Is there gonna be a spoiler free page? I wanna hear it from Steve...or whoever.

The biggest thing I want is a new way to organize the homescreen. My homescreen browsing experience is looking a little cluttered these days...

cosign.

I hate having to scroll over numerous pages to open up an app.

However I will say that the search has made it easier. Just type the app you want to open. Also the ability to organize the app pages from within itunes was a great feature as well.

I always thought a "list view" would make sense to some. just scroll down a list of apps like you would contacts. maybe create groups(games, utilities, apple apps, etc) within the list view for better organization.

2010 the year of :apple:
, no 2007 was. list of things:

2007:
iPhone, Apple TV, iLife '08, iWork '08, Apple Computer Inc. > Apple Inc., Metal iMac, Leopard, iPod Touch, NEW iPod nano, NEW iPod Classic, UPDATED Macbooks.

2010:
Macbook refresh????, iPad, iPhone Refresh???? and... iPhone OS 4.0???? and iPod updates???????

2007 wins so far

one thing i really want amongst a few other things is either customizable message tones and/or a heap more message tones. Its really annoying when there is a few people with iPhone and everyone has the same message tone

I disagree with part of your statement. I believe that the iPad OS was almost "pushed" out and that the real potential for this device lies within iPhone OS 4.0. If you take a look at the iPad without the 5 major apps (iTunes, Photos, Calendar, Mail, Safari) the OS itself or the UI is literally the same as an iPhone. In fact I actually believe that the date for OS 4.0 was strategic with the iPad launch. I think it wasn't ready to show at the Jan event and they really want to show the world "This is what we really had in mind"

I also highly believe there will be multi-tasking as you stated. Some approval process, so things like 3D games wont run in the background, but mail and messaging apps will.

I really do believe that what we will see in OS 4.0 will address many of the concerns that make the iPhone slightly behind Android in certain respects. It will be interesting to say the least, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Agreed. I didn't read 23 pages worth of posts, so I'm sure this has been expressed by more than just the above quote, but I'll say it anyway.I believe that this will definitely be a MAJOR update BECAUSE of the the release of the iPad. And it makes sense to me to rename the software. It seems silly to call the operating system for the iPod Touch and the iPad the "iPhone OS". I don't like Mobile OSX, but I'm sure they'll think of something that will be fitting.

i thought we have copy and paste function already in OS 3.0 onwards?

Ignorant SOB's... we know the game by now, stop being the court jester and open up your mind to Thursday's reality

1. Limited multi-tasking

2. An updated UI to match the iPad (less blue, more silver)

3. iBooks for the iPhone (it helps drive revenue, so this goes without saying)

4. New API's blah blah blah...

The following are a streeeettttcccchhhh.....

1. A 21'st Century notification system (no more f$@%ing pop up's)

2. A lockscreen that isn't laughably bare

If Vegas is playing the odds, I'd double down on an updated UI, but hell...I'm just Captain Obvious

Look at the image. It's gonna be in 3D! Either that or a new feature called "shadow mode", or the UI is gonna be blue monochrome. Or they're taking a page from syfy and renaming to "Apyl"

I'm just hoping for better notification and maybe a quick reply to SMS function, so I can reply to an SMS without leaving the app I am in.

I don't think multi tasking will be involved.

I keep thinking back to the reported comments that Steve Jobs made during his town hall discussion with Apple employees. I believe he said it would be an A+ upgrade. I don't see how some UI improvements wouldn't be a part of that.

That comment was so generic. I mean what was he going to say? "We've got a B+ upgrade coming"? or "No updates ever. Not that big of a deal. Next question."

Seriously, he mentioned no specific features and from someone so quick with rhetoric and hyperbole, the comment is basically meaningless. I don't mean to be rude. I just don't think anything can be taken from it.

Recently abandoned my 3G after getting a 3GS and it having a crappy screen. Switched to verizon and got a droid... the iPhone is a joke.

There's no doubt in my mind whatever comes in 4.0 will be pretty, but it won't match other options in terms of features, customizability, power and ability.

'Expose' for iPhone is cool, but I can't see anything Apple comes up with software wise making me want to switch back to dreaded AT&T.

Hardware-wise, if they can come up with a better screen than 854x480 and put an Apple A4 in it, probably still no but much more compelling. The things I've done and seen done with Android just show how behind the iPhone is in both hardware and software

When you have nearly 2.5 month gap between the iPad and the iPhone 4.0 OS announcements, a lot can be done in that time

I disagree. 2.5 months is not a long time for Apple. Typical major software releases are on much larger time scales (12+ months).

It's not like the iPhone which has been out for nearly 3 years now and everyone has a common understanding of what's missing and what's not. Like anything else, it takes time for thoughts to trickle down.

Possibly. But with all the hype, many people will look at the device as it is now, and evaluate it. Unlike tech people, if it doesn't measure up to what they want, they will move on and get on with their lives and forget about it. They probably won't revisit that decision for a long time. First impressions count. But I do agree with others, and I said it myself here when the iPad was first launched, that Apple is in no hurry to add features and that iPad will evolve over many years.

I can tell you one thing, I'm willing to bet that a lot of people wont be complaining come Thursday when it comes to multi-tasking.

Why are you willing to bet multitasking will be coming in OS 4.0? (As opposed to say 5.0 or later?)

Think about if Apple waited till June to announce the iPad with iPhone 4.0 ready. That would be nearly 6 months lost for developers to make applications which believe it or not, really sets it back.

Agreed. But then we better hope that the multitasking is seamless and doesn't require any app modification. I think that's unlikely.

I really believe the iPad was demoed in Jan to show the world what it's CAPABLE of, and allow developers to get cracking. I believe that iPhone 4.0 is more inline of what Apple has wanted for the iPad all along.

This is a contradiction and goes to the heart of my point. If Apple was really interested in showing the world what the iPad was CAPABLE of, they would have shown a sneak preview of the future THEN. Not waited until the cameras have turned off and the media have turned to other topics. It's too late now. Yes, I know that in the long product arc of the iPad this is a minor point, but I'm just saying that this initial iPad announcement and shipping was about
a) maximising revenue
b) getting iPad developers started

and not showcasing the iPad in its full potential. If they had, no-one would buy because the features are not ready yet.

As much as I love my iPad and how beautiful and fast it is, I really believe this is more of a "beta" of the iPad and we're gonna see some really great features (including multi-tasking) come along with iPhone 4.0 OS.

I agree with this except for "4.0". My bet is on 5.0, 6.0, 7.0.. etc for the major features that are being requested right now (eg. multitasking).

Why was 4.0 held back till now? I think it comes down to the simple fact that Apple is a marketing genius. They never let us have it all at the same time, they like to draw out announcements and releases to keep the press coverage and the interest level spiked for longer periods of time. Also I think it has to do with the fact that normal people might be more interested in the iPad if they hear that there is already a major update coming. This shows the customer that the iPad is being actively developed and possibly updated more frequently then the competition, new stuff after the initial purchase of a product is always fun and keeps people interested.

Just a guess... As for what the update will actually contain we will just have to wait and see, I think it is going to be the most interesting update thus far. I have a feeling that we are going to see iLife for the iPad and all apps will save their place if you tap the home button, a longer press will quit the app entirely. I also think that Apple is going to introduce a quick reply feature for texting and will also release an API for devs to make use of for instant messaging clients. It will work in such a way that it will not take over what your doing and force you to either reply or dismiss. Those are my guesses.

keep hoping

i've been following tech for almost 20 years and have never seen a newer version of any software ship with the same or lower system requirements as the previous version

He wasn't talking about system requirements, he was talking about Apple doing to iPhone OS what they done to OS X when they released Snow Leopard.

Basically strip away all the excess that's not needed and has been accumulated through the previous three iterations of the OS. There's a hell of a lot of "baggage" in the iPhone OS that could possibly be taken away to streamline the OS for all iPhone SKU's.

Sounds to me that all I am going to get is more battery draining nonsense with this update.

If people want to use features that drain their battery quicker, then let them ... it's their phones.

You don't need to use the features, they'll have options to switch them off. But just because you don't want your battery drained quicker, doesn't mean Apple shouldn't include better features for users who are happy to suck life out their battery quicker.
