These are my top 10 (i.e., *my* wishes - many will probably never happen due to not being in the interest of Apple):
1) Open hardware & software privacy audit. Provably ruling out any "computer within a computer" (Intel ME style) that would share data on request of governments or anyone else.
2) Removing software restrictions at *my* own discretion:
Ability to use MacOS, like the MacBook Neo does
Ability to use any and all third-party apps and app-stores without nag screens
Ability to use third-party OSs, such as potentially adapted versions of Windows/Linux/Android on ARM
3) Working personal hotspot without having to constantly reactivate it
4) Properly dimming the always-on display, at night, by default, in all conditions, unless asked not to
5) 3CMOS prism main camera, moving away from insensitive Bayer-array sensors. Apple has held patents on this for many years, just choses to drag it out for as long as possible.
6) Overall smoother form factor to sit flat on surfaces in either orientation (no plateau and/or bumps, e.g., using a continuous rounded-wedge design).
Also no notch, cutout, chin, bezels, or other BS. Three easy ways of solving this are:
- Under-screen camera, just like Oppo does it since years
- Miniaturizing and placing the camera in the top speaker slot, as previously done for the light sensor.
- A periscope containing the front camera that elegantly slides out on the few occasions that it is needed. It could slide out sideways opposite the backside cameras. Yes, it is a mechanical part - but that horse will leave the barn with the release of the fold models and corresponding hinges.
7) Additional hardware support for multimedia codecs:
Hardware support for H.266 encoding and decoding. Yes, it is a hen-and-egg problem with content -but we have to start somewhere. And it is long overdue.
Hardware support for AV2 encoding and decoding
8) More photo/video control on *all* cameras without having to resort to third-party apps:
- 8K video support
- RAW support
- Exposure/aperture control
9) Refinement of existing hardware features:
Higher-density battery, Tandem OLED display, higher-quality audio DAC, full eSIM and mmWave support in all regions
10) Additional hardware features:
- Under-screen or sideways fingerprint sensor, for use as an alternative or additional authentication method, at my own discretion
- Backside display for higher-quality selfies using the main camera + information display when sitting face-down
- Storage upgradability via a card
- Second USB port
EDIT:
Bonus: Apple-made MagSafe utilities such as a projector, a teleconverter, an infrared camera, and a large-capacity storage add-on. While no base features, these are highly useful to different target groups, and there is good business in supplying them first-party.
