that canada does not yet have the iphone is beyond ridiculous. really says something (awful) about our mobile providers... seriously.

That's why I bought an iPod touch 16GB instead of waiting for Rogers... which doesn't cover my area anyway (no matter what their TV ads try to say).

Crazy. There are still people in the world wanting to cap your data transfer. Besides, T-Mobile in Germany charges you €79 for 200 SMS and minutes, while they only charge €39 in Austria for 1000 minutes calls. What a rip off.

The best deal if you want an Iphone is an "open" one that will work with the networks of your choice. If you get prepaid cards in most European countries you will be able to make calls and navigate at much, much cheaper prices.

Apple is trying to restore the carrier rules of 1992, which is mostly still the rule in the USA. This is why their business is dirty. In Europe they force you to use T-Mobile or O2, both terrible companies with a horrible reputation.

Plans in Austria

Wow, I am shocked about how much more you´ll get in Austria even it´s the same carrier as in germany.

Germany:
49 € 100 Minutes 40 SMS - this is rediculous

Austria:
55 € 4.000 Minutes 1.000 SMS

For Germany, T-Mobile is a total rip-off !! :(

not last mates. remember the rich country closest to the states still has no iphone and my guess is that it will take very long till it does. but canada is way behind many other countries for mobile and i think one of the reasons is that canadians don't complain loud enough to make things change. they grumble inwardly.

good luck canadians!

i think the more relevant issue for THIS thread, is not why the iPhone is not available in canada, but "why would the irish or austrians buy this "outdated" phone"?

i believe steve jobs said, the 3g iPhone will arrive in 2008. at the latest, that would be the 3rd quarter of 2008.

would the t-mobile users of austria and ireland get a cheap update iPhone? i guess not.

Austria, not AustraLia

geez

Some people don't understand jokes. You are one of those people.

Yeah, us Canucks should get one. I don't understand the reason for the delay, but there must be something wrong with Rogers' network.

iPhone Ireland Pics

Hey all!

I got an iPhone myself from the States, and have been using it on the Meteor network here in Ireland. The official plans being offered by O2 Ireland are ridiculous when compared to the plans O2 offer UK customers. What's worse, is that "foreign" iPhones aren't allowed to join the official plan in Ireland! Unbelievable. This is in addition to there being no Visual Voicemail support. Grrr.

Nonetheless, I'm heading along to the O2 Experience Store on Grafton Street in Dublin for 10am (when it opens!) and will be taking some pics of the launch, if anyone is interested!! A bit sad, but I do love an Apple launch! I'll post them on my blog later.

You forgot to include, that the basic tariff in Austria starts at 39 €.

THAT is the real rip-off! So cursed be thee, bloody iPhone!

Omg!!!! No One Cares!!!

Then why do you post if you don't care?

Although I'm not interested in the iPhone because I'm satisfied with my 2 years old Motorola I got for 10 €, it's nice to know I could get one if I wanted.

The monthly fees are pretty good I must say, if it wasn't for the 400 € for the device itself. I'll rather save that for a new quad core mbp next year. :)

Well...

You forgot to include, that the basic tariff in Austria starts at 39 €.

THAT is the real rip-off! So cursed be thee, bloody iPhone!

The basic plan in Germany is EUR 49 for 100 min and 40 SMS

In Austria the basic plan is EUR 39 for 1000 min and 25c for each SMS, for EUR 55 you get 4000 min AND 1000 SMS !!

So: there IS a huge difference in fees between Austria and Germany, but this is true for all carriers and all rates...

Why ?: Austrian networks reap a huge profit from roaming fees, and are still fighting for customers. The lowest rates are about 3c per minute, whereas in Germany its 10c per minute !!

Omg!!!! No One Cares!!!
I'm sure those in Austria and Ireland do

Bear in mind that not all macrumors.com readers are from the US (despite the fact Europeans may have difficulty finding the site due to the spelling of rumours ;) ), and also this is relevant to the rest of us as it shows Apple's expansion of its iPhone platform into new territories, thus expanding the market. If you are an iPhone user, this is very good news for you as it pushes up the overall installed base.

But I am sure you were just joking. :)

Austria??? G'day mates....

(sorry it had to be said)
haha It is Austria.. not Australia
I think the second line was a good indication that he was joking.

It's a painful place to be when you consider our rip-off tariffs.

I for one, refuse to be price gouged.
