Finally got to see one in person, and I have to say that I love the size. Perfect size for a phone imo, and I can do the back swipe gesture with ease. The screen did look a little yellow, but if you turn True Tone off it looks significantly better to my eyes.

my biggest complaint would be the screen refresh. After coming from a 120hz screen, it’s almost impossible to go back to 60hz!! The animations just looked so choppy it was almost jarring. I read a thread or two on choppy animations on the 12 series so Im not sure if it was an actual issue, or just my eyes used to 120hz. I don’t remember the iPhone 11 looking so bad.
iOS seems very smooth on my Mini. I have an iPad Pro 12.9 2017 and a 1080P 165Hz Monitor for my PC but don’t see the need for a higher refresh rate for a screen this small.

Does sticking with dark mode 24/7 really make that much of a difference?

I get how in would, in theory, but I keep my phone set to automatic (dark mode kicks in at sunset) and I can’t imagine that going dark all the time would save a significant amount of battery.

I tried googling it and didn’t find much, so that’s why I’m asking.

Thanks!

What 120Hz phone do you use? I didn’t notice this kind of problem between XS and 12 mini.

In another thread, an 11 owner said there was about 8% better battery life in Dark Mode. I'm doing that, and using black wallpaper for an additional energy savings. I'm a light user, but not having to plug in at night is new to me (coming from a 6S) - I don't have to optimize, but it will make my battery life better with a lower cycle count.

Indeed, it does make a big difference. I'm sticking with dark all the way. Would recommend to get a black wallpaper or close to black

This phone feels like magic. I know I’ve gushed multiple times in this thread already but the Mini continues to impress me. To have all these features in a phone this small feels unreal. The ease of use is off the charts. I adore this mini phone.

Now that they fixed the Lock Screen issue, completely agree!

I have read somewhere on a technical site or so the differences with OLED and colors. And Red was very close to black. So a red wallpaper and dark mode wouldn't make a big difference. I was shocked that they were almost same battery consumption. Blue and I think violets, and white of course, consumed much more battery.

I tired ladies and gentlemen. I gave it a good run but sadly I'll be returning it for the non mini 12 today. I absolutely love the size but my little sausage fingers won't function properly and I mistype all the time. 😭

every day im inclining more and more to the high 5s as the sweetspot for smartphone size. a 5.8", non-edge, thin-rim design like the pixel 4a might just be the perfect formfactor

Red would “turn on” the pixels, so black ( where pixels are “turned off” on an OLED screen) would save the most battery.

Nearly two weeks in, and I just can’t imagine not using a phone of this size from here on out. In the distant future (I’m keeping this one for a long while) I’d absolutely love a 14 or 15 Pro Mini.

It is almost nothing pixels off vs dark grey f.e. And one site, can't find it anymore, explained it scientifically good and compared it and said that black pixels off vs red doesn't consume much more battery either. It is if I can remember violets and blue and white that consumed way more battery on OLED devices.

So important is no white, blue, violets, yellow backgrounds etc if you want to save some battery. iPhone 12 users here say white vs black iOS system preferences is about 8-10% more battery per 100% charge. For some that might not be that important either.

+ when you use the device a lot of pixels are still turned on in a variety of colors. And the once in black vs dark grey or red is negligible...

Anyone coming from an SE? Worried that the mini will be too big. The screen's bigger than a 6.

At the end of the day, unless you want to be stuck on aging hardware for the sake of size, this is really the only option. The screen is bigger than the one on a 6, but because of the lack of a bottom bezel it actually feels slightly smaller to use. While my ideal phone might be 5.2”, this phone is still very practical and enjoyable to use.

I returned mine yesterday, not because I didn't like it, I did mostly, but my on-again off-again hatred of iOS won out, then I read a thread about it still being USB 2.0, then another article about Apple (and many others) trying to water down the legislation against using slave labor in China (Uighurs among others) and I found that pretty disturbing.

I tend to be more of an Android user but go back and forth, still have my 100%-battery SE 1st gen running Home Sharing admin for my family, but I just took delivery of a Pixel 5 today thinking that would be the more practical, ethical alternative to the IP12, but the damn thing was perhaps the most underwhelming unboxing and setup I've ever had...phone was reset, packed up, and RMA'd within an hour haha!

I'm a gadget sucker like everyone else but have become a bit more discerning and environmentally conscious the last few years so I think I'll stick with my (used) Oneplus 7T and (refurbed) 18-month old Pixel 3 that they tell me is hopelessly obsolete (total crock of ****, it runs faster than the brand new 5!).

Yes I'm absolutely as guilty as the next person but am attempting to become more responsible by curtailing unnecessary new tech and/or buying used/refurbed when available.

My first reaction was OMG it’s an iPhone 5, but with iPhone 12 specs. I always thought the iPhone 5 was the best design. The new bigger phones are too wide and I never liked the rounded edges. Those things are meant to be dropped.

The other immediate reaction was the weight. The mini is super light. Love that. I find the bigger phones way to heavy with all that steel.

I’m mostly concerned about the battery, but I think I’ll be just fine. I really just want it for the utility of it more than to stare at. If I want to do that I’ll use my Samsung Galaxy S6 Tab.

I came from a SE and SE 2020. I think the mini is a little bigger than the SE which can make one-hand use a little difficult with default settings. However, I set the keyboard for one-handled use and invoked the “Back Tap” feature to use the Reachability feature as well as automatically seeing Notifications without having to swipe down. If my hands were large, I wouldn’t have to tweak the settings a little. I am very happy with the mini size and power.

For viewing today’s websites (which can be bad) and, integrating well with the Apple Watch and other devices, the original SE is past its time to retire, in my opinion. I will keep it for back up purposes. I don’t miss using it compared to the mini.

From what I saw in youtube reviews the battery life is terrible
My mini gets great battery life. I think the issue is people only using it after a setup and migrating their data over . iPhones have a lot of background tasks that take a couple days to finish. My phone was power hungry but now it’s doing great and the size is so much better.

That is very good battery the first full day.

Speaking of automation, I created two battery automations. One audibly alerts me when the battery reaches 100% and the other audibly alerts when the battery drops below 35%.
Wish there was a way to automate getting rid of the stupid "you're at 20%/10% battery"

FFS, I know. Let me turn that handholding off, Apple.

Could you please post a link to the USB 2 speed test and the claim of attempting to water down legislation against Uiguhurs? Thanks.
