Aren't the LiquidMetal and "Liquid Metal" two different things? Why most rumours put those together?

I'm curious to see what they come up with in this space, but lately it seems like they've become a company that overpromises and under-delivers. They really need to nail this folding phone.
M4 hit it out of the park.
Mac Mini M4 is perhaps the best value Mac of all time.
M4Max is a beast of a chip that can run in a laptop.
M4 MBA just came down in price.
Their Mac lineup is solid right now. The best in years.

Oh oh - I get a chance to repost the size comparison I made to judge if the 5.5" outer screen is comparable to the iPhone mini at 5.4".

I struggled to guess if the two sides would butt up against each other, or if there is a central hinge / spine that they fold against. I settled on them folding similar to the current Samsung phones. My guess is this is strangely both bigger and smaller than an iPhone Pro Max.

This sketch doesn't actually show a hinge, which I guess would protrude like all the other current folding phones do.

This would be such an Apple approach to the people who want an iPhone Mini.

"We heard you wanted a 5 and a half inch screen, so we've brought it back. Everything you loved about the iPhone Mini. Plus an iPad. And it starts at two thousand dollars now. And we think you're gonna love it!"

No doubt Apple foldables will revolution the smartphone industry as the first iPhone did when Steve Jobs introduced for the first time back in 2007.

For people who says that foldables is a gimmick or a solution in search of a problem, I just can say that foldables have the characteristic of deliver a big screen in a small form factor device, and if the device is a book-style, it can be 2 products in 1: iPhone and iPad Mini.

I’m all for Apple foldables. I’ve been waiting for this at least since 2019, as is stated in my MR signature.
It's two-in-one : a phone that's too thick to be comfortable to use, and an iPad that's just a bit too small to do anything other than quick web searches or consume content...

The Mini actually had an obvious user base though, kids/teens (including mine) and those who don't like/want/need a massive screen on a bulky phone that won't fit in their pocket. It might not be the majority, but it's more than a small niche.

Apple foldables as I said, may bring a massive screen in a small and not bulky phone that perfectly fit in your pocket. Thank you.

I might not be as excited as you, but I'm with you! I'm ready to see what Apple brings to the foldable market. Never used a Samsung fold but always found them interesting

That was a quarter of century ago, before broadband internet never mind music streaming.
I'm not sure what that has to do with my comment. I replied to a commenter who said: "Who cares? Least wanted product EVER! Just fix what we have..."

I simply pointed out that people made similar comments about the iPod (https://slashdot.org/story/01/10/23/1816257/apple-releases-ipod) suggesting that people didn't want one. We know how that turned out.

Just because some, even most, people don't want a folding iPhone doesn't mean it's the "least wanted product EVER". Maybe that commenter doesn't want one (I'm unlikely to buy one for at least several years, if ever), but folding smartphones are not going away any time soon. I know several people who have and really like them.

Folding smartphones are a small part of the market (estimated between 1-2%), but that's in part because they generally cost much more than other phones. They are expected to be a growing segment, likely driven by the expectation that Apple will release one.

So there is less screen folded, and opened, when watching most movies/media, it has less screen as well. It'll just be letterboxed.

If they show up this late to the folding phone party they better have something in store that one-ups the competition, and I guess making a way better hinge mechanism and minimizing the crease is one of these things.

Nice sketch, thank you!

I actually like the unfolded screen dimensions this way, somewhere between a 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratio just makes a lot of sense to me for tablet-like usage. But folded, it's very wider. Wider than a 16 Pro Max is quite something. I'd imagine I wouldn't really be able to use this one-handed with my relatively small hands (with my 16 Pro I'm pretty much on the limit in terms of one-handed use).

Might feel weird when the phone is wider than a 16 Pro Max but shorter than a 13 mini. But I guess single folding phones will have to either compromise the folded or the unfolded aspect ratio. Double folding makes a lot more sense for me in this sense (Huawei Mate XT), but that's probably at least 10 years away for Apple.

Ridiculous would be to think that Apple won’t launch a foldable anytime in the future.

And yes, a lot of brands already offers foldables, but not a brand with the world influence, enough commercial scope and quality to change and impose a world trend as Apple is.

Would like to bet?
So, Google and Samsung don’t have “world influence”? Apple already attempted to do something similar with the Vision Pro and by pricing it SO high very few units were sold in comparison to other VR/MR devices. I expect the same will happen with the “iPhone Fold”, priced too high and nothing that differentiates it from the competition (Devices that have been out for years, with several iterations already, and priced MUCH lower).
