O2 = Useless. Worst data network in the UK, and still no 3G. They're damn expensive to boot - I can get unlimited data added to my T-mobile plan for £7.50.

I want a 3G iPhone with HSDPA on T-Mobile.

Steve are you listening?

very simple
buy from usa
unlock with software on the internet
use with your present network as a phone only
only surf internet when you are near free wifi
apple force us to do this
O2 will probably see all the iphone hack and higher management have to resign, like northern rock.

I think Apple could have had a massive sustainable hit on their hands with iphone if:

They hadn't partnered with anybody

They kept the iphone expensive, but left it up to the user what network/options they wanted to go with.

Currently, they are ripping us off! I get free ringtones on my current phone - why on earth are apple charging to convert a ring tone? Why are they ripping off the networks to get a percentage of their monthly premium?

Everything is just pure greed, and they'll pay for it when people basically say "Woah, ripoff" - the tide will turn, and pretty soon, if you have an iphone you're that "Dumb guy who doesn't recognise value for money" Especially, that attitude will be in europe.

Imagine if they hadn't got greedy, the longevity of the iphone could have been massive. It's not THAT good of a product to rip people off this much. It's really hurt my belief in Apple's wanting to do the right thing for the consumer.

no 3g in uk? that means that the rest of europe also won't get 3g iphones. lame, no deal for me. bring a 16 gb iphone with 3g in europe and edge in US where i can switch sim cards or a good international roaming tariff then maybe i'm interested.

i almost hope the iphone flops in europe. this would force apple to become more competitive and make better offers. right now they think they will be successful no matter what crappy tarif's they offer.

Mate have you ever used 3G ? Its *****..... apple not the flop but 3G has been the biggest technology flop of the last 8 years........ remember when it was released it was going to change the world ? well it didn't..... the phones are bigger, they are power hogs and impossible to use... and to be honest who wants to do video calling ? huh ?

Wi-Fi is a very smart move.... I would always use Wi-Fi instead of 3G.... no telco company wants to invest any further in 3G because of the money they wasted on the government auctions for a steaming pile krap they bought it for....

Surprised no-one seems to have asked about a PAYG option...

I was surprised that question wasn't asked during the event - without PAYG, iPhone won't be anywhere near as popular as it otherwise would be - especially with the cheapest tariff being £35.

I think people underestimate how many people *prefer* payg and use it through choice - not only because they can't get a contract for whatever reason.

That said, as activation is going to work the same was as in the US, I assume a PAYG option will have to be added to cover those that fail the credit check even though they've bought the box and opened it.

Do I get this right? O2 are investing now in 5-year old technology (EDGE) and deploying it to at least 30% of their network for launch?

That's crazy talk.

I hope their stocks plummet.

I wonder if you can use the iPhone on your own 02 tariff?

I'm not interested in the EDGE data (going to use wifi) so it would be good if I could pop in my own 02 sim and use a tariff that has decent call+sms limits.

Poor announcement.. I knew 02 would shaft the customers after :apple: made them pay 40%

I agree WI FI is the way to go, forget crappy power hog fat phones 3G. The deal with Cloud is great, at least if you're in London. But 1400 page limit is rather vague.

I will now NOT be buying the iPhone after those pathetic costs. I urge people to boycott and not buy. Apple and O2 are ripping us big time.

Entering Europe with EDGE is not exactly the best move. Europe mostly uses UMTS by now. EDGE never realy made it here, actually the few EDGE networks are being converted to UMTS.
For Europe iPhone needs at least 3G but HSDPA would be a better idea. I would/will wait for an 3G/HSDPA update.

Okay i don't know whty you people are complaining about O2's network, i get better coverage than i ever did on my Voda or Orange phone, the 3G works almost everywhere i travel to in the UK and even in Europe.

3G is pretty damn quick, it's faster than most hotel broadband connections, i 'Join a network on my phone' on the bluetooth menu on my MBP and i get a pretty quick connection on my laptop. Easily good enough for browsing the web and IM's and Email and even VPN.

Now Question: I am already a O2 customer, they are the cheapest for international calls. Can I not just buy a iPhone at the store and then pop in my O2 Sim card?????

My contract is up in October mind, but im happy with the phone number and plan.

Looks like no official PAYG option:
iPhone requires a new 18-month contract with O2. Existing O2 customers will have the option of keeping their existing phone number and upgrading their account to work with iPhone while new customers can also simply and easily transfer their current mobile number to O2.

I'd just like to know why the "training wheels for iPhone" iPod touch has the WiFi Music Store, obviously from the phone on display at the UK announcement the firmware is ready to go, but I'm still waiting in the States to get it for my iPhone.

It's probably they're trying to break anySIM with this update and that's holding up the overwhelming majority of stateside iPhone owners from getting features. Frankly I wish you yo-yos trying to figure out how to get an iPhone working on MetroPCS or Boost! Mobile would knock it off. It's only even one other carrier in the States you can use the iPhone with, their unlimited EDGE data plan costs twice as much than AT&T's, they don't even want you using iPhones on their stateside network, and you lose a lot of features dependent on AT&T service.

Knock it off, already. Take the deal or don't. Buy an iPod touch already, which gives you some of the features of iPhone over WiFi. But quit holding up the works because you won't pop 99 cents for a ringtone and you just have to use your iPhone with Tmobile, which as a long-time former Tmobile customer is no better or worse than AT&T.

I'd like my firmware update, please, instead of having to wait for features that are perfectly ready to go so Apple can break hacks for the iPhone.

So, thats the best deal they could do.

After dating all of UK's available suitors before choosing their bride, that represents the best marriage Apple was able to come up with. Makes you wonder how many of the other suitors came back for a 2nd date.
