Apple has no choice but to break out the big guns with all the competition in the smartphone space they have now.

Heres What We'll See

1. The ability to assign a certain # of apps to run in the background. Not full fledged multi-tasking but pretty close to it.

2. App organization into FOLDERS (such as games, sports, social networking, favorites, etc)

3. Not released until later this summer; they won't give a specific date because this OS will be released alongside the new iPhone. the new iPhone will be the first device to have 4.0 and specific versions will be released later on for earlier iphone models.

4. Ability to change the Home Screen's background theme. They probably will not allow the iPhone to run in landscape on the home screen.

5. My long shot - a dedicated iCHAT app! (wishful thinking)

Is this true? They're not giving upgrades for free to iPad users only? But, for iPod Touch and iPhone users, the upgrades are free. I'd not heard this - that's a complete surprise (not saying you're wrong, just that I'm out of the loop on this piece of information).

Hi,

Version 3 was a paid upgrade for the Touch.

iphone

is now a good time to buy a 3gs i need 1? or is apple going to pull the 4g iphone out their sleeve:confused:

It going to be a performance hit, i just don't see apple trade app responsiveness for multitasking. I think they will rather limit the number of apps than use swap to launch more.

How much of a performance hit do you expect? It isn't grabbing and storing information from a spinning hard drive.

all this means is another week of distracting from the fact they dont give a fsck about their pro machines... another week those who have been waiting will have to wait another week as a result of Apple's PR blackout besides their focused product of the week... iphone and ipad have gotten more than their fair share of the attention. its more than high time to give their computers a halfway decent refresh, which wont grab that much attention away from the ipad/ipod/iphone, and give us a market-comparable refresh. their current offerings are embarrassing no matter how you present it.

Considering that there's pretty much no doubt that a new version of the iPhone comes out in June/July, I'd hold out if I were you.

Being able to take a chunk of flash memory for use as a paging/swap file would be a nice addition, though it would mean user rage at less free space on their devices. If it could be made optional, somehow.

Didnt steve say in an interview google are trying to go all out to destroy the iphone?

I think this is the big year we see a huge leap in the iPhone, this will make cut copy paste the joke of an update it was.

The Phone will also be upgraded considerably I think instead of just being turbo'd like the 3GS was.

A4 Cpu's optimised for iPhone, giving superior performance while giving perhaps better battery life.

Top Notch Camera both rear and Forward facing (Thats why the new iphone is bigger)

960x640 screen or atleast 640x480 (personally I have no problem with the 480x320)

Upto 128GB Storage

Touch Capable off Screen (either side of button ala palm pre) possibly either side of Speaker too. This will give plenty of usability improvements)

To answer your question: no, do NOT buy a 3GS right now. New one will be out in 3 months.

I agree we need some sort of way to categorize our apps, but isn't it time we moved past the paper/desktop/folder analogy in computing? What makes sense with the analogy of putting apps (not made of paper) into folders (something used for organizing paper)? I get that it's something we've always done with GUIs, but it seems time to move on.

I think Apple will probably continue to steer clear of the folders thing with their mobile OS. Though yes please with categorization.

Not bad.

I looked at the purchase date of my AAPL stock. In 1 month the price has gone up $30 a share. I would expect it to drop tomorrow (after going up $2.50 today). Maybe not but I wouldn't be surprised if people sell to make a profit.

But over the next few months we will see new iphone improvements it seems, not to mention ipad 3G and sales of ipad outside the US. I wouldn't be surprised to see another gain of $20 per share by the end of summer. Then we have back to school sales and Yule gifts. $300 per share by the end of the year seems reasonable to me.

I think the google/apple animosity is really for show.

Supporters will rally behind both sides. When the two make up, both will benefit. And MS isn't part of it.

I agree (mostly). I'd prefer improvements to the spatial organization. Instead of a long strip, a large surface. Perhaps clusters on the surface take the place of folders. "zoom out" to see your full space with clusters, then zoom into a cluster to see the apps relating to that cluster. Or something.

Thanks for the promotion :)
Eh, I didn't even notice it. Bah I guess I could edit but I am way lazy :p

While flash is slower than dram, it could work in a pinch. Maybe allocate just enough space to wake the app up in ram and put the rest in flash.

3.0 came out for the older phones before the 3GS came out. I would expect the same to happen again.
Flash is still much much slower than DRAM.
True, but it is better than nothing considering how little ram we do have to play with. Another user had mentioned dashboard like widgets with 10MB of ram each. The problem with that approach (at least on my 3GS) is I only have 70MB free. that would be 7 background apps before I have no more ram for any foreground apps. Maybe 10MB is too much, but the problem still remains. Modern OS put inactive applications in VM (or at least the bulk of the app).

I think I'd nearly prefer not to know what's coming in 4.0 if we have to wait three months to get it. Makes the wait harder in my opinion

Is it possible Apple rushed this to kill the hype surrounding the HTC EVO?

Nope,

Apple have no need to worry about the hype machine. I'm pretty sure 4.0 has been in the pipeline longer than the imminent release of the evo...
