I don't want a Thousand people, 20 helicopters, 50 linemen, and an annoying signal strength tester - following me everywhere and then to the toilet

Hahahaha! Yea, I have Verizon now and they can get pretty damn annoying. Especially when you're with the girlfriend. :p

Unless 100% of AT&T's infrastructure explodes.....nope.

Verizon had their shot, and they rejected it. Their loss.

No matter what people say about AT&T's service, the iPhone would NOT have been possible without their help in innovating the mobile phone experience on the service provider end.

Sure, it took a company like Apple to get them to do it, but Verizon sure wouldnt and that shows AT&Ts open minded vision for the future.

Assuming we can agree that the iPhone is going to stay GSM - then what's the point of Apple buying out AT&T's contract? Just so people on T-Mobile can purchase iPhones?

I know some people hate AT&T, but isn't T-mobile the only other GSM option in the US?

so you are saying ALL phones Apple makes will be a version of "iPhone"???

iPhone is exclusive to ATT for the next 5 years.

exclusive:

  7. Excluding some or most, as from membership or participation: an exclusive club.
  8. Catering to a wealthy clientele; expensive: exclusive shops.
  9. Linguistics. Of, relating to, or being a first person plural pronoun that excludes the addressee, such as we in the sentence Chris and I will be in town tomorrow, so we can stop by your office.

  2. An exclusive right or privilege, as to market a product.

ATT spent millions just to add visual voicemail to their network.

No, they didn't spend millions. I do phone company programming. Visual voicemail wasn't hard to implement. It's just a different way of looking at the same data.

Keep in mind the reason why Verizon and Apple didnt work out to begin with. Verizon wanted their interface on the iphone - as well as verizon having a strong retail presence. Apple wants full control of how the iPhone gets activated (through iTunes)

Verizon doesn't put their interface on smartphones. They only control their dumb phones so their customers can move between them easily. The latter part is correct... Verizon didn't want to give up their own tune/app sales and distribution channels. I don't think they regret passing on it very much.

As for having both GSM and CDMA versions, plenty of other manufacturers have both versions for one model.

Then are they going with Sprint or T-Mobile ? Ther eis a bigger chance with T-Mobile because there outstanding plans and service (I used to have it switched to ATT)and they have the iPhone on T-Mobile in Germany

I love how people that cant get an iphone are always trying to claw onto any little bit of "what if!!!!!" they can.

But what if the CEO of AT&T caught Steve Jobs in bed with his wife! that would surely mean the iphone will come to verizon!

"...AT&T had granted Jobs unprecedented power. He had cajoled AT&T into spending millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours to create a new feature, so-called visual voicemail..."

not a fan of Verizon but...

Verizon's 4G network will be GSM...

so it's possible that if there is a 4G iPhone within the 5 year marriage with AT&T (which means AT&T would have to roll out their 4G network too) that the jailbroken 4G iPhone could be running on Verizon...but this isn't going to happen for a loooooooonnng time...

agreed

Just goes to show that all articles can't be trusted. Too much breathless hype.

I manage such things. I'd put two people on it for six months (it would take much less time, but this is the way things are done), especially since my guess is that Apple paid for it :)

That's one man-year (there's your 2,000 hours) and maybe up to $250,000 in corporate funny money.

No, where AT&T actually spent some time and money was when they stopped working on their 3G network, and ran around jacking up the speed on EDGE so it would be bearable.

Contracts are bought out all of the time...nothing is ever exclusive....

Steve originally approached verizon about putting the iphone on their network, they wanted too much control over the content and interface so steve went elsewhere, aka ATT.

verizon, sprint and att all have their pros and cons, att has cool phones and a service technology that is adopted almost worldwide. Sprint has service in rural areas and the whole walkie talkie thing. Verizon has...an interface with a bunch of red and bad customer service.... least to my experience. Im glad the iphone is stuck with att for a few more years. But this whole game could change depending on who gets a hold of that wireless bandwidth at 700 mhz.

Do you even have an iPhone...? I have a both AT&T for work and Verizon for personal use. I think the customer service for both are great. I have had to call AT&T a number of times and they seem like the nicest cust. service reps I have ever talked to...but..Verizon is also very good.
What I don't like is AT&T service..it seems much worse to me. I love the service I get from Verizon...never dropped calls and great coverage. Never have any trouble when I travel either.
If AT&T had better service I would have switched to them because I LOVE the iphone....but as much as I love the iphone I don't want to deal with AT&T as a network...this is just my experience and I cannot speak for everyone. Everyone that I know ( just about) has Verizon and have had no problems. Again..if AT&T's network was better I would have switched to get the iphone. I have the LG Voyager now..I love it but I still think I would rather have the iphone. I do love the full keyboard and I have large fingers and it is no problem. EVDO is another great feature. I hope Verizon does get the iPhone...but without any changes...

Thank you! Why do people find it so far-fetched for Apple to make a CDMA phone?

I don't know why people don't get that !!!

I love Apple and I love the iPhone but I hate AT&T...I hope it can be worked out so Verizon can get the iPhone. I have the LG Voyager now and I like it a lot..but sitll want the iphone

Maybe it is the same reason you feel so threatened that Verizon gets the iPhone...
the iPhone is a great product and many Verizon customers want it also..why is that so hard to swallow...they were not in on the negotiations with Verizon and Apple...what difference does it make to you..? I have both AT&T for work and Verizon for personal use and I think that the AT&T service sucks..(at least for me) that is why I won't switch my whole family over to AT&T

Apple is perfectly happy in bed with AT&T. They sell tons of phones (even to unlockers) and they have a profit sharing agreement with AT&T that gives them a portion of the proceeds from the plans of iPhone users, which is unprecedented. I don't see Verizon or anyone else giving up part of their income from monthly plan intake to Apple like AT&T is.

where did you get the 5 years contract? Apple never said how long their contract with ATT is. The 5 year deal was speculated by a reporter and then carried on as the truth. Nobody by Apple and ATT know how long their contract is. Can you find where APPLE said that their contract is for 5 years?

Seconded. There has not been a media reporter to my knowledge that has concrete info on the contract details, there lengths, clauses etc.

AT&T themselves just say

With this multi-year exclusive partnership, iPhone will only be available with wireless service from AT&T. Working together ensures seamless integration between network and device.

I can't see any official O2 info saying it is anything other than multi-year.
