Forgive this stupid question

But isn't the hard drive solid state memory like RAM? Why couldn't Apple just relegate like 512MB of RAM from the hard drive and expand the RAM that way? In the update couldn't Apple just lock out that much memory and use is solely for RAM purposes?

I'm not a computer expert, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

I just hope it has the features my other $20 phone has.

They are :

1. SMS delivery reports. Important for people who are in business or for that matter anybody.

2. Ability to forward a SMS.

3. Abilit to delete a single SMS and not the whole conversation thread.

It will be really shameful if even now in the 4th installment they do not have these basic features.

2.) While not quite the same, you can easily copy an entire text by holding down on it, then paste into a message for multiple recipients.

3.) You already can do that now.

3. Press edit in the top right hand corner and select message you want to delete.

4. Stop bitching about features your too dumb to find.

2. You can do this

You can do all of the above except for #1 with the current OS.

The "hard drive" is flash RAM, which is much slower than DRAM. It also has a limited life cycle - you can only write into it so many times before it dies.

1. Totally agree, cant understand why this isn't included.

2. Forwarding an SMS is already possible.

3. Deleting a single sms is already possible also.

Just click edit when in a SMS conversation.

Two things....

1. The Ipad (or any Iphone OS system) won't use the "hard drive" for virtual memory. It could - there are hacks - but it doesn't. Lookup "walled garden" on Bing for insight.

2. Even if the Ipad (or any Iphone OS system) allowed using the "hard drive" for virtual memory, it would make apps that needed memory orders of magnitude slower than those that ran in-memory. Not good PR.

The flash "hard drive" on the Ipad is very slow compared to other SSDs - it's more like a USB thumb drive than a high performance SATA SSD. The idea that "SSD is always fast" is nonsense - many flash devices are very slow. They'll often do better than a spinning drive if it requires head movement, but if the HD is streaming or on track it can trounce low end flash.

I'm super excited! I love that it's in 3 days and not 3 weeks of agony. What a rare treat :D
The three weeks of agony is the wait for my 3G iPad to arrive! A pox on Apple for not having them on day one!

But if they have 4.0 and a camera on them all is forgiven! :)

By the way don't worry too much about the RAM, it is on-chip, very high speed, and runs over a 64 bit buss.

Even though I am an iPhone 3G owner, I feel the iPhone 3G's lack of performance will prevent it from getting any sort of performance heavy features (possibly including multitasking). 3GS might be the minimum.

Don't think that will be true considering I use the 3G phone, backgrounder, and pro switch with no problems. streamed WJR while doing other things with zero problems never lost good ol rush or mr hannity ;)

Hoping for a leaner OS. A Snow Leo redo of the entire OS is a must at this point. To many bugs from 1.x, 2.x and the 3.x series OS. Please Apple, make this a clean-up revision!

They are still cleaning up Snow Leopard...;)

I feel like the current OS is a cow. I want 4.0 to be less sluggish. And multitasking, please! It's so annoying to have to reload apps each time you switch to something else...

I'm just really glad we will hear more about the OS and see what this revision will bring. I wonder how many new features the original and 3G iPhones will not support.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Wonder how many people will pirate the beta firmware and maybe brick there phones like 3.0?

Nevermind.

Can't wait til Thursday. They better drop some Android-like notification system.

People should stop using the term "brick". It just doesn't happen anymore.

People who tried using the beta firmware without a developer's account or having their phone added to one (if they were stupid and didn't listen to the warnings plastered all over the webz), they simply restored back to 2.2.1.

I really feel like Apple is definitely feeling the heat and pressure from Android and other smart phone sales. It's kind of like they are saying oh crap, we can only keep everything secret for so long. Because while they are keeping things a secret, people are buying more android phones. I think this is definitely them feeling the pressure and reacting with ways to keep market share. + 1 for market competition. :)
