The SDK is good news, even if Apple's continuous missing of deadlines is getting tiresome. But I wish they'd release an iPhone that's slightly bigger — even in landscape mode the softkeys are less than half the width of one of my fingers and entering text is extremely difficult. Especially non-dictionary words, e.g. every password I have for an online site.

Exciting! This could make the iPhone more useful to me than just a really nice web browser. :)

Who knows... maybe I'll even be able to see a photo I like online and save a copy to my iPhone! Where else could you get functionality like that?!!

I hope they are some sweet aps at launch. If they are all sold through itunes does that mean there wont be any free aps?

This is good news. Steve may have said people don't read books any more. Well I do - Dozens of eBooks on my Palm:eek:. If eReader develop a reader for iPhone/iPod Touch:) I would make my purchase immediately.

I'm sure there already exists an eBook app for jailbroken iPhones, so that (along with all the other existing apps) will probably be ported over pretty fast. I wouldn't be surprised to see basic versions of most types of apps within a week.

I wonder how developers would get their own programs onto their iPhones. Basically, I want to know what happens between finishing programming the app & putting it on to the iPhone. It would suck if the developer has to buy his own program back.

Well I hope Apple chooses to just allow iTunes to sync them automatically like Music, or allow drag and drop onto the iPhone's drive just like accessing the iPod in disk image. Either way, they'll make it easy.

I also wonder if Apple will be branding the iPhone and iPod touch platform as something else. They can't continue to keep using "iPhone and iPod touch" everywhere.

Agree

The fear for me is that Apple will only permit apps they've reviewed and placed in the iTunes store themselves, allowing them to control pricing (meaning, despite whatever the developer wishes, Apple will charge *something*), but more worryingly, deny access to any app that solves a problem they don't want solved. Like let's say AT&T doesn't want a chat client available because they don't want people using that rather than texting.. Apple just says, "sorry, we won't allow it on iTunes" and that's that, no app. That sort of thing.

Exactly my fear...

I think Apple will probably review apps before placing them in iTunes, but hopefully they will not control pricing. It would be nice if they recommended developers a certain price, but allowed the developer to make the final decision on pricing. If Apple does deny access to certain apps, I am pretty sure that people will find a work around like they have with ringtones and everything else.

OMG OMG

I really want to see some apps announced alongside this (Slingbox, and iChat). Overall this is good news that we did not go unnoticed. Looks like it will be March, not February.

Seriously, what is causing Apple to miss all of its deadlines recently?

Please tell me you aren't really complaining about the SDK being a week late.

There are some major US Presidential primary elections happening on Tuesday the 4th. The SDK news would get totally overshadowed if they announced it that day.

and apple already has a town hall on tuesday for investor information.....

I would pay for some apps, but I hoep some are free. Some of those apps offered for Jailbroken phones that basically do nothing (pair of 'boobs' shaking, snow across the screen like a xmas globe, etc) are not worth even $1. I'd pay up to $5 for a good app, maybe $10 if I needed for a Slingplayer.

I think you'll see some simple stuff go for $5. Usually its just not worth it for less than $10 though. Something like Slingplayer (not necessarily them) would go for $25-$30. Depends on the volume too.

Is this another one of those jokes like that idiot with Tiny Dimwit company did on us a few weeks back?

X3.... This is a my numero uno concern

honestly, i kinda wish that they just sprung it on us the day of. i mean, i know invitations had to be sent out. but now that i have a date, itll just slowly creep forward. i mean, waiting "til the end of february" went pretty quickly... this week will kill me... lol

I still find it hard to believe that Apple wouldn't make a public announcement about this. I am not putting my money on anything until I hear something official from Apple.

I suspect they'll require a digital signature, which will be free if your app goes on iTunes but cost something (probably $50-$100) if you don't add it to the iTunes Store.

I just got a Slingbox, and now I am really hoping for a Slingplayer for my Ipod touch.

I hope they actually have applications avalible on March 6th, and that they fully release the SDK then.

I also would like a couple good games to play as timewasters.

Damn! Slingbox on my new iPhone? I can't wait! I'm glad I finally broke down and bought one. I could kick myself for not doing it earlier!

Wow, Apple must be watching my iCal. Macworld Keynote was during one of my wife and mine's baby appointments (admittedly my own fault for scheduling that one), and now this event is during our 20 week ultrasound. The hospital does have wifi, so I could sneak updates on my touch, BUT...

I think my wife would kill me. And I am really excited about the ultrasound.
