I was just thinking about that last night- I am PWM sensitive, but never had trouble staring all day at a CRT TV or computer monitor back in the day. Strange!

I'm the opposite - I don't know if I've actually observed or can see the OLED PWT issue... but had terrible issues as a young software engineer w/ CRTs back in the day. 60 hz was esp. bad on my eyes, coupled with glare from overhead lights I would get headaches. I would typically push it up to 75+ hz is the graphic card and monitor supported it.

I haven’t owned the iPhone 12 mini more than hours yet. But I do have one thing that I dislike. The stereo speaker sound is a bit to tinny. When compared to its much cheaper iPhone SE2 its quite noticeable worse. Not what I expected from a phone this exapensive.

Just got mine 2 hours ago. Coming from an XS.

Once you hold this thing you realize how OBNOXIOUS the rounded design of the prior phones were. I ALWAYS felt they felt odd/crappy in the hand. This mini is slick, easy to hold, light as a feather and the screen is more realistic, I noticed my wallpapers pop more.

One handed use is a dream...the XS was slightly too big to where you had to scoot your hand up a little to reach the top with risk of dropping it.

Loving it.

Next year's modems will be smaller, far more power efficient, and able to merge LTE and 5G data streams. Unlike this year's phones, next year's modems will not require turning off one line to enable 5G if you have both the eSIM and a regular nano SIM with two different services - which I would think be useful to a traveler or a European.

I'm not an annual upgrader, but I probably will just for the better modem. If it also has a touch ID power button, so much the better.

That's not a limitation of the chipset, but the implementation by apple. The x55 modem can indeed handle dual 5G sims. Same way, I don't believe that Apple has enabled the real 5g-SA mode yet.

That being said, this 12 series and their new Qualcomm modem is a significant update and upgrade when compared to previous intel chipsets used in the other handsets after the 6s.

Coverage is definitely better. Astronomically better than the X series, Xr, 11 and so forth, which where stuck on 2x2. I can say it's performing better than my 11 pro max too.

This is something I'm curious to see for myself. I've seen several folks report this, and several other comment that it's just a small step down from the normal sized one.

Luckily Apple priced the Mini as a value oriented offering and thus such downgrades are to be expected...

..oh wait..

Trying now to restore my new phone and ran across some collateral damage. I haven't had new phone for 4 years, can't restore the phone until I update my MacBook OS. Which likely means some software will break, like QuickBooks. That's going to cost me.

My source is Qualcomm. This page specifically says about the X60:

"Support for 5G TDD-TDD sub-6 carrier aggregation allows SA networks to double peak speeds (compared to Snapdragon X55)."

Not sure about who is responsible for the dual 5G SIMs functionality except the iPhones will not work.

Oh instead of Bluetooth/Apple Magic where you place both phones next to each other to copy data/settings over?

Interesting you mention CRTs. I do remember some flickering with those, but didn't seem to cause eye or brain issues. Never thought about it, but of course there were lots of warnings about staring at them from close range for hours.
Yes it's surely not the same effect, but maybe you remember the transition from 50/60 Hz interlaced to 100/120 Hz progressive CRTs where many people complained about the old interlaced.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 5 I gave my sister finally gave up the ghost (possibly from filling up the memory with podcasts). So long story, but ended up with two 6S handsets, one of which I was just using as a gameboy. So knowing I was getting a new iPhone in just two weeks, I gave her the newer 6S (less than 2 years old). So I doubt such magic would work until I update the very old iOS on my old 6S - which I want to keep for an old game that cannot run on newer iOs versions. So I am stuck with using iTunes backup restore. Never synched iCloud with everything, just too creepy.

While this way is a lot of work, I have to believe the low bandwidth of Bluetooth would make for a long time to restore dozens of apps and many gigabytes of music.

So what we have is a slightly narrower longer screen than the 6/7/8/2020 SE to come up with that 5.4 specification. On my calipers, the diagonal measurement is only 5.2 inches. Apparently Apple pretends the screen is square, and comes up with 5.4 virtual inches. And of course, the notch also removes screen area.
It's stated on Apple's specs page: "The iPhone 12 mini display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.42 inches diagonally (actual viewable area is less)." This way of measuring the diagonal has been the same since Apple introduced the rounded-corners displays.

I don't think that is going to affect many, if any, users for few years. For starters, T-mobile is the only carrier using sub- TDD for sub 6GHz (midband). The majority of us will be using 4G LTE for a while. Not only is it more stable but it's also faster right now.

The biggest limitation is how the carriers deploy their network and spectrum.

I'm in the XS upgrade to Mini or Regular 12.

Can you provide some more photos? In the hand and such? Thanks!!!

Absolutely love my 12 mini. It’s the perfect size, perfect weight, perfect look (for me).

Returned my 12 Pro a few days ago and have zero regrets.

Been waiting for this device for years, and finally Apple gave us what a lot of people wanted when in reality, they didn’t have to. Very happy that did!

I noticed that the vibration (from the taptic engine) is now very subtle when plugging in the mini for charging, at first I thought I hadn't plugged it in correctly. It that normal with the newer models?

There is of course one obvious area Apple could have gained battery life, by excluding 5G. Wish they had done that with all the phones this year.
You at least have the option to disable 5g and just keep the LTE modem on. It should help with battery life. I asked in another thread if anyone had tried this, but got no responses.

It would be quite surprising if that didn't help with battery life. If your carrier contract doesn't support 5G though that might already have the same effect.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm just surprised no one has tried it so far to report back

Another mini-lover here!
I had bought regular 12 in white but it was a double error: too big for me (I came from 11 pro, and that size was already on my limits, so the slightly bigger size was noticeable for me!), and didn’t like that pinky white.
Sooooo.... I picked up a black mini and, OMG, I LOVE IT!
Yes, you may need some time to get used to the new screen, but after that you are in love with that cute little friend. So light and tiny. I normally don’t put a case on my phone to avoid handling a bigger size, but in this case it was just the opposite: I find it too small and tiny and I opted for a black leather case and that size combo is super.
I guess the word is “cute” for this thing.
