Yes, I understand a lot of people wanted this and glad they have it, but when I'm laying down trying to write a text message or read email it is such a pain when it switches over to landscape.

Yes, please make the rotating text keyboard an option! Some of us move/lay down our phone while texting and it almost always comes back the way I don't want it.

Why do people always say that? It's stupid.

It's such a nice option when you use your recent call log as a pseudo address book and you received a call from a wrong number, etc.

I think we say it because it's kind of funny. I agree though, it would be nice to delete wrong numbers, etc... without killing the whole log.

Hi,

Can anyone who has already installed the new iPhone OS 3.1 give us the observation on this?

I notice that after I upgraded to 3.0 (and after prolonged usage), my app no longer quit "normally".. It means that it doesn't fade out to the distance as it usually did in 2.2.1

It does fade and minimize away if I just restarted my iPhone, but after prolonged usage, like after browsing in Safari, replying mails, and opening SMS, it no longer does this...

Anyone experience the same thing? It's kinda annoying.. You know, you're expecting something but it 's not there.. It's like something is missing...

Thanks beforehand

I have noticed that on both my 2G and my wife's 3G iphone since OS 1.0.

On the Bluetooth voice dialing. Are we talking about it working with the regular earpieces or some special ADPD stereo headsets only?

I wish I hadn't lobbied for copy/paste, it's so ugly. I feel sure that apple had it in the original concept and deleted the code and wiped the disk it was on and then buried it in a large hole in the ground along with a few copies of Vista to make sure it rotted quickly. I don't even find it consistent, sometimes I get the choice of what to copy, sometimes everything is selected and that's it and just editing one character means getting the worlds largest phone popup asking me if I want to copy something.

oh yeah auto tilt on mail annoys me too, especially when it tilts and decides I shook the phone and tells me there's nothing to undo the next time I look at it.

Agreed. That's why it took so long to get it. They tried very hard to make it consistent, and with how difficult it is to do I think they did a pretty good job. I don't see anything else better on the mobile device market.

Oh please, add task-sync with iCal. We shouldn't have to ask for this one. It's a basic feature.

Oh, and whilst we're at it -- a version of iWork for iPhone that syncs with Mac. Once again, this used to be a basic feature of Windows CE and Windows PocketPC.

+1

I've heard the % is not very accurate on the 3G and lower. I dunno

Ok, the % is a great feature, but also very depressing. By this i mean you really start to understand how fast it drains when you have a true %. I think it would be nice to have only once you get below 10%.

Yeah, and landscape stuff makes using an iPhone while lying in bed a total pain in the ass. Sure it's great if you only ever use your iPhone standing up or sitting, but I know I like to text in bed on my side.

I agree.

Im experiencing HUGE gains in the area of the battery.

I have been experiencing bad battery drainage with 3.0 to the point that it would be 50% in about 4 hours which is pretty bad.

Currently, im on hour two with no USB connection and its still at 98%.

Thats pretty substantial.

This has me excited. My battery life is horrible. I even had my phone exchanged once because I thought the battery was screwed up.

I think the point updates i.e. 3.1 are free. It won't cost us until 4.0
Plenty of extra features there. $5 for iPod Touch owners?
I was being sarcastic. ;)
Sarcastic nothing. Try 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Someone should put together a little list of how much an "up-to-date" iPod Touch 1G user has paid to get from iPhone OS 1.1.1 to iPhone OS 3.0. At 2.0 they lowered the price to $10. Previous firmware updates were $20. I tried to Google it, but all I get are a bunch of irate iPod Touch owners complaining in a random, disorganized fashion.

As an iPhone owner, I'm mostly conscious to the iTouch complaining but not the pocketbook issues. Being a developer, I'm also aware of the impact on upgrading. But, at the end of the day, we've never had a situation where a mobile device manufacturer ran the same binary compatible OS/API across multiple markets, and continued the level of feature parity Apple has. It's unprecedented. It's like Sony Erickson phones running the same OS/API as Sony's Walkman line, or Microsoft's Zune's running the same OS/API as its Windows Mobile. I think the closest I see is Nokia's N-Gage platform, but you don't see any customer attention where Media Player users are wondering why their 2 year old device requires them to pay for new OS features that cellphone users get for free.

With a $229 Internet Ready OS-upgradeable device, Apple is providing extremely cheap updates all around. I'm still mad Palm left me behind on 5.0 (my device only supported 4.0). I suppose Apple will get there in its standard 7 year cycle, but to use the latest non-hardware OS features, and keep my hardware? $10 is small change, indeed.

I've totally changed my tune on OS updates:

"STAY IN PANTHER, AND WE WILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!"
What is this evil pact that has been made to usher Mac users into the future? Is there some distinctly loathsome reason no one wants to support Panther any more? I'm left wondering, am I spending $129 just to make my Mac a little slower? I figure by the end of the year, I'll be newly Mac'ed, but until then, am I buying into world of hurt for my G4, just to escape a world of hurt?
Move the developers and the customers will follow. It's a great strategy on Apple's part, and almost completely transparent to the users.

The interesting difference, is that there will eventually be a sizeable and growing population of iPod Touch users on out-dated OS versions (especially the unlocked and jailbroken types). The AppStore currently has little provisions for allowing the download of "older" versions of Apps that support non-upgraded devices (like an app originally requiring 2.1, but later requiring 3.0 after an update... the 2.1 compatible version ceases to exist... ANYWHERE).

Hurray for bluetooth voice control. I was very surprised that it didn't have it to start, but it's good to see the feature making its way into my iPhone quickly.

Wait, what? You had to use Apple earphones w/mic to call someone while driving?

Does it work with all bluetooth headsets now?

iPhone 3.1 Update

Will these features apply only for the 3GS model or also for the 3G? I dont get it, I've seen iphone 3g jailbroken with video apps working great. How come the 3G doesnt support video

That would be a nice addition which I think wouldn’t require much more than maybe adding a key to the keyboard to “lock” it in a particular orientation.

Anyone with a jawbone try the voice dialing now? I'm excited to see if it'll work. I don't see why it wouldn't.

Will the 3G ever have the voice control features?

I second this! The 3G should be able to do this regardless of the speed improvements in the 3GS. This is the only feature that interests me in the new model, and it's not worth the cost of an upgrade. Come on apple, stop crippling the software to sell more hardware!

or how about the fact that turning that function on drains your battery life even faster rofl.

also who cares about vibration when moving around apps? this is not a function i see worth mentioning honestly.
