It is a true reflection of Tim Cook's Apple. Just like Vision Pro. The previous Apple never would have released either product. Tim Cook's only goal in life is to see what he can convince people to pay for something.
AVP is a superb demonstration of a new tech direction; exactly the kind of thing that the world's most successful tech company should be investing R&D in. Kudos to Cook and his teams.

Your mistake, like so many other folks, is in your incorrect assumption of: "VR headset when the market has already decided that they only succeed and sell when sub-$500."

Realize first that the AVP is not simply a "VR headset." Take some time, do more than one brief test session, and look at the AVCP as a new-tech test bed, which is what it is. The fact that more than 100k units sold at $3500 is pretty amazing really; most of those buyers certainly did not drop $3500 because they were looking for a "VR headset."

As Apple proceeds with the AVP a big marketing challenge will be to educate the public that has been preconditioned to think that goggles one puts on one's head are always simply the [IMO often crap] "VR headsets" that have been sold for years by Oculus, Meta, MS, etc. The reality [intentional pun] of AVP is quite different, but understanding does take some thought.
Therein lies the problem for Apple. How many times do you expect a consumer to keep trying AVP to be convinced they need it? I was in the Apple Store and asked to demo AVP and was told to make a reservation and come back. Apple lost any chance at a sale there when I'm present in person. I justified spending $3500 on an M3 Max MacBook Pro at launch, but definitely don't see the same value in AVP. Regardless, I wanted to give AVP a chance to see if a demo could sway me but Apple didn't make that easy. A lot of people question the value of a foldable but AVP is an even farther reach.

Incorrect. We don’t know that “it’s junk” because it hasn’t launched yet. The real differentiator for Apple’s foldable will be the software and what you can do with it. If I can use the Apple Pencil with it for instance, and use it like an iPad, it will be very tempting. They might market it as an iPhone AND and iPad.

Apple released lots of products that have been niche, discontinued or didn’t have an apparent market.
Why criticise something that hasn’t been officially announced, let alone reviewed?🤷🏽

To be fair some people didn’t see benefit or use case for the iPad when it launched.
It has done pretty well since launch.

Another big step in the Androidification of Apple.

I really miss the Apple which refused to let people use a wallpaper on backgrounds because it's unnecessary and bad design. I really miss the Apple which refused to put more than one button on mice. That Apple would close up shop before making a foldable phone.

So would you have preferred Apple to keep the same form factor as the original iPhone to 8 Plus with home button and large bezels?

You hate with no regard for advancing the future. Will it be perfect? No, even if Apple could make it perfect model one they wouldn’t so they can get people to upgrade annually. I for one really hope they execute it well.

I believe Apple needs to take this path more than a Vision Pro. More than an Apple Car. They need to spend resources on advancing products and software for the future.

Don’t give me that crap. People were begging for an iPad for 3 years after they saw iPhone. It has been immensely popular since day one.

Absolutely no one asked for a Vision Pro, and no one is asking for a foldable phone. Especially not one that starts at $2,000.

I was a huge Apple fan.
I think iPhone needed a foldable, i would even argue iPhone should have a dex mode. Apple always made fun personal devices

Apple vision could’ve been an amazing device if it weren’t for the App Store. If it was opened up as a real compute platform like a Mac or a meta quest it would have changed the VR industry. Instead it shipped without even having webXR enabled.
It would be better if it’s less powerful, but much lighter like a pair of meta glasses

I’m not personally interested in a foldable iPhone, but if other people like it then good on Apple for making it. I’m all for choice.

I’ve demo’d the AVP a few times. I’m warming up to it. If the rumored V2 comes out soon I’ll probably get it. I don’t care much about 3D dinosaurs. The recent demo with the persistent widgets really got my attention. I can see using that in my workshop with different tools posted around the room.

The immersive videos also seem good for relaxing. I just saw a study showing that an immersive videos was almost as beneficial as a trip to the forest, but without the need for getting in the car and going there.

Is this just a troll post? What kind of person defines a product as junk before it is released or even seen in beta? Especially an unreleased product from a hugely successful company that is successful because it seldom releases junk.
Be careful saying that here. The mods have deleted every post where Ive called out the “trolls” (as you’ve mentioned) and sent a nastygram to me.

I think they enjoy this kind of posts that drive engagement cause it helps them show more ads. What would be the point of actually moderating and ensuring high quality content? Same stuff all over the internet these days.

Controversial and contentious posts drive up engagement and lead to more money.

Yup, this is probably true of any free social platform on the internet, unless it’s a nonprofit. I’m sure the mods don’t enjoy it either, but everyone is just trying to pay the bills and keep the lights on.
For me, the good here (information and entertainment) generally outweighs the bad (trolling, vitriol, irrational and counter factual posts), but there are times when I do consider quitting MacRumors forums and just being an article reader or maybe even only a headline reader, for the sake of time and sanity.

Steve Jobs has been dead for a long time. No way Apple will continue his “plan” forever. The foldable will sell to the people who can afford it.

That is simply not true. Millions of people would love a good quality foldable iPhone. There’s many people in this very thread. We don’t care about the vision of dead people. We care about a good product that would provide value to us.

Your choice. There is space for both. Back in the day before the arms race on size started I used to love a foldable phone, the Motorola Razr stands out but Samsung also had a decent one. Now we’re in the age of touch screens I’m no longer sure though and will probably be on the Pro Max

I have to say if Apple actually releases a foldable iPhone, it will be the most clear sign that the company has abandoned a lot of Steve Jobs principles that got it to where it is. Foldable phones go 100% against Apple philosophy. It's the next netbook. It's a stupid gimmick that compromises design principles of durability, aesthetic and to add what? Few inches of plastic screen.
This will be the biggest sign on the wall "I'm Tim Cook, I don't know what else to create, so I've do another Newton". Apple Vision was the first product they made that while nowhere near as bad as a foldable phone, was the first device that didn't have a proper use case. And released 8 years too early. Because....investors, stock, we need to innovate? Yeah, probably. There was a lot internal resistance at Apple before the release. For a good reason. It made no sense. As a concept in the future, Apple Vision may make sense. (watch didn't have a killer app - yes, but they have pulled it off eventually, difference is tech to build a good product was there).

But foldable phone...Steve Jobs said many times "we don't ship junk". It's junk. Do you remember how nuts Steve went before original iPhone release when he scratched a prototype plastic screen? He made Corning go nuclear to retool the factory to have a glass screen before 2007. And they will ship plastic ******** for 2+ grand...?

Just genuinely sad to see company giving up on what it stood for. Slowly, gradually.
You sound like you spent more time writing this than you actually have using foldables.

First of all it's "they're", not "there". Secondly, of course foldables aren't replacing slab phones. The cost is too expensive and slabs will always be cheaper to manufacture.

I have to admit, I don’t understand this at all. To give an analogy, this seems like a person who likes using a desktop computer saying that laptops should not be made because he doesn’t like them. Why not have a choice? And to go even further, who cares about the vision of some guy? How does that affect your life? Do you see Apple like a sports team that you root for? Or a philosophy or religion that you want to follow?

I don’t care about Apple, its owners, its founders, or any of their visions. I only care about the product and how it could provide value to myself, my company, etc.

Right now I’m sitting in my truck making this post on my iPhone. I have a little bit of work I could do but I left my iPad at home so I’ll do it on the iPhone. If I could open up the iPhone to a bigger display right now it would be great. A foldable iPhone would work for me. But under no circumstance am I saying that everybody should buy one, I know it wouldn’t work for other people. What I can’t understand is why you would want to prevent us from having a choice. This reminds me of that old meme where the angry little kid is yelling “Stop liking what I don’t like!“.
