I haven't even updated my iphone to 2.01 yet and I just started to have those problems with my mail. Safari is still good. A coworker said that I should update my phone. So apparently he isn't having problems with the current update.

Not sure about the phone, but as for my iPod Touch, everything worked well except for the DNS issue with wifi until I updated to 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2 - now I hate my iPod. Nothing works except wifi

edit- fixed spelling errors

For the app store on the phone there is no longer a "download all updates" or whatever the heck it was in the update area. Looks like you need to choose to update each separately now.

Battery life improved?

After 2hrs of usage time, i still have a full battery meter today after the 2.0.2 update. Before this i would be on 70-80% full and almost empty by the end of the day with maybe 4 hours usage time.

On the phone you could send a message as long as you want and it only shows as one message. I'd be pretty annoyed if I found out I was sending 3 messages when there is no warning of this on the phone

Sorry to be the barer of annoyance, but I can confirm.

I can type & send what appears one long SMS, but non-iPhone recipients receive the same message broken up (in some cases) over several individual SMSes.

The 160 character limit for SMSing is nothing new... so I don't think anyone should be surprised if they end up sending 2 or 3 at once. Perhaps there should be an option in settings, but I personally don't think that kind of notification is necessary.

You sure about that? I was aware that even though I sent one really long message it would be received by the recipient as more than one. I didn't think that also meant I was sending more than one message.

Wow, I can't even update... says the download is corrupted! First time this has ever happened to me. I've tried 3 times now and keep getting this message: (see screen shot)

attachment.php

May I suggest deleting the ipsw file on your computer? It's located in the ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/ folder.

That's the thing, it's not even there. Once I get that error message, it automatically deletes the download. And every time I try to redownload I get the same message. And my download is pretty fast since I have a highspeed connection, so it's not timing out or anything...

Anyone have a link to the firmware download from the Apple site so I can try and manually do this?

So here's where I'm at now, I've downloaded the firmware update directly from the link supplied by nikiski above. It downloaded fine and I placed it in the proper folder. Then I clicked "Update" in iTunes and it found the update and started to extract it... then stopped and presented me with the same exact message! How the hell is this happening!?! I've updated the first gen iPhone which I bought on day one and now this iPhone 3G with every update that was available with no issues ever (and have never jailbroken or anything) and now this one stupid update, no matter how I try, is corrupted!

I can't believe I am the only one having this problem... If anybody can provide further help or advice it will be greatly appreciated!

whining

just whining because it is taking over 1.5 hours to do the dang first backup to be able to do the upgrade... why is this soooo slow??? Is it because I'm using a USB hub to connect my iPhone?

ETA: P.S. - yes i deleted all the old backups in iTunes before i started (hoping that would speed this up)

Sorry to rain on your parade, but this is wishful thinking. If a software update is going to fix the problem, then the hardware is not the problem. When Steve Jobs said 2% of the phones were affected, he meant that 2% of the owners are affected, due to the city and 3G environment in which they reside. 100% of the phones contain the problem, but it only manifests itself 2% of the time.

Was it ever confirmed or backed up at all that Steve Jobs office really sent that message about the 2%?

I'm ready to chuck my Touch out the window or go to firmware 1.5

Not a bad view, however with Apple releasing this device in so many country's at once, and seeing how apple does not say what there updates are and labels them as "Bug Fixes" do you really think they have control or know the serial number range of hardware problem devices ? Also if they did somehow release the serial number range, and the fact that in articles first posted about the company that's making these devices has or had poor quality control procedures, can you imagine the stampede at the Apple and AT&T stores to swap out iphones?

Since switching to Apple more than a year ago, it seems they stay in the land of "Denial" until it escalates so high, then they say, gee think we should fix this ?

Yes, it would be easy to keep track of serial number ranges in any given shipment. Companies can tack where that range was shipped to etc. So if this is a hardware problem it can be tracked to individual phones serial numbers. They may not know all affected serial numbers yet, but this wouldn't be hard to figure out eventually.

Yeah that's correct. There is (and always has been) a 160 character limit on SMS messages (hence "Short Messaging Service').
A lot of phones have a counter to show how many characters remain in the message you are typing. The iPhone however, just makes "split" messages appear as one long one, although they are technically sent seperately (and use up more of your message allowance).

Funny, I almost always use Wifi so I've never even noticed if I have 3G reception or not.

However, at the moment I can't connect to my Wifi network (hopefully a problem with the router not the iPhone!) so I've noticed it's always on Edge. Turned 3G off and on again, and it comes up with 3G, but only 1 bar. Looks like I might be part of that "2%".

Indeed, most phones give you a warning if the message is long enough to cost you double (or more). That's quite an oversight on the SMS functionality of the iPhone.

I updated last night and I've found that my 3G reception is the same (pretty good) but, pleasingly, my EDGE reception is more stable. This is important for me at my desk at work where I'm in a bit of a blackspot.

Sorry Randy, but you are not correct in that statement. There are a certain percentage of phones that in deed are defective. How do I know, because I had one! Since replacing my phone, all my problems at home went away with the 3G reception. If I put my sim card back in my old phone with the problem, it immediately comes back. So replacing the hardware CAN fix this problem, but I doubt a software update will!

Major Problems in DC

I'm in Mclean, Va and having the same issues.

Another DC (near the WH) user here. With 4 bars of 3G service, I have not been able to get my email to download from my non .mac accounts since 8:49am. "Reebooting" my phone several times made no difference at all. I just turned off 3G service, and volia, all my mail downloaded.

Either there are MAJOR 3G network issues in DC and/or the "bug fixes" in the update created new bugs.

I hate to say it, but good thing I have a company issued BlackBerry as a backup device!

I have a small issue since I updated to 2.0.2:

In Google Maps, when I'm already at a considerable high zoom level, the following happens:

When I pinch the map to zoom in/out, instead of zooming, the map moves into the direction of one of my fingers. As soon as I lift both fingers off the screen, the map is correctly zoomed though.

I use Maps regularily and I NEVER had this problem before, and I swear I use Maps the very same way as I always did. It's not that it doesn't recognize my both fingers because it actually does zoom in or out, it's just that instead of animating the zoom, it moves the map in the direction of one of my fingers. The touch screen behaves just fine otherwise.

Has anybody experienced the same issue?

Battery Life: Any Difference?

Hi all,

After updating to 2.0.2, I was hopeful for battery life improvements in my 1st Gen iPhone. Not sure yet. Tried out Simplify and Pandora today at work. Of course, those both hit the battery pretty hard. Used for about and hour or two this morning, and battery meter already indicates approximately 50% used :( 4 bars on EDGE network. I'm guessing if I went another hour like that, I'd be hitting the low battery warning pop up.

Does that seem pretty typical to those of you who are using either of these streaming music apps on their iPhones?

Oh yes, so far the phone seems a little more stable. I'm still not certain of any changes, positive or negative, in reception.

I've been using the 2.0.2 update since yesterday and have had no problems, but I don't notice anything different either. My phone has been working okay since I got it.

This has been the best update for me so far. No issues and the backup was BY FAR the quickest one yet. I am quite pleased as I'm on my third iPhone. I think the reasons for the two previous exchanges were due to the firmware. Hopefully all will remain well.

Reception Degradation

Got my iPhone loaded with 2.0 and it worked beautifully.

2.0.1 made it worse. Couldn't really understand the person on the other line. Sometimes it wouldn't make calls at all.

2.0.2 made it even worse. Can't make out anything. Not even trying to make any calls.

I live in Vancouver, Canada. On Rogers. These problems are under 3G- on EDGE calls seem to be fine.

Updating took me a while (to 2.0.2). I kept getting an error 19 message.

I think Apple really took too much on at once with the iPhone 3G. Im guessing I could probably talk for quite a few of you on here and say that you would be happy if Apple never bothered about Exchange or the App Store this time round and just firmly concentrated on making a solid 1.1.4 style iPhone with 3G data access and GPS? That for me personally, would be by far the most awesome mobile phone ever. :)
