A flip-style makes less sense as it's less useful. Some people will continue to prefer slab phones.

It's smaller in the pocket. That's all I want.

After playing with a Motorola Razr at the Spectrum store, I almost ditched my iPhone for it. Reviews didn't make it look very reliable, though.

I’d buy an unfolding iPhone Mini if its total folded thickness were no thicker than the current Pro phones minus a camera bump.
Look at the designs basically the external screen is gonna be in the range of looking like a mini. It’s not big compared to like a pro which some people prefer. Also, the camera bump is never going away with any phone anytime soon, although it would be nice.

Why is there no market for a non-foldable large phone? Is still own the Mi Max 3 from Xiaomi which has a display larger than any non-foldable phone that came after it. And that for about $300. Now people spend $2,000 for a foldable phone, but there is not an affordable large phone any more.

It is not so much about the diagonal, but the width. My phone is much wider than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. All I want is a new phone that is at least as wide as my old one without costing me a kidney.

Well, I wish Apple good luck in whatever they do. I am not going to be there customer for a folding phone. I just wish they would get dictation in Safari fixed so that it was reliable and stopped rewriting what I write. I don’t need screen size as much as I need better data entry.

yes, just buy a iPad mini I guess. why the need to fold a phone.

When they launch their foldable, they should bite the bullet and launch the consumer and prosumer models at the same time.

Apple Fold (5.5-inch to 7.8-inch)

Apple Fold Ultra/Pro (sil-car battery, improved chip, better cameras, larger size)

Why shouldn't they be called "iPhone"? Because closed it's an iPhone, and open it's an iPad.
It will be called “iBook”.

I don't personally see myself getting on this train. I don't need or want to carry more screen with me. Might be interesting a flip-style foldable, though.
This is exactly where I am on this. I don’t need anything bigger/thicker/heavier to carry around. Already, I am avoiding the iPhone Pro and Pro Max. A rugged iPhone Flip with great battery life would get my interest, though.

Meanwhile, Counterpoint envisions foldables exceeding 60 percent of the smartphone market. That’s not going to happen at $2,000-plus a pop. Prices will have to come down dramatically with no sacrifice to durability.

Someone asked in another thread if anyone on MR gets excited for anything…yeah, this.

This device might be worth the pilgrimage to The Cube in NYC for launch day. We’ll have to see during the announcement event.

Again, who is asking for this device. The Air was supposedly “asked for” and look how that’s gone.
Boo this person.

Apple should make a 5.7-inch iPhone in my opinion. Not under any marketing sub-name (not “mini”), just “iPhone” in three sizes, and “iPhone Ultra” with silicon carbon battery in the same three sizes. This gives people two choices in that sensible smaller size. Get rid of the “e” model. And give the iPhone Air (premium device) silicon carbon and offer it as 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch (not 6.5-inch), the same sizes as the two larger iPhone sizes.

But a flip-style phone is much more pocketable and not everyone requires high levels of productivity in a phone. So you’re really talking about your own needs and interests. But, yes, many people will stick with slab phones - especially if that form factor remains the least expensive.

Some people are saying this will flop if priced at $2400 and they cite the vision pro high price as an example. But I disagree. The vision pro is a completely niche product with limited use cases. People will hand over $2400 for a foldable iPhone. I am certain of it. I am not one of those people, but I suspect many will.

Um, I am pretty sure that the book format was cemented years ago. I had a Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 back in 2021, and that was a third generation device. I like Apple products better than the competition usually, but do get irritated with Apple friendly journalists over selling Apple’s influence. Samsung has been the most innovative company in phones for years in my opinion. They drove large screen sizes. They drove pen based input into tablets. They usually are the leader in implementing advanced camera components. I still prefer Apple’s devices (and mainly OS) but Apple is late to the folding party, so they had better knock it out of the park if they want to cement anything.

I want a reliable OS and thoroughly tested apps, how about that?

Won't buy any phone where the screen gets damaged by dust and fingernails.
What are you doing with your phone to the point where you are worried about the screen being damaged by fingernails? I've owned 9 foldables and 2 flips, and I've never had so much as a hairline scratch on any of the displays, and I even remove the screen protector on the inner display on day one. Also, I've never had any damage due to dust either. I suppose some might work in dusty environments, but the foldables of today are fairly dust resistant.

I guess I’ll embrace my “boomer” or “millennial” status and continue enjoying my good old slab-style phones. Now get off my lawn.
+1, and I preferred bar phones over flip phones in the dumb phone days so I was at least consistent lol
