I know the term "under display" sounds sexy... but it just means there's something covering the camera.

I don't see how anything in front of the lens of a camera can compete with an unobstructed lens.

But I guess we'll find out.

😎
Imagine a pinhole that's completely undetectable and covered with active imagining most all of the time BUT that transiently becomes transparent only during metering and exposure (i.e., for a second or two during exposure), then immediately returning to hidden. I'd take that in a second -- same for a similar approach to the Dynamic Island.

That's been tried, but found to not increase image quality by much. The display layers above the camera lens still need to be there, even if they're not illuminated during a shot, and it's those layers that still reduce incoming light significantly even when the display area is turned off briefly. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series with UDC, and the ZTE Axon 20 and 40 Ultra use this method, along with a lower pixel density in the display area above the camera lens to allow more light through, along with image processing, and the result apparently still isn't good enough for Apple. Also, this area of the display is visibly different from the rest of the display, looking a little smudgy.

FOUR CAMERAS!!! Will the rear have three each?! lol this is insane. The compromises will be significant I think, so while it will be cool to own and show off I think I’ll stick with pro max line and see how things unfold (pun intended)…

There are so many options as far as cameras are concerned, they probably have a zillion prototypes in the lab…outside cameras with punch-hole inside with punch one outside with punch one outside with Under display etc etc…

I have faith with all these options, that Apple has the expertise to choose the correct option…

But yeah I can see me being day one on iPhold but then just return it before 14 days lol

…huge piece is no more Face ID (what camera would get it?? lol), so Touch ID back after saying how much more secure faceID is (at least I think Apple publicly said this)….hmm I always felt Touch ID was pretty secure and someways better (faster to unlock from pocket for example)…
I hate Touch ID. If your fingers were wet (ie working out, just out of the shower, in the rain, at a pool...) it wouldn't work. Face ID no problem! I would not give up Face ID for a folding phone. I'll wait until they can include the proper cameras to implement on a fold-phone. Maybe for a tablet, something not my main device. Additionally, I really dislike Touch ID implementation on narrow buttons such as are present on phones. I would make the concession for a folding tablet, but not for my main phone.

THAT would be very cool tech. Right now the problem is with the multiple layers of substrates between the OLED layer and the surface of the screen. I think there are at least 5 layers? Some of which refract light in such as way that will definitely interfere with a camera lens underneath them if there's no cutout for the lens.
Of course, no cutout would look great, but I would prefer the full camera clarity and 'suffer' the cutout and loss of 75 pixels or whatever it amounts to!

Who cares? Without Face ID the thing is a total non-starter. Nobody wants an iPhone without Face ID. Fewer than nobody wants an iPhone with side button touch ID, which is the single worst user experience Apple has delivered yet. Don’t even think for a second that it’s an acceptable trade-off. I downgraded from an iPad Pro to an iPad Air a while back and even after using it for months and months I still want to throw the thing out the window every time I have to unlock it. It’s just such an awful UX.

This really is starting to sound like a product where everything is lower quality than the iPhone Pro, but it folds.

Umm...no thanks.
That’s literally exactly what it is. Yet people here will downvote you and argue with you despite the fact that there is no avoiding this.

What’s even more amazing about it is we just went through this with the iPhone Air, which I personally love and do not regret getting, but many of its compromises are not things that pro users are willing to accept. Yet those are the same people here claiming that the foldable is the next best thing. Even though it’s already clear that the foldable will have even more compromises than the iPhone Air. Many more.

Lack of optical image stabilization is definitely not good. The megapixel count of 24 is nice. But disappointing with the rumors regarding the back camera and the lack of telephoto lens.

hardly, face ID is great if you have the phone in your hands but picking it up and using side button is just as fast and hardly an issue. It's far better to use on a desk for one. If the touch ID was on top of the device like ipad air and mini then yes thats an issue but it won't be. It will be manageable on the side

The compromises will basically only be in camera quality. Thats about it.

Thats where the pros will always be the better option

losing face ID for touch ID really isn't a compromise.
