louisiana in the middle of a cement building. Not bad, I guess

I tested my iPhone connection at

http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed

and got from 150-170 kbit/sec on a 200K and 600K file. On my laptop, using the Verizon broadband access card, I get 600-800kbit/sec on the 600K and 1MB files.

What do you get?

EDIT: Here is another test

http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html

I did 155kbps on the iPhone, and 210kbps on the Verizon card. This one seems more accurate, as my Verizon card connects at 230kbps according to the little balloon in Windows XP.

I just saw this thread after I opened up a new one. I tried iphonenetworktest.com but am getting very inconsistent results, from 80-140kbps in several consecutive attempts. The site I posted in the other thread:

http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html

seems to give more consistent results from test to test.
