Did they say that this morning?

Hopefully someone will provide a hack for this (just for O2 SIMs, obviously)...

They didn't say anything about what would work with hacks this morning! As far as they were concerned, hacking it isn't an option!

But on the net, it's widely known that unlocking and popping your own SIM in activates everything except the visual voicemail. Also, a hack to provide it is pretty much impossible as the voicemail is held on your networks server and without access to that, there's no way to provide the individual message's origins etc, which is what the visual voicemail does.

No problem. I have an america iPhone, unlocked. At some point I might get fed up unlocking it or watching out for patches that screw my phone up, so I might like to get an official O2 contract. I'm wondering if O2 will let me sign up and send me a sim card (in November), because I wouldn't have an O2 sim otherwise. I don't want to buy a second iphone just to get a contact on O2.

From reading all the posts here about people wanting to buy unlocked iPhones, why not consider selling your iPhone (probably for a premium) and then buy a brand new one from O2? Even if O2 helped you use your existing iPhone with their contract I expect they would still charge you the iPhone rates and your iPhone would still have the potential to mess up if software updates try to break the unlocking. Having an unlocked iPhone with O2 could be the worst of both worlds.

Transferring numbers

Does anyone think the following info from the O2 site is accurate, in suggesting that O2 customers will get a temporary number to use their iPhone straight away, but new customers transferring a number from another network might have to wait up to 5 working days before they can use the iPhone? If this is so, then I'm going to look into getting my number on Vodafone (pay monthly, but no longer tied into a contract) put onto an O2 Pay as you go sim and then I'll use that until I get the iPhone. Would this help?

New Customers

If you're an O2 customer billed by Carphone Warehouse, or you have a mobile phone with another network, you'll need to contact them to obtain a "PAC code" in order to transfer your number to your iPhone.
This process may take up to five working days to complete.
Please be aware that PAC codes are only valid for 30 days.

Existing Customers

If you're an existing O2 customer and you receive your bills directly from O2, or you're an O2 Pay & Go customer, during the activation process you'll be asked whether you'd like to transfer your existing O2 mobile number to your iPhone.
This process can take up to 5 working days to complete, but don't worry - we'll provide you with a temporary number so you can start enjoying your iPhone straight away.

Because you can dump the 'unlock' and go legit at any time. All we need to establish is if someone 'moving from the US to the UK' can get their iPhone onto the legitimate O2 tariff should they want to.

I know :) They wouldn't say what would work with hacks, but they would say "Visual Voicemail is only available on an iPhone tariff", I don't think they did though.

And, the only reason the SIM hacks don't activate Visual Voicemail, is because as you said, it's a network service and network-specific. All the SIM hacks that have been done - obviously - have been on all networks other than AT&T (the only network in the world, currently, to have visual voicemail). Therefore, if O2 have enabled visual voicemail on their network, with the correct hack, any *O2-UK* SIM should be able to access it...and it not simply be limited to an iPhone tariff, unless the feature needs to be "turned on" on your tariff by O2, etc.

It's a promising idea, something to hope for. I'd gladly give it up to run the 1.0.2 OS on my iPhone and have my existing calls package as opposed to the ridiculous one O2 are pushing on us in the hope that they can claw back some profit from this thing.

Hey, at least you guys got 7,500 free wifi hotspots, Did we get any over here? Hey Steve, hook us up with some free wifi man. Maybe at starbucks...oh yea, you want to make money on that.

ok, i know this has been asked, but can any one confirm:

if i buy a US iphone, and update is to firmware 1.1.1 (when it comes out)
can i pop in an 02 sim (p+go/cheap contract)
and will it work fine, just like that?

or, will i need to avoid activation, hack?

thanks in advance

No! You would need to get *UK* firmware 1.1.1, which will probably be 1.2 anyway by the time the UK iPhone is out in November. And, yes you'll need to activate it anyway, as you won't be activating an iPhone plan within iTunes.

You should be able to pop in a PAYG O2 SIM when the UK iPhone is out though - as the SIM lock will be for any O2 SIM, as long as you can configure voicemail (visual or not) you should be ok.

For now, activate/SIM hack a US iPhone and you can :)

Definitely, the O2 iPhone plans are laughable. Visual voicemail is barely a major feature for most people, and EDGE is only across 30% of the UK *at launch* anyway - takes them ages! Advantages: nothing to worry about with updates/unlocks/warranty, and free Cloud wi-fi etc. Nothing major really as most of us on here will be hacking at some point anyway, causing potential risks...

O2 iPhone tariff: £35 for 200mins/200 texts and "unlimited" GPRS and occasionally EDGE.

TMobile (probably best value overall): £32.50 for a mixture of 450mins/900 texts AND unlimited GPRS (<1mb/month).

Vodafone: £37.50 for 500mins/1000 texts, and <120mb/month GPRS (which isn't exactly a lot, but enough for most people for daily emails etc. when they're out of wi-fi range).

Not looked at Orange as yet.

Sort it out O2 and increase the allocations!!!

this thread is getting boring

and you wonder why we get called whingeing poms.

The iphone is a pretty good deal when you consider the whole package, not a fantastic deal not a great deal but not bad. Apple know that that they have a really good device with a real wow factor that they can sell at a premium.

All the people who have posted replies claiming they have 1000 mins for £10 also fail to mention the free wi-fi that comes with the iphone, if you want to compare the phone tariffs you need to take £10 off them to factor in the wi-fi package. Then it doesn't seem so bad and compares reasonably well with other mobile tariffs. Still more but not that much more.

It is worth what people will pay, and there will be a large number of people who will pay the price that Apple is asking. I know its not perfect, i know its a bit on the pricey side, i know there will be a better version launched in the near future. I also know i will be first in the line to buy one.

so your saying we can simply buy an iphone in the uk buy an 02 sim, pop it the phone and away you go?
no hacking at all, seems a bit easy does it not?

Thanks very much! does this mean that in the US you can just pop a AT&T pay as you go sim in, and it'll work?

also can someone tell me the best way no activate, without signing up a contract.

thanks

how do you know that's true?

It does, but SIM locks are just to a network, therefore all the network's SIMs should/will work in the phone, assuming you can configure the needed options (voicemail etc.). Remember, all AT&T SIM cards in US iPhones aren't exactly iPhone-only - they say "3G" on them, so they're obviously just generic SIMs.

cloud is £6.99 a month.

Im in the same boat, and according to the 02 iPhone page, its fine for existing customers to switch. Im going to call 02 tmrw to make sure, but it looks like we all good!!

What on earth is this all about?

No, you can't put any old PAYG sim in an iPhone, that's total nonsense. Unless your SIM is for one of the iPhone/O2 deals, you need to unlock, even if the sim you want to put in is an O2 one on a different tariff.

So long as you're happy getting considerably less for your £35/£45 with an iPhone than you currently do with your £40 N95, that should be fine...
