Exchange

This is kind of a stupid question.

I work for a small company and we use hosted exchange as opposed in hosting it in house. Will i be able to use exchange on the iphone or do you have to have some sort of enterprise deal with apple/corporate plan with ATT to use the exchange on the iphone?

AFAIK as long as your Exchange provider has activated the mobile services setting in the user account, you should be able to connect your mobile devices to your mailbox.

So, this PUSH e-mail support, is it going to be some exchange-only BS, or are they also going to support IMAP PUSH/IDLE, like on GMail?

They can't do it that way. The way that rim does it now is charge a monthy fee because they have to constantly grab email from the original company, pull it to their servers, and push it to your device. PUSH support isn't something mail providers have and is really only available with exchange/rim's setup.

MS licensed ActiveSync and Exchange support to iPhone? Is it just me, or did they just essentially withdraw from the mobile market?

Well, they never made any hardware, all they do is license their software/server integration to phone makers. For example, they license Windows Mobile software to hardware maker Palm.

Their deal with Apple is not really all that different. They're licensing some of their software.

In theory, it should work that way. So long as there's not anything else that has to be installed on the exchange server.

Yeah, Exchange 2003 comes with the ActiveSync stuff installed by default. It actually defaults to turning the mobile connection to enabled. I will be installing Exchange 2007 soon so I will be able to check to see if the settings are basically the same. Too bad I won't be able to use it though, that would have been sweet.

Can we expect Apple Mail, iCal, and Address Book to gain ActiveSync support to?

Pretty sure it doesn't work the same way for desktops. I don't think Apple could give MAPI Exchange support in Mail, iCal, and Address Book with out paying Micorsoft tons of money. Why? In a word: Office. Plus Apple would have to pay for every implementation of it (assuming ActiveSync would work). Just like they are gonna have to do now.

Plus I found something interesting on Wiki, not sure if Apple is going to actively support ActiveSync on the iPhone:
Microsoft offers email support for USD $99 per request, as well as telephone support for USD $259 per request.

One device

This is great news for iPhoniPhiles everywhere. The day when we'll all be able to use one mobile device for work and play just got a little nearer.

Tasks / Notes

I would love to know the answer to this, as well. I think it is doubtful that we will get it as part of 2.0 since there is no existing cooresponding app made to handle tasks. I am also very interested in Notes synchronization with Exchange. I use this extensively to keep up with little job details and could really stand to have it again. MS chose to leave notes off of the Smartphone platform and a few developers stepped in and filled the void with a product that would sync with Outlook. Even if we don't get Exchange sync of tasks and notes, maybe we can get Oulook sync from a third party.

?

Two big things I hope Apple will fix but it doesn't look like they are forthcoming in the June update:
1) Notes sync on the PC. ActiveSync between Exchange and iPhone notes would be incredible, but I'd settle even for cord-based sync like you can already do on the mac.
2) Tasks - I sure hope Apple will include this oddly missing feature on the iPhone, but it hasn't been mentioned in any of their official communications. I wonder how many iPhone SDK downloaders are working on task applications right now??

Maybe Apple is hoping a 3rd party like Motorola's Good will develop over the air Sync for iPhone tasks/notes? Good is Great on the Palm platform, but the iPhone interface is so spectacular I sure wish Apple would just release notes/tasks that synced with Exchange so we don't have to buy 3rd party solutions.

So how is this Push Email going to work? WIll it only work with Exchange Server, or are is Apple going to Run servers like RIM that monitor our email inboxes and push the email to us?

Well if you want your iPhone to sync with an Apple server you should check out Kerio Mail server www.kerio.com
