Yup, I'm expecting the same. A niche product simply due to price, no revolution.

Apple reasoned Vision Pro replaced many separate products that amount to an even higher price (flawed logic when your household exceeds one person, but whatever), but in this case you're replacing a 1,000 dollar iPhone plus 1,000 dollar iPad with a 2,500 dollar folding phone that has a smaller screen than said iPad. It just doesn't seem like a good deal. And I don't see a foldable being as much of a tablet as an iPad, it's way off if you see iPad as an alternative to a laptop.

Maybe Apple has a couple of aces up their sleeves and that could come from the software. Software that might launch two years later.. Oh well.
A lot of people don’t want a larger iPad. I can only stand using the mini.

Surely I'm not the only one who had been hoping the folding iPhone would be a way to achieve a return to a "mini" sized phone in the pocket that expands to a somewhat larger device when unfolded? Essentially, a flip phone-sized iPhone?

If nothing like this ever comes to pass I'm going to have to stock up on spare iPhone 13 mini devices to use when my current 13 mini dies. 😕

Thats what this is.

Well, it will at least be interesting to see.
I doubt I will have enough disposable income in 2027 to splurge on this. Muss less a pressing need.

Buyers with black credit cards or uncontrolled impulse spending will love these, though, I'm sure.

Maybe they'll offer a cheaper one with home-depot style hinges to accompany the recession we'll be in in 2027...

I don’t care about the hinge. I want to know what they are doing to make the crease in the middle of the screen not look like complete ass after a month of folding like the Samsung’s do.
Having an especially strong hinge whose parts don't shift positions, over time, from where they should be, is one of the more important design requirements for maintaining a flat screen that doesn't develop a crease.

I can't imagine anyone feeling less excited about this than I do. More excited about bout the new Beats charging cables.
Those Beats charging cables are pretty tempting. Amazingly, if you also want to use them as data transfer cables, they'll do it at a blinding USB 2.0 speed, not that slow 1.0 standard that we've been stuck with all these years. And the topper: they have a lower case "b" on them, not that annoying upper case "B".

I’ll keep with the non-foldables as long as I can then switch to another brand if necessary. This is simply one more thing to break.

Liquid Metal? So the parts are cast, a typical metal molding technique.

Glass reinforced? We call it fiberglass. It’s used in many plastics like nylon.

Borrring!!!
LiquidMetal isn't glass-reinforced metal. It's a cast metal alloy containing no silicon, but it differs in that it involves cooling down the molten metal faster than is done with typical molding techniques. This prevents the alloy from forming into the conventional crystalline structures that are much more breakable, and instead it solidifies into an amorphous structure, which is a characteristic of glass.

I’ll be getting this phone day 1. Why? I have come to realize I truly don’t need an iPad. As much as I’d love to keep drawing, I just don’t have the time to make a serious go of it. For everything else there’s a Mac for that.

Secondly, I have been eying those Samsung and Google folds for a while now, but I can never pull the trigger. For one, certainly the apple ecosystem is strong, but more over its the failure rate of these foldables. Pretty much every foldable owner’s experience I read about say it’s not a matter of if the screen will crack, but when the screen will crack, and good luck with warranties and insurance.

Unless something drastic changes at apple, their AppleCare has always helped when I needed it, and AppleCare will most definitely be needed for this device.

Lastly, it’s the apple stores. You can take your device to a physical location to be repaired. Can’t say that about Samsung or google. From what I have read and watched, their customer service is a nightmare a lot of the time. One YouTuber had to pull, I’m a YouTuber to get his phone replaced under the warranty.

I toyed around with picking up a refurbed foldable for sub $500, but it’s rolling the dice, even at that price, and it’s not worth the ecosystem switch, even if it is easier now.

Ultimately, this will be my ultimate hitchhikers guide.
Please, Apple, do something interesting for once, and get this to market.

Yes! As a non engineer with an interest in Materials Science, this article about a hinge made from Amorphous Metal led me to some interesting reading. Seems like an elegant solution.

Metallic Glass. Scotty is that you? If so, beam me up.
#transparentaluminum

As an aside, I initially misread that as amorous metal: Is that amorous metal in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?
Pssst: the sapphire lens on your camera or smart watch face is already transparent aluminum. 🐋 🐋 🐳 🤫
