Wow! At the current pace of posts, this thread will single-handedly surpass the one about the 256MB well before the Apple event!

People may be voting it negative because they can't afford an iPhone os powered device and are upset.... You never know! :p

When I vote it does not seem to register. Do you have to a certain number of posts to rate stories?

I think the original intent of the Pos/Neg voting was not to say whether you liked the news or not, but rather to vote whether you thought a given rumor were true.

Now that the site has evolved into a hybrid news/rumor site the voting seems to have come to mean something else.

Ah kidz these days!

What I want: multitasking, more lockscreen info, one-touch switching between email accounts (what we'll actually get is unified inbox, but my idea is way better :p), different signatures for different email accounts (really easy but very important for people who use their iPhone for both work and personal email).

App categories would be cool but I'm happy with the basic os as it is. I don't think we need, or will get, a major overhaul.

There are many examples, here's one:
It going to be a performance hit, i just don't see apple trade app responsiveness for multitasking. I think they will rather limit the number of apps than use swap to launch more.

Am I the only one who has remembered that the OS already allows multitasking? Just not for 3rd party apps. Theoretically, any performance hit is already there, every day.

What we want is for them to open it up to more apps, not to radically change it into a full-blown desktop OS system. And since SJ has been teetering on the edge of psychotic over the performance of all his touchscreen devices, it seems likely a final solution will not significantly alter the overall speed of the device.

Seems more likely there would be different builds for the faster iPad than the slower devices, if anything. Or just....no 3rd party multitasking.

I'm starting to believe that some people vote negative regardless the content, or that are just pessimist on every rumor that comes up.
There is a certain percentage of people here who are indeed negative about everything they talk about here. My guess is that they are people with deep-seated issues of self-confidence.

Also, I believe there are a handful of people here who are simply bitter that they didn't buy AAPL at $45/share five years ago.

Some tech questions

1. How much memory (if any) might multitasking require?

2. Would the current hardware on the iPhone 3GS allow for multitasking?

3. Examining how the application store is organized, would it be a stretch to utilize an organization structure based on types of applications? (for example, I organize my pages based on productivity apps, games, settings and apps for purchasing, etc.). Perhaps utilizing a version of stacks to organize apps would make more sense.

4. What is the realistic probability that the 4.0 software would be released for the iPad? I honestly do not mind the setup as it is on my iPad, although the smallish app icons do seem rather out of place on the larger screen.

5. It is confirmed that Mail will get an overhaul to emulate the mail program in os x, what else is confirmed or rumored to be overhauled?

Oh yes MBP announce on Thursday

What better time to unleash the new MBP line? This is it people! This is it!

Well I'll be damned.

I've been around a few years and never knew that was the original meaning! Hmmm. That makes a lot of sense; a lot more sense than voting if you like it or not. Who cares if you like it?

Now that the site has evolved into a hybrid news/rumor site the voting seems to have come to mean something else.

Or, the votes mean nothing at all. ;)

For example, the story on Apple honoring the passing of Board member York. Did positive mean "replacing the home page was a nice gesture, Apple" or did it mean "happy that the fellow died"? The discussion of the votes in that thread was quite heated.

Is it possible Apple rushed this to kill the hype surrounding the HTC EVO?

Oh, is HTC releasing an android phone? Well stop the presses!!

but seriously, apple doesn't work like that. They work on their own time table and people respond to them.

Yeah, but the difference is right now Steve can at least pick up the phone and call -say- the safari.app team and tell them:"Put your **** together or you're getting your a** fired!"

With third party devs he can at most kick them out of the store but the damage is already done (app installed)

Welcome to the Web 2.0! Everyone is entitled to broadcast their opinion, and everyone has something important to say!

I just find it strange that they're going from 3.1.3 all the way to 4.0 so soon. 3.2 for iPhone/iPod touch would be more logical...And if the release of 4.0 is far and away then why let the cat out of the bag now? So all your competitors can beat you to the spot?

I'm going to guess they won't reveal everything and that this upgraded FW will only work on the 3GS and the all new iPhone meaning support of the 3G is possibly coming to an end, like the 1st gen iPhone before it. The 3GS will be bumped down to the 3G's level and the new hardware will be top dog.

What are you talking about?? The latest software still supports the original iPhone!

Are you new to apple or something? They revealed the last 2 OS updates in march, so this time it's happening later than usual. This isn't something they just randomly decided to do.

Is this the year of Steve Job's Shock and Awe lineup? I can't wait! New iPad-check, 4.0 software - upcoming, New Macbook Pros - upcoming, New iPhone - maybe? ahhh I can't think straight.

Don't Get Too Excited

It does not make sense that Apple is holding a media event now, just days after the iPad release. Why wouldn't this new software be released alongside the iPad? Is it possible that 4.0 was not finished in time? Regardless, the new firmware release will benefit both the iPhone and iPad. I expect mostly user interface upgrades and upgraded task management to deal with muti tasking and system performance. I just don't see anything too exciting coming in 4.0 bull all of the speakers on Thursday will make it seem like the best thing since sliced bread.

I want multitasking, it can even be gimped multitasking, just allow the ability to play streaming radio in the background. And Bluetooth keyboard support, hey the iPad has it, it seems reasonable that the iPhone should get it as well, but apple isn't always the most reasonable company. Some of the other iPad features would be nice in OS4 as well, like the dictionary support. but I won't be holding my breath for anything I don't want to get my hopes up and then be disappointed on thursday, I am sure/hope whatever they announce will be awesome.

1. How much memory (if any) might multitasking require?

2. Would the current hardware on the iPhone 3GS allow for multitasking?

I don't know the answer to these but my guess is that multitasking, at least the way apple plans to implement it will be more of a battery issue than a memory issue, I would be very surprised to see the 3GS not support multitasking, actually if multitasking is announced I am 85% sure the 3GS will support it. The point of the preview events is for developers to get a hold of the new API's so that they can implement the new features into their applications by the time OS4 is released, the most advanced phones available to test that on would be the 3GS, so I don't think apple will abandon their 3GS users. It seems unlikely that the original 3G will support it though, but I don't mind, I have been waiting for over a year to replace my iPhone, 16GBs of memory just doesn't do it like it use to.
