True, but who says Apple won't use virtual memory in iPhone OS?

It going to be a performance hit, i just don't see apple trade app responsiveness for multitasking. I think they will rather limit the number of apps than use swap to launch more.

This would be hilarious if Steve pulled a fast one on everybody.

"Okay, now that everyone has their iPads in hand... it's time to show you what they can really do."

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if iPhone OS and iPad OS diverged here, with the iPhone getting OS 4 first. Then it comes out at a slightly later date for the iPad, with platform specific features added.

You know for the first 20 minutes of the iPad event I wouldnt have been shocked if steve said "Just kidding"

I would love it if he would do this but it would be spitting in the face of all the people who bought iPads for what they can do now.

Anyway this is very interesting and surprising. My iPhone 3g battery died a week or two ago (it cant hold a charge for more than one day) and this will make up my mind whether iphone 4 is worth waiting for or if I should get a new phone. Im shocked by the suddenness but am looking forward to this. Ive always thought the iPads processor is overkill for its functionality.

Wondering if it's possible that the iPad actually has this technology and that it'll be "activated" through iPhone OS 4.
It would be pretty sweet.

I won't hold my breath.. but yes, been holding out some hope for that ;-)

That doesn't tell us anything about how it will work other than, at most, the interface (and it's sufficiently vague that it doesn't tell us much even about that).

Why? Pressing a button (double tapping home button allegedly) or doing some swipe will open up a grid of app icons. What more is there to know? I'm posting it because there is people speculating how it will look or work. That's how it will function, sounds pretty accurate.

as long as it works on my iphone 3g ill be happy =)

i really dont see them not having it for 3g, although 4.0 will probably be the last upgrade for the 3g.

The "grid of icons" can show the icons for concurrently running applications or, alternatively, it may show the icons for suspended applications (i.e. no multitasking)

Except for the fact that the article mentions that it brings up currently running applications.

I hope it stops the extreme lag I get on my iPhone 3g. Sometimes it's unusable despite many restores since the 3.0 update. :(

Something else to expect - they won't be calling it "iPhone OS" any more. Since this OS now operates on three distinct devices, it's probably going to be renamed Mobile OSX or something similar.

I'm pretty sure they will change the OS name to MobileOS in order to match it with MobileMe.

Note that there's only a big 4 on the invitation image. Last year we had iPhone3.0 written on it.

Remember, iPad owners only get version 4.0 for free, 5.x will be a paid upgrade. I was hoping we get 3.3-3.9.... Seems like more of a value.

Is this true? They're not giving upgrades for free to iPad users only? But, for iPod Touch and iPhone users, the upgrades are free. I'd not heard this - that's a complete surprise (not saying you're wrong, just that I'm out of the loop on this piece of information).

In a recent posting, a reader here pointed out that users don't really multitask. Rather than multitasking, what you're really doing is switching quickly between applications - just like now with the current iPhone OS. In short: nobody needs "multitasking".

There are also many people complaining that there should be a change towards a new UI. My question is: What's so bad about the current one? I think it's really usable. And if you want another theme, go download one for WinterBoard.

I fear that there's no improvements possible for the iPhone OS. It's really just a device for media consumption, and it's really good at that already. It's never gonna be good at content creation.

I really hope they bring out multitasking plus hope they can bring out battery improvement too on 3.1.3.

My 2G iPhone is going to die with 4.0 if it includes multitasking. Might be time to finally upgrade.

There's "iPhone OS" written on the image though so i don't think they'll be changing the name just yet...

What everyone is actually concerned about. Namely what effect will lack of memory have? Is it true multitasking or merely saving and restoring state? Are there limitations as to what is permitted to be done in the background? etc.

They can't get a trademark on MobileOS, meaning anyone else could use the name, so they won't do that.

When the 3.0 Software picture was out, it was a blueprint. It looked like if Apple was working on the things consumers were missing. And this 4.0 picture looks like it’s mysterious, and has a serious side into it. That’s why only the leg is showing and the rest is the shadow of the 4. It’s like if Apple is trying to prove to us that this is a big deal in the software and that there’s gonna be a different side to it, and maybe Mr.Jobs is trying to prove himself right with the “A+” iPhone.
:apple:

Or just a simple message of things to come:

foreshadow (Number 4 in shadow)

I think it's pretty obvious we will see apps being able to run in the background because of the 4 in the image banner.
