But years into the development they might start adding iPad features to the folding phone, just like how they're drip-feeding macOS features to iPad. They will cite improved processor speed and battery life over the generations for making the extra features possible.
Are you saying they will be lying? How do you know?

Preorder for me. I want an iPhone that unfolds and doubles as an iPad. Seems like a great idea. Love the Samsung and other foldables. I do hope Apple has a solution for the crease. But in using my friends Samsung Fold 6, I realized you can’t see the fold except from an angle like as someone observing. Straight on the only thing is can slightly feel it.

I do think this is a product Apple will end up selling a lot of. But it depends on execution. AppleCare+ will be a must add to purchase for a foldable. I only wish Apple would release one this year.
Wait till Apple excludes screen issues from this. I think you may think twice about paying 3x more for a phone that’ll break easily

If a foldable iPhone happens and the crease issue is 100% solved, then I’d say that would be a move typical of Steve: don’t release garbage, stand on the shoulders of giants and release something better.

I have no need for a folding iPhone. I have very few apps and went from a 6 to a 14 Pro, because the 6 died. But if the crease issue is solved, then I’ll have a play with one in a store, admire it for what it is without buying one.

I don’t like foldable in general but Apple maybe can change my mind, probably not. The point is at the beginning foldable were horrible, they broke so easily and still today we have bulge on screen. Technically it is obvious still not “Apple like” maybe Apple will be able to make a foldable without any bulge and with another great peculiar feature maybe not. Still foldable are not for everyone

Years ago, I had a Microsoft Surface Duo as a work phone and I bloody loved it! The two screen format was a huge productivity booster: taking notes while browsing the internet, a document or while on a videoconference. I was gutted when they replaced them with mid-range Samsungs.
I was waiting for the Duo 3 and was looking forward to switching from my iOS devices. If M$ hadn’t discontinued the line, I would probably be typing this reply on it. I like the idea of foldable, but hate the fold and crease. I wanted the Duo because it went the other way and just slammed two screens together.

Define easily… For me titanium has been the magic material. Aluminum and steel both dent really easily when dropped as iPhones. I mean the aluminum iPhone is almost destroyed when dropped once. The steel iPhone has scratches when dropped. The titanium has none on my iPhone and I have dropped it countless times.

I don’t buy the whole idea just because it opens and folds it will break. If built properly, it should be good. Bunt the materials matter. I won’t buy iPhones made from aluminum so my next iPhone has to be air or fold.

Let me re-state…in MY humble opinion, they are the most idiotic thing ever and in MY opinion, all this interest is merely a weak justification to like something for its novelty for a little while before moving on. In other words, a hype. I would love to look at sales numbers and see how many people own a bar phone vs how many own a folding phone in another 5 years.

It's 100% all individual opinions of course, coming from using the foldable since the Samsung fold 2 and moving around all the forums and Reddit and other places it's more than hype. It has some really useful features when implemented properly. You're not going to compare sales numbers from a phone that's a bar phone which is less expensive to a more expensive foldable and expect the numbers to be equal. Isn't it nice to have options though? I mean there is a market for it.

Even if you've no interest in Android Id recommend going to your nearest phone shop and checking out the Z Fold 7. Folded shut it's just the right size for a regular phone without being too big. Unfold it and it's a marvel of engineering, thinner even that the M4 iPad Pro.

The feeling of the plastic interior screen takes some getting used to as it's not glass. It feels quite soft under the finger but still sturdy. In Europe I see quite a few of them around, often from what seem like casual users. I see some mums rocking the older versions, like the Z3 or 4 still going strong.
I did that about a week ago. There is definite improvement over the last time I tried some folding phones about a year ago, and they've fixed some of the issues I used to complain about. The hinge feels nicer than it used to, but even though it is actual glass, the screen still feels too soft for my comfort. I still don't like their aspect ratio unfolded, they're too square. The only thing they're good for that I use is bumming around on the internet and reading books, and that's not nearly worth the premium they cost.

I suppose they are ultimately the plaything of the rich. They still remind me of the old Nokia Communicator series of phones which were aimed at the email junkies of their day.

Having only one device to carry is rather compelling as an idea (especially as it can output a desktop to a monitor) but in practice that £2000 price does buy a Nothing 3a, an ASUS Snapdragon laptop, a Kindle, a Switch and remove a single point of failure from your EDC.

Folding phones is the most idiotic concept ever. Why are we not calling it what it is?

It’s hilarious because it’s literally offering solutions to the problems that nobody is even willing to fabricate.

Ok, I'll admit I am unlikely to be an early adopter of a foldable iPhone, but not because I think its a bad idea.
For me I use my iPad when I need a larger screen.

But, I can see a use case for people who want a phone they can use in traditional/slab format but then access a bigger screen for certain functions such as using office tools or engineering type apps.
It is clear that some functions are easier on a bigger screen, and not everyone will want to carry an iPad as well as iPhone.
Comes down to personal choice, and as you say it may end up being too niche or only a small percentage of market. Time will tell.

I am someone who would greatly benefit from a folding phone. I do 99% of my personal computing and 95% of my business computing from my iPhone. And one of the main reasons I do that is because I could pull it out anytime anywhere and do what I have to. An iPad would make it a little bit easier because it has extra screen real estate, but it’s a second thing I would have to carry around. Which is why if I was able to open up my iPhone to a larger screen it would really be a benefit for me.

Unfortunately I really don’t like any folding phone I’ve seen yet and I’m not sure if I will like Apple’s offering. But I think it is absolutely crazy for someone to say that there’s no actual use and we are all just looking for a novelty.

No. foldable displays are actual flexible glass.
they usually have a plastic protector over top of them, but that does not mean that they are plastic themselves.
Also, here’s a little secret.
The front cover Glass on the Apple Vision Pro, apples $3500 headset? It’s covered in a layer of plastic to protect it. So, not even the first time Apple would have done this.

Look what up? I’ve seen plenty of Foldables reviews, they fall apart like paper. Here’s an example:

Wow, guy literally paid to destroy technology… Destroys technology.
he also destroyed the M4 iPad Pro, yet I’ve had mine for over a year with absolutely no issue, no bending, nothing like that.
it’s almost as if you set out to destroy something, you can probably destroy it.
An old 2000s flip phone might be indestructible when you drop it, but put a lighter to it, and then bend it with your full mite and it will probably break.

I am hoping you are wrong as I am holding to the idea of a Foldable phone that I would use for multiple reasons and won’t upgrade until another year … I am hoping also to have glasses that would connect to my iPhone. I understand it’s not a revolution but would keep me busy and content …

The vision pro’s plastic is not the same, this is unlikely to get scratched. It’s on the outside for starters

Meanwhile, that plastic cover on top of the glass? Yeah, that’s getting scratched to high heaven

And? It still scratched via his freaking fingernail lmao.
