Contracts are bought out all of the time...nothing is ever exclusive....

Well, Verizon's exclusively CDMA until they start rolling out 4G in 2010. No way Apple's going to go through the trouble of re-engineering the iPhone for Verizon. Nothing to do with the contracts, more to do with the components.

That's something that irks me. Do you not understand that GSM and CDMA are completely different and incompatible? You can make petitions and complain on forums all you want, but the fact of the matter is, it has less to do with contracts than it has to do with the internal components. As someone pointed out, CDMA RAZRs were thicker than GSM RAZRs, demonstrating the extent of the differences of the technologies.

And this just goes to establish that Verizon's going to run into some serious problems when they transition to 4G.

As an engineer for phone companies, I would say that such things don't matter that much. Either way, you rely on each radio chip maker to come up with 95% of the circuitry and code.

It's even quite possible that Apple had a prototype EVDO version, since they spent almost a year trying to come to a deal with Verizon.

Plenty of times I've had companies do one-off CDMA versions for me, just to test and say "no" to. Such investment risks are part of business.

So when someone says the radios are a big reason to not expect one on Verizon, my answer is, no they're not. Thinking they do, is an outsider's concept of how things work.

Well, I never said I was an insider, did I?

At any rate, I don't really forsee Apple working with Verizon. The reason I've stated in the past (and it still applies now) is that they're just simply incompatible. It would be an unstable relationship with an imminent divorce. Two big egos can't effectively share a contract together.

Whats the point of bringing up a 3 month old thread?
Guess your another verizon customer trying to get his hopes up :D
lol

Its funny that you make it seem odd replying to a 3 month old post..then you reply to me...that is one point...I'm not getting my hopes up high..I had my choice to go with AT&T my contract was up. I did like the iPhone but not enough to switch to a terrible network like AT&T. So...I chose to have the Voyager and Verizon rather than AT&T and the iPhone.

iPhone with Verizon

Just wanted to let you guys now I spoke with some internal people this week at Verizon and the iPhone will be available to work on their network sometime in December. They will be supporting GSM as well as CDMA according to two different people. You will also be able to bring your phone from any other network and use it with Verizon.

I'm gonna say not a chance. Verizon is cocky and thinks they can do better than the iPhone and will keep trying until they do.

I am sick and tired of all you verizon lovers, dreaming up reasons why apple will put an iphone out that runs on verizon's network.

Reason one: Verizon said no to the iphone in the first place.

Reason two: Anyone with a brain knows the iphone is a gsm phone. THE IPHONE HAS ONE MODEL (with 2 different disk space variations, and a white and black 16gig version). All in all, theyve all got the same basic guts, give or take a bigger flash drive. Bottom line is that introducing a cdma version of the iphone would present a number of changes to the guts of the iphone. It would also affect battery life etc. Essentially, it would leave apple with a gsm iphone that has different battery life than a cdma version. Also, the iphone is a global device, and in most countries the standard is gsm, NOT CDMA. I am no att fanboy, but the reality is that around the world gsm won that "format war."

I'm no expert or any thing, but I'm pretty sure it is impossible for Verizon to roll out a GSM network in 6 months. And if they were already doing it, we'd know. Otherwise, what you were told is illegal and possibly violates insider trading laws.

Yes Verizon is going "GSM" but only for 4G phones

What they mean is that Verizon will start tests with the 4G LTE platform.

LTE is what many of the GSM carriers are going to, as well as Verizon and Vodafone.

It doesn't support earlier 2G/3G GSM phones.

This is what is causing a lot of mistaken rumors about Verizon and "GSM".

Oh man, you really dont know how a phone works, do you? The radios in the phone are the least complicated part. Apple doesnt even deal with that! Look at how many phones are on different carriers! The Razr, every Blackberry, tons of LG's...they are all different radios inside, but that wasnt a big deal. The GSM/CDMA argument is getting old because it is NOT a big problem for Apple. Lets try not to be ignorant.

Why do people find it so far-fetched for Apple to make a CDMA phone?

Because Verizon had their chance. They were approached first. What does that say about them?

CDMA is only used in Japan and the U.S.A. "The Rest Of The World" is a bigger market.

Exclusivity contract with AT&T. Apple will break this, but only for other GSM providers.

so when do you guys think that verizon will include the iphone, Im going crazy about this. I really really wish that the iphone would be on verizons network.

Well, I have a friend who works at the 5th Ave store in Manhattan and he "promises" that the iPhone will be on Verizon in 2009. He told me that the workers there heard the contract with ATT ends in June 09...so that means it should be on Verizon, hopefully a bit later. I have no way to prove this to you, but trust me. This friend I know is that kind of guy who doesnt lie. You know what im talking about? :)

I retract my previous statements, I guess a moderator removed it... it was intense.

Verizon is awful and won't have an iPhone, period.

My gosh. Why did you not tell us earlier? Had you posted this in your first post, you could have saved us the trouble of making a huge thread about it and simply put it in the Wasteland right away.

Apple Retail knows NOTHING. They are not told that products exist until the day before their release when they are trained on them.

Who are these "internal people" you speak of? Where did this conversation take place? When you say that you spoke with these people, that implies a conversation. What else was said or did you just ask "Hey, will there ever by a Verizon iPhone?"

I'm not trying to discredit you but when all you say is "I spoke with some internal people" it could mean that the CEO is your father-in-law and he gave you explicit details at last weekends family bbq or it could mean that some punk kid working at a Verizon kiosk in the mall told you (no offense to mall kiosk employees).

Verizon had their chance with Apple, are they depressed they said no to them now and coming up with sad attempts at their own "iPhone Killer"? You bet they are but ATT is signed to Apple for the next 5 years. That means no one is getting their hands on the iPhone until at least 2012 (besides all these unlocking people). And even after that, who is to say Apple wont sign another 5 years to ATT? They seem pretty happy with them so far, ATT has catered to their every whim (visual voicemail, in-store activation with the new 3G iPhone), so best case scenario I would say the iPhone will be unlocked to all carriers after their deal with ATT runs out in 2012 but to GSM providers. Unless Verizon switches to GSM they are not going to be compatible with the iPhone because I seriously doubt Apple will make another CDMA version of the iPhone along with the GSM one just to cater to Verizon, especially after they turned Apple down. Sorry Verizon people, it aint happening. Besides Verizon sucks:)

Verizon is pretty good better than anything I have had thus far. How many minutes do you get with the iphone if you are under ATT and how much is it overall after tax and everything? Will it be the same for the new 3G coming in JULY?

I actually found this out two weeks ago. Also, this isnt about a product. It just refers to the contract. And I know Im right, and thats all that matters to me. Contract ends in 09! Heard it here first!

Charles Manson said the same thing. Then he said "Wolf kabob frob rannige!"

No, I've heard it here from other newbies already.

If it's real, you'd have proof. If you had proof, you'd post it. WE wouldn't ban you; that's what this website is all about. Apple legal would make arn take the incriminating papers down, but at least you wouldn't be called a liar for the next four years until the contract ends.

Hey everyone,

I have searched the forums and have found nothing about the topic. Do you think with the introduction of the 3G iPhone (hopefully this summer) Apple will also reveal they have bought out the contract with AT&T so Verizon customers can purchase the iPhone?
Then you didn't search very hard. There are multiple threads concening the iPhone and Verizon, such as https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/497266/. Remember, search is your friend. :D

Lemme know what you all think and lets play nice. :p

Thanks!

Well, if I recall, I read an article sometime ago that said Apple went to Verizon FIRST and Verizon said "no thanks"
