Boy Genius Report noted over the weekend that Apple's new iPhone OS 3.2 released with the iPad contains references to four new iPhone OS devices. While the new listings, which appear to correspond to two new iPhones, an iPod touch, and an iPad, are not terribly surprising given Apple's product development timelines, they still provide reassurance of the company's future plans.

On the iPhone front, the iPhone OS 3.2 configuration file contains references to "iPhone3,2" and "iPhone3,3", two previously-undocumented iPhone devices. The iPhone 3GS currently carries the designation "iPhone2,1", and a successor "iPhone3,1" was discovered in a similar configuration file in March 2009. That device appears to have begun field testing last November and is expected to be released later this year. It is unknown how the newly-revelaled iPhone models relate to the "iPhone3,1" model currently in testing.

The current iPod touch carries a designation of "iPod3,1", and the new entry presumably refers to the next-generation model set for launch in the September timeframe if previous releases are any indication.

The first "iProd" entry showed up in March 2009 as "iProd0,1", which appeared to designate a prototype device. A new "iProd1,1" entry showed up last August that, as many had assumed, did turn out to be the iPad. While the listing has since been updated to be called "iPad1,1", the new "iProd2,1" listing is of course being considered as a possible next-generation iPad.

I wonder how many will take this as a sign to keep waiting for the iPad's next revision.

Couldn't iProd2,1 be the iPad 3G?

After buying an iPad I think I'm going to skip the next iPhone update. I only have enough for a new MBP in my Apple budget! Besides I don't need a front facing camera. I think it's something most people will play with then forget about. Everyone just wants more, more, more! But nothing's wrong with that. 😀

iprod2

I imagine that designation is for the 3g model since it will have a different feature-set and hardware

This just in: Apple will release newer versions of their products this year. And next year. And the year after 😉

I would agree if it was for video chatting alone however I see great potential for a FFC used for Head Tracking based "3D". Especially with personal portable devices.

i would be pretty mad if they update the iPad in july with the iPhone. Thats a bit quick for a revision. unless they just add a camera, i really don't care about that haha

iProd ... 😀

Ah, you'll only understand the long standing humour behind that name if you come from the West of Scotland or specifically Glasgow.

For many a year it's been the old joke than an iPod loaded with Rangers songs was called the "iProd".

More likely it's an ARM (Apple A4) based Apple TV device.

Future iPads would be iPad 1,2, iPad 2,1, etc, now that the category is created.

This looks more like a new iPhone OS platform to me.

Gps

All I have to say is the next iPod Touch and iPad BETTER HAVE BUILT-IN GPS!!! 😡

It's unbelievable the just-released iPad does not have GPS. There are so many way-to-cool applications for GPS, and no, the wifi/cell tower triangulation garbage will not suffice.

More interesting: how many of those who don't see this coming up, will bitch about it like when Apple reduced the price for iPhone 1st Gen.? Frustrated posts about how Apple rides the demand curve, cynically exploiting people's desire to have the latest trendy device before anyone else gets to buy it - only letting them to keep their I-have-it-but-you-do-not status for approximately 3 months before a cheaper and better revision becomes available to the masses. "the fanboy tax is too high! it's not fair!"

Oh well, an iPad bought today will still be as good in 3 months as it is today. No need to go an hero over it. Buy an iPad today. I know you want it.

Doesn't the 3g model have GPS? I have read several places that it does, though it could be wrong. I just had a look at the tech specs on the Apple site and it has "Assisted GPS" listed for the 3g model. I would assume that would be off tower triangulation though. However, oddly enough, the tech specs for the iPhone 3GS also has GPS listed as "Assisted GPS".

That is actually somewhat appealing to me, an ARM/SSD based :apple:TV, as it would cure the two biggest problems I have with my :apple:TV. Heat and heat (power).

I know that there's zero chance of this happening, but.....

Can you imagine how hilarious it would be if I new revision of iPad came out in September with forward and rear-facing cameras, an A9-based processor and 512 MB or a 1GB of RAM. I can hear it now. Jobs says "The first gen iPad was magical, and will still work just fine, but there were a few things Apple had up its sleeve that just weren't quite ready to go at that time. Now, everything is ready to go. This is the all-new iPad".

LOL

I can't wait to give my wife an iProd.

I'm still walking around with my iPhone 3G, and it's doing just fine. The plan is to just wait for the next revision, I'm sure I'll be glad I did once I finally have it.🙂

Hmmm... I didn't think about it that way! That might be cool! 😎

Just curious, how/why is heat a problem for your AppleTV? I have one and have yet to have ANY issue with it.

Not really funny and not really going to happen.

This summer they will release new iPhone hardware along with OS 4.0, for iPad too.

Wouldn't surprise me if they utilized battery tech in iPad for next iPhone. iPad battery output is 2.5x of iPhone's...
