Yeah, but the Go-Phone prices are ridiculous compared to contract prices.

True. I have two iPhones activated with post paid accounts and the lowest payment on those is $82 on the lowest iPhone plan.

I use a original iPhone on a prepaid plan and pay $73 for 400 minutes, that's 50 less than I get with a real iPhone plan and includes 3000 N&W minutes, plus I also have an unlimited data plan for $20 and 200 SMS. Yes, less than $10 savings and I get less. Plus, the data plans on prepaid are throttled and they no longer offer unlimited data.

Speed tests on my 3GS with a post paid sim get just under 3Mbps. Speed tests on the same phone with the post paid sim get 400-600Kbps. Lots of complaints about the pre paid data speeds on Howard Forums.

I didn't know about the data ... makes the prepaid and even worse deal.

Actually they CAN do that in Canada. You MUST have a data plan for any smart phone that has need to access the internet. For those that have not been charged with a data plan count yourselves lucky I am not sure how you are accessing data or if you are. However for anyone buying a phone that requires data, you must purchase a data plan or they won't allow you to have a contract with either Rogers or Telus. I don't like to include Bell but ... they exist also.

WW

Actually, they CAN'T. You are incorrect.

They cannot add anything to your account if you didn't buy it from them.

The only reason they say data is necessary is due to the subsidy of the phones. They mark them at a set price because they force customers to sign a contract with data, so they get more money out of it in the end.

They can't do that to you if you didn't buy the phone from them.

Before the iPhone came out in Canada, it used to be like so (for blackberry's):

$199 for a BlackBerry on a 3 year term with data.

$399 for a BlackBerry on a 3 year term without data.

$699 for a BlacKberry on month to month.

*that's just an example, the pricing varied as Rogers is stupid*

Once the iPhone was launched, that changed. If you bought ANY device that uses data, Rogers wanted you to get data. There was a way around it, by just accepting data and canceling it for $100, but I believe they don't allow you to cancel anymore (or they do but the penalty is way more).

However... if you are doing a HUP (hardware upgrade), you have an option of selecting data.

*again, pricing can vary based on your tenure and what tier you're in*

$449 for the iPhone 16GB without data
$199 for the iPhone 16GB with data

Either way... Rogers/Telus/Bell/Fido are gonna get their money, one way or another.

While true, if it is written into the contract that they can add data to your plan if you have a phone that requires it, and you sign the contract, then they can add it.

Not really. Not if you don't need tons of minutes. I get by perfectly fine with only 200 minutes, unlimited text and no data for $50/mo. That seems like a good deal to me. I was paying $100 before.

He doesn't want data, so data speeds do not matter in this case.

Yes, fine for you ... I'm sure most people use more than 200/min per month.

That wont make any difference at all.
Unlocked or not as soon as you stick your AT&T simcard in it they will know what device you're using to acess their network.

ah i see. tho im sure if you search through the iphones system via ssh or something you can change it to spoof a different phone

wow

never heard of a spoof phone program in Cydia guess I missed one! great to have a expert like you on the forum! Maybe Firmware 4.0 will include a spoof phone feature as well! seriously you can do allot with SSH spoofing your phone model isn't one of them!

In canada they dont care if you use the phone without carrier data.
AT&T mandates it.

oh really? =(
that sucks! although AT&T prices are probably better than any of Canadas plans?
i dont follow american cell companies so i dont really know

I was aware of that when I posted this. I was simply pointing out how much less you get on prepaid.

Nope, they know from the phones IMEI number which the baseband deasl with and transmits to the network when it negotiates connection, iphone OS has nothing to do with it, only way it would be possible is with hacking the baseband to fake an IMEI, and here at least in UK, that is flat out illegal to do even if/when possible.

Exactly. That's why I'm on pre-paid. Because I don't use more than 200 minutes a month, so I figured... might as well save some money. The 450 minutes I had with the iPhone plan was way too much and I had like a billion rollover minutes.... that's overkill for me.

I was aware of that when I posted this. I was simply pointing out how much less you get on prepaid.

Sometimes people want less. If you need lots of minutes and data, you definitely aren't going to wanna go pre-paid. It's designed for people like me... I don't really talk on the phone much, but I text a lot (unlimited texting is the same price).

This is also why I don't get an iPod touch. You can't use an iPod to text and make/receive phone calls. So an iPhone without data is way better than an iPod touch... plus, you get a camera and a mute switch too.

While true, if it is written into the contract that they can add data to your plan if you have a phone that requires it, and you sign the contract, then they can add it.

Well exactly... you aren't signing a contract for THAT phone if you didn't buy it from them, therefore.. they can't touch your account.

Unless Canada is different from the US, everyone signs the same contract regardless of the type of phone used, and regardless of whether or not that phone was bought subsidized. You can just be buying a little cheap POS phone for granny, but you still agree that if granny goes nuts and decides to buy a Blackberry or whatever from eBay, she has to have a data plan on it.

It's not easy and it's illegal to do it here in the US. Also, the whole ordeal will brick permanently your iPhone if you do something wrong.

Also, note to all whiners about getting a Data Plan by force. By using an iPhone you are agreeing to have a data plan added to you at anytime without notice. Those are the terms you have to agree to use an iPhone. You can't pay? Then don't use an iPhone as a phone and just use it as an iPod.

ziPhone used to be able to change your IEMI number.

Ziphone was for firmware 1.1.2+ and caused many problems to people who used it and permanently bricked alot of iphones.
You wouldnt be able to downgrade any iphone to that firmware unless its a 2G version and I wouldnt advise it to anyone cause they might regret it.
